The Void Revenants - Snake?! SNAAAAAKE!?

Hey all,

Been lurking for a bit and finally have decided to throw my hat into the Heresy ring with the start of a small true-scale Blackshield force. Am still working on the overall fluff  (Terran veterans from both the Fourth and Eighth Legions who have decided to reject their Primarch's choice of allegiance) and the actual warband name but have some ideas bubbling away which will be posted later!

First up is my initial test model for the colour scheme, who was going to be the Reaver Lord until I ended up building a more fitting model.

Veteran Isskur Krone, Once member of the Fourth Legion, Wolf-Slayer, Thrice Cursed and Herald of Old Night.

My as yet unnamed Blackshield Reaver Lord who is still slightly WIP:

Finally the Leviathan Dreadnought (also WIP):

Am hoping to slowly expand to a small warbands worth, though with my painting speed may take a while! Anyways thanks for reading and comments/criticisms/questions are always welcome :biggrin.:.

Fantastic work, both conversion-wise and paint-wise. The freehand is particularly great, I'm in love with all the symbols you've got going on.

Just out of curiosity, how did you go about making the torso for the first veteran there?

Vairocanum: Cheers man! Glad you like the Blackshields so far!

Galloway: Thank you!

Doghouse: I am honoured you like them! :D !

Drakzilla: Thanks, I am really pleased how the first model turned out, especially the freehand symbols (Helps add a unique flavour to Blackshields). If I remember correctly I made the torso using an MK3 Iron Armour one from the BoP box, then added an layer of greenstuff on the upper torso, and two bands just below, going all the way round the torso. I don't have an original colour image of the model before paint but I shall endeavour to provide one below to illustrate my point:

Its not 100% clear but hope this helps!

The Traitor: Cheers! Am glad you like them, I was definitely going for the grimdark look overall!

Painting of the Reaver Lord has been slow but he is now finally complete, and with him a little bit more background about his Blackshield group:

Reaver Lord Asag* of the Void Scholars Blackshield group, Once known as Valerius "The Just" Strom of the VIIIth legion.

Self proclaimed herald of the Cyclops Engine, Ascendant Twin Mind and Veteran of The Hell Stars Xenocide.

"When the Cyclops broke the first seal, I heard the voice of the Ancients saying, “Come.” And I saw, and behold a great warrior: his frame clad in mighty black plate; and in his brow sat a silvered mind of machine thought: and he went forth to sunder those who turned against brother."
-Book of Revelations Machina, M29.041, Repressed work.

“You are naught but beasts, undeserving of either revelation or ascendance. I/We are Asag, and we bring your death.”
-Valerius Strom/Asag, Commander of the Blackshield group known as the “Void Scholars. Addressing the Word Bearers Garrison stationed on Assur.

Pict Capture inload 001: Valerius/Asag  bears the sickly purple skin tone commonly seen amongst veterans of the Hell Stars Xenocide, thought to be due to non lethal exposure to the terrible energy weapons of [REDACTED]. Note the non-standard cybernetic implants, the archives failing to match them to any known Imperial or Martian standard.

Pict Capture inload 002: Legion Heraldry has been wilfully obscured and replaced with the symbol associated with the Void Scholars. [significance of the Heraldry however remains unknown: possible conjectures include a derivation of the ancient symbol ouroboros]. He is seen here wielding and archaeotech pistol believed to be of the MASER type [see Mechanicus inload WT3.42_BOILING_BLOOD, to see the destructive capabilities of such ancient weapons].

Pict Capture inload 003: Tilt shield bears unknown numerals, potentially a reference to his parent legion the VIIIth? Lightning bolts on chest armour indicates that he was a Terran veteran of the Unification Wars. Pict capture highlights possible Iron Halo?

Pict Capture inload 004: Left shoulder pad can be seen to bear the Hell Stars Xenocide badge. In his left hand Valerius is wielding some form of  esoteric power glaive, a weapon that he did not possess pre-Heresy.

Pict Capture inload 005: Standard MkIII power pack, like rest of the armour kept in relatively good condition despite severance from Legion supply chains.

DATA INLOAD ENDS HERE: DO YOU WISH TO ACCESS STACK FILE 04.22 [VOID SCHOLARS]? [Y]/[N]
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
*Note: Deep stack queries by numerous Imperial Sages suggest that  the name Asag is derived from an ancient Pre-Imperial Terran civilisation of Mespatamia, being the name given to a demon whose mere presence could "Boil the fish in their oceans".

Am really pleased with how he turned out, and I finally came up with a name for his warband :D! Comments or criticisms on the name/model/fluff are always appreciated. More will be revealed regarding the Void Scholars and their origins soon...

The_son_of_Dorn: The Void Scholars are mostly made up of Terran Veterans from the Fourth and Eighth Legions. A few members come from elsewhere, but the vast majority of its members come from those two legions!

@Vairocanum: Cheers man!

@The Traitor: Thank you! I do have to agree the shoulder icon does look quite XVth legion but I like the esoteric nature of it!

@hushrong: Thank you! The idea of Blackshields has really grabbed me in regards to 30k

Now I have a slight conundrum: I know at the beginning of this I stated the blackshield force would be true-scale, however after receiving an order of Legion Destroyers and other assorted bitz from forgeworld, I realise I am loathe to cut the legs to lengthen them (due to torso and legs being one piece) or to cut off the torso and attach terminator legs, as am worried I would screw up. I am quite tempted to leave the characters of the force true scale (and come up with some lore justification) and the rest of the marines unmodified, but also feel like this compromises my original vision for the force...

Any thoughts/ideas on the matter would be greatly appreciated, including any tips on true scaling resin models!

Right so have decided to stick to heroic scale for now as I really don't want to damage my nice new Legion Destroyers.

So here are the first five members (unpainted) of one of the Void Scholar's Blackshield Marauder squads (all armed with shotguns and chainaxes):

I love the endless possibilities of the blackshields.

New guys are looking good. Are you using the AoS plastic bases on them? As for true-scaling there are plenty of ways to do it I have seen on here. My favorite being to cut the shins and/or thighs and adding in some plasticard. I just don't know how they would look to your marines.

I want to do this then it would take me months, not weeks, to finish building a mini.

They look awesome, I agree with your decision of leaving them in heroic scale, true scaling a whole army looks like a huge pain... also, could we get a rear look of your marines to see how the axes look attached to the backpack? I'm pretty curious about that for my own Blackshields :P!

  • 5 weeks later...

@Vairocanum: Cheers, may be a while before they get painted have been distracted painting my leviathan and starting on some Destroyers.

@Hushrong: Thank you! Yeah those are AoS bases, thought they would do nicely to represent an ancient tomb world/strange Halo Star ruins. Think the majority of my army will be heroic scale but some true scale thrown in to represent some of the ascended...

@The Traitor: Thanks! Yeah it really would, but as mentioned above some of the elites of the army will be true scaled to represent ascended members of the void scholars.

Hope the above picture helps!

After quite a while my Leviathan Dreadnought is finally painted.

Lukas Aurenth, Void-Walker, The Broken and Former Praetor of the IVth Legion.

"The Void, it crawls" - Last vox transmission of Lukas Aurenth after his entry into the extradimensional gateway above Irem during the climatic battle of the Hell Stars Crusade.

"Here we shall break our bonds, spitting on the names of our Legions and Gene sires. Vengeance will be ours, even if we must fight until the stars go cold, our blades blunted and bolters spent" - Lukas Aurenth,  now interred in a Leviathan Dreadnought chassis, addressing the Expeditionary force upon hearing of the events of Istavaan V.

One thing I learned from painting this wonderful mini is that sub assemblies are your friend. I unfortunately had glued him all together by the time it came to paint but I won't be making that mistake again!

Comments and criticisms are welcome :)

@foamy248: Am really glad you like the leviathan! The fee hand had to be my favourite bit, and contains some cryptic references to the background of the void scholars ;)

@hushrong: Cheers man haha! Yeah am in two minds about sub assembly, especially regarding smaller models!

@theTraitor: Thank you! Oooh cheers for the tip.

@Vairocanum: Thank you! Hopefully the destroyers turn out just as nice.

and now for a little WIP

Uridimmu, first of the Ascended, formerly Brother Corvi Rex of the VIIIth legion.

"That was no Astartes, he..no..it was something much more, much worse.."

-Feliz Nex, Commander of the Fifteenth Praedian Fusiliers, giving his account of the Shattering of Assur

The backpack and head are blue-tacked on, I really do like how the cape looks (the thousand sons iconography will be filled in). Am struggling with what to do for the left arm so suggestions are welcome. Ended up building another true scale, since I have a plan for a whole squad of them. Basically if custodes ever get an ally list and they can ally with blackshields, will be running the Ascended as custodes (as I feel it fits the warbands theme more than big golden dudes).
