Tormentors WIP Log (small Guard detour)

Recommended Posts

@deathspectersgt7: thanks a lot!

I finally finished revamping this guy:

http://i.imgur.com/MLvayT8.png

This is the old metal Dark Angels Dreadnought from second edition. I think I bought him in '96 or '97, originally gave him a terrible Ultramarines paintjob, then painted over that in the black scheme in '97 or '98. The chapter was unnamed, until in '99 or '00 I decided that they would be the Tormentors, but that they should be gray instead of black... but I was too lazy to actually paint him in the correct colors by that point.

After stripping the paint, I added the cross and shield to the front, and a big purity seal onto the missile launcher.

More in the spoiler, as well as the "state of the army":

I couldn't decide on the color for the focusing rings on the lascannon. I originally thought I'd try the OSL scheme, but it didn't make sense to have a huge power glow for a big laser. I didn't want to make them just silver, because then they would just disappear. Instead, I decided to make them gold, with gold barrels. I figured using some "premium" components will fit in with the fact that, as IF successors, Devastators and Cents have Tank/Monster hunters, so the materials are also on the Dread - why not?

Here he is next to my venerable dread. I really like the Mk IV dreads, but they kind of make the Mk V's look a little boring (this is a 2E metal dread though, so it's no surprise that it's very static - even though that makes sense for a heavy weapon, long-range support platform).

Overhead markings so that friendly aircraft won't accidentally shoot them:

I went a little overboard with the grime/oil on the guy using washes, but I think it looks good regardless.

And finally, here is my painted army thus far, at 745 points:

http://i.imgur.com/1JvO7w3.jpg

These were all painted as part of this months' painting challenge in the Imperial Fists section - without those guys I wouldn't have had the motivation to actually paint anything, so a big thanks goes out to that community, and to everyone else that has helped and commented!

Aside from painting, I've been pretty vigorously putting together models, buying ebay bits for conversions, and getting everything ready to prime. I'm somewhere in the ~4200 pt range on total models, not including some secrets that the Tormentors have locked away in the Forge's vaults....

Here is everything I have right now:

For a 1500 pt Skyhammer force:

http://i.imgur.com/Fl2A903.jpg

  • Chaplain
  • 3x 5-man Tac squads
  • 5-man Dev squad (lascannons)
  • Land speeder
  • Razorback w/ lascannons
  • 2x 10-man Dev squads (4x multi meltas, 2x grav cannons, 2x missile launchers)
  • 5-man assault squad (2 flamers)
  • 7-man assault squad (1 hammer, 1 eviscerator, 1 plasma, 4 normals)

Need:

  • 2x Rhinos
  • 2x Drop Pods

All the rest:

http://i.imgur.com/ANXN8eI.jpg

  • 3 dreads (1 ironclad, 1 venerable w/ dual flamers, 1 standard with LC/ML)
  • 1 Chapter Master (jump pack)
  • 1 Captain
  • 1 Chaplain w/ jump pack
  • 1 Counts-as Lysander
  • 1x 10-man tac squad (multi-melta, melta, combi-melta)
  • 1x command squad (banner w/ fist, champion w/ power axe, 2x plasma, 1x melta - yes I know this is a mess)
  • 5x tac terminators
  • 5x combi-melta sternguard
  • 6x vanguard vets (packs, 1x relic/SS, 1x axe/SS, 1x LC/SS, 1x 2LC, 1x LC/PF, 1x gunslinger w/ bolt/grav)
  • 7x honor guard (champ w/ hammer/chainsword, 2x relic blades, 1x axe, 2x mauls, 1x sword)
  • Vindicare assassin
  • Culexus assassin
  • Vindicator
  • Land Raider
  • Predator (really dumb - LC turret w/ HB sponsons - when I get another pred kit I will make a proper tri-las and an AC/HB pred)

At this point, I think I'm finished painting until the ETL kicks off. I'm going back to work on Monday (I had back surgery this month so have been home the whole time - I left me house for the first time yesterday!)

In the meantime, I can continue working on building up what I have and getting ready for the ETL. The spoiler lists what I have now, but I figure that nobody really wants to see a bunch of unprimed stuff that doesn't involve the amazing greenstuff work in the other WIP threads - so if there's something specific you want to see, please let me know!

So I've been working on the interiors of three different tanks and I keep losing focus, dropping one and working on the other.  I decided that I'm going to 100% finish building my Razorback before doing the Vindi or Predator.

Here is what I've got so far:

http://i.imgur.com/Pr0iaYQ.jpg

A couple of design notes:

* There are a couple of different ways that you could do the turret. For example, the forgeworld turrets seem to have most of the ammo/batters up on top of the vehicle, while the regular GW have all that stuff inside.  I like it being inside, because then it makes sense why the interior is cramped enough to take the space of four Marines.

* I want to have one "demonstrator" version of each tank I have - meaning a fully detailed interior, working doors, etc.  The idea is that this one could be set up so you can see how everything is inside, and then any additional vehicles of the same time would just have basic interiors that look good from the accessible viewpoints, but I can glue the tops on and stuff so that they'll be durable in the games that I never seem to play.

* The Razorback will go a step further here, because I want to build out the powertrain based on some old diagrams I made a while ago in another thread:

http://i.imgur.com/bRKA3Ld.png

This original diagram was based off of Forgeworld's schematics, but it's obviously going to be different once you put it together in 'real life.'  So... I'm going to build it up as best I can, and then re-work the schematic based on what I end up with.  I'm already seeing space issues with engines and all the junk that goes around it, as well as space for the track guides, etc, but it should still be good.

See the spoiler for more photos, and the progress on the engines so far (yes, it looks pretty barren):

Also, I bought a small Guard platoon to serve as my Chapter's auxiliary forces.  Here is a quick camo test scheme - what do you think?  Please throw out any ideas you have for the armor/pouches - right now i'm thinking gray, with black weapons, but I'm open to ideas - I want the armor to be a single flat color that's useful in multiple camo schemes.  The idea is that the guardsman take their armor and kit everywhere they go, but change their fatigues based on the environment they deploy to.

Thanks!

I was unconvinced when first looking at the bare-bones conversions, but then you showed off the Vindicator internals, and some models with a lick of paint, and well, now??

Colour me impressed :tu:   This is going to be a really cool project log to follow.

Cheers,

Jono

Thanks for the comments, everyone!

I stopped into GW for some liquid green stuff and fell lure to the Primaris.  I wasn't a HUGE fan of them in photos, but seeing them in person, I couldn't resist picking up a captain and some of the easy to build guys to mess around with.

For the captain, I figure he will be a shooty Captain, so I wanted to model him as a more stoic, "survey the battlefield" type of guy than a "follow me" charger.  So I added a couple of bits and bobs here and there - let me know what you think!

It's been a while, and the ETL has got me now trying to figure out between pledging for the Imperial Fists (the Tormentors are a successor), or IFOR, since I've been building an IG support force and have Forgebane now.  Decisions....

Regardless, it's late and I don't have much time, but I thought I'd throw this teaser up:

My Leman Russes have a crew of 7:

Commander

Gunner

Loader

Driver

Radio Operator (slash Hull Gunner)

Sponson Gunner

Sponson Gunner

Right now , it looks like it'll be a tight squeeze but I ought to be able to fit all seven in there with a "decent" ammunition store, but that part remains to be seen!

Impressive work on the Leman Russ interiors. Are the turret and the hull roof removable, so others can see the work you did?

Yes sir!  Below is the progress post I made in the Astra Militarum outpost thread:

Work still trudges along... waiting for the glosscoat to dry so I can weather and detail my Russ, so figured I'd post some photos of where it's at now:

2M5GOkb.jpg

Camo scheme will be much darker after washes and weathering, this is just the base coat blocked in.

Hmm, interesting...

I should note that the engine bay was not originally in scope for this model - my plan was to glue the top and bottom hull sections together and block that area off from view, but the top needs to be removable to see everything else.  So now the empty engine bay (and obvious magnet point) are exposed, which will drive me nuts.  So, later, I will build an engine/transmission/fuel module to drop in there, but that will be after ETL, because I need to get a move on if I want to actually contribute..

Check the spoiler for everything, don't want to clog this up!

Beautiful work on the interior, but those shells should be stored in fireproof containers (look for pictures of M4 Sherman tanks with "wet" stowage). Otherwise, the tank will earn the nickname "Explode-o-matic", once enemy attacks ignite the stored ammo (look for pictures of M4 tanks WITHOUT "wet" stowage).

I also noticed how cramped the turret is- there may be room for a tank commander and a loader (I see no autoloader), but NOT for a gunner. Is the latter stationed in the hull, operating the turret-mounted weapons via remote (see remote weapon stations)?

Thanks Bjorn!

For the shells, I had essentially decided that by then they will have developed some electronically-primed or fire resostamt ammo, so that the crew wont all ‘splode on the first hit. I’m putting a lot of faith into the Imperium’s chemical engineering prowess there :)

The gunner has a seat in the turret, but ai realized its not obvious from the pictures. The gunner’s seat is next to the grated turret wall, and his station is in a photo that I forgot to upload - whoops! I’ll correct that when I get home. All 7 crew have seats and space, but I only have one crewman i used to test all the seats so its not well represented at the moment :)
