The Ravenspire and its Librarius.

I've had a look around the deep, dark internet.  I could find no mention of the Ravenguard and its view on Librarians.

Now, I know during the Heresy, after Nikea, the Librarius divisions were disbanded, and the individuals either rotated back into the legions, or something darker.

However, there are precedents for Primarchs, post-Istvaan V to take it upon themselves to repeal that decree, and Corax even took a former Librarian to Terra with him, to aid in gaining the Primarch material and data, so that leads me to believe that Corax was fairly indifferent about psychically gifted astartes.  Neither for them enough to speak up, nor against them enough to prohibit them.

During the aftermath of Istvaan V, and the remainder of the Heresy, do we know if Librarians were active within the Legion, or roughly when they would have become active again?

I'd like to justify one on my army, however, without knowing, it makes things a little tricky, and I'm trying to stay as close as I can.

Well, Corax stood with Russ in accusing Magnus of practicing sorcery. He was not as adamant as Russ or Mortarion, but he was wary of too much warp influence.

I too, am unclear about just when the Raven Guard reinstated its Librarius. Perhaps, it was on a flash point, like with the Dark Angels, or maybe it was because of Guilliman's Codex Astartes, and how it reorganized the legions into chapters. I do not think the issue was ever explored.

Seems that the Raven Guard Librarians followed the edict of Nikea until the drop site massacre.

Balsar Kurthuri was the Chief Librarian and proceeded to use his powers post Istavaan, returning to Terra in the Grey Raven short story to face judgement and subsequently being inducted into Malcador's Knights Errant.

Also in Vulkan lives, the Raven Guard Codicier Hriak, does use his powers during the flight of the Salamader Artellus Numeon's shattered legions survivors unit from the pursuing Word Bearers.

Being a codex chapter in the 40K timeline, I would expect them to be as with Vanilla marines, they just haven't been well documented in the fluff.

Cheers,

Valaas

Thanks for the input guys.

I'm going to keep the more modern armour marks out of my army as much as possible. The characters may have the odd suit of modern terminator armour, here or there.

There hasn't been much fluff about the Ravenguard librarius, and how things happen there. I'm kind of thinking that my librarians are going to go "full Legion" and not stand out, other than the model. I've got a 2nd edition aspect to my Imperial Fists, where all specialists are full armour specialist colour.

I might slowly build up a terminator armoured conclave for my RG, the fluff will be something along the lines of this:

During the golden days of the Great Crusade, the Ravenguard experimented with astartes who had a psychic ability. Pooling their learning with those of other Legions, the Ravenguard soon found ways to enhance their stealthy abilities.

As the Librarius division grew slowly, Corax kept a watchful eye, ensuring his Astartes didn't grow too dependent on their powers.

When the Emperor called the Primarchs to Nikea, Corax spoke neutrally about psykers in the Legions in general, however he condemned Magnus and his Thousand Sons for delving too deeply into sorcery, perhaps feeling that his brother's Legion were losing themselves as warriors.

After the events of Istvaan V, Corax and the Ravenguard spent time rebuilding the Legion, and carrying out strikes against the Traitor forces.

Corax kept to the will of the Emperor, until the first encounter with a force of Daemonica entities. An accident with one of the legionaries deployed led to the discovery where bolt and blade would not cause lasting damage, the psychically gifted could. The legionary did not survive, his powers consuming him in a pillar of pure white fire.

Corax withdrew back to orbit, gathered those astartes with psychic capabilities, and relieved them of their vows to eschew the powers of the warp.

Donning their psychic hoods, the librarians led the legion back to battle, cleansing the daemons from the planet.

Since then, the librarians of the Ravenguard have been few in number, with skills leaning towards stealth. Their views are they are warriors first, psychics last.

Not being into Heresy stuff I have enjoyed the conversation.  The fluff explanation reads great :tu:

Yet, I've always believed that to be true for all Astartes Librabrians: warrior first.  Is that incorrect?

Well, way I see it, the Thousand Sons were disciplined for warp usage over warrior skills.

Basically, I see that they lost perspective on what they were supposed to be doing.

Meanwhile, the Ravenguard, not hungry for power, and preferring the Warcraft over warpcraft, Corax would feel his librarians would be less likely to fall prey to the temptations of the warp.

Pretty mind ch bang on I think. There's a great bit in 'scars' which shows how the white scar librarians control warp exposure and specifically aim not to go 'too far'. One of the best heresy reads I reckon

Excuse the flash pic please.

"I shall bear no blade nor Bolter unto the anvil of war.

I shall shroud my brothers, confound my enemies, and look to the Emperor as a shield.

I guide my brothers so they are not confounded, I shall make them appear as if they were not there.

If any get too close, I'll hit them with my hitting stick!" - Chief Librarian Baxen Bleakwing M31.

Incidentally, Bleakwing managed to stave off the assaults of a pair of Terminator Squads last night... tanking LC saves on his war plate, and trusting the Enperor against hammers and fists. 3 turns he survived against 10 terminators.

I would ask you pay an extra 10-15 points for that. Otherwise, sure thing :tu:

Each?

Because that would be potentially 60 points for a pair of claws with Force. Be better to spend that on a Scout squad.

Ooh...

I've been thinking about "Force Claws", though it might be a singular handed weapon, using the rules for Force Swords.

That way, no need to fiddle with rules when playing outside my current area.

I see my first RG psyker as being the current Chief, and forming a conclave around him. They'll be the ones to bear blades.

The reason he doesn't, personal preference.

I meant per hand. But that's getting into DIY territory which is really up to your group, not us. Ultimately, if you want to do it, then go for it because it's just a game ^_^
