Liberalia Martiale 2017 - THE IRON GAUNTLET

Hail brothers and sisters of the Liber! Once again the Liberalia has come around and we have ourselves the honour of being the centre of attention. Regardless, I would like to ask both Liberites and other members of B&C to dust off any old DIYs they have and give them another shot. Now's the time to crank out the old creativity.

We are honoured to once again host Grand Master Belial's Brotherhood of Angels event, which shall be posted by the man himself both in the Liber and the Dark Angels subforums. Any and all Liberites are encouraged to have a go, to prove their mettle.

But, I say, there is more! This year we have something special.

The IRON GAUNTLET returns! After so many years gone, it comes back - with thanks to efforts made primarily by Dosjetka to bring it back - and a welcome sight it is. Now, of course, just entering is not enough! There is a an expectation that we will have members who will accomplish all five challenges. If the old Iron Gauntlet challenges are anything to go by, they will not be many! But, certainly, those who push themselves and achieve all that is asked of them, then they shall be rewarded with a specific and unique badge.

But do not be daunted. This is supposed to be fun... in a roundabout way. If you think you can only complete specific challenges, then only enter those ones. There is nothing here saying that you must complete them all or automatically fail. Do what you can. Just remember the idea is to push yourself.

Also, before I forget, I urge anyone entering the Iron Gauntlet to consider entering the Brotherhood of Angels, too. GMB works hard to host these events, so I'd be pleased to see some entries this year.
To register for this Challenge or any others make the following statement:

I, <your name>, of the <Chapter/Warband/Regiment name> take up your Challenges. I vow, before my brothers and sisters of the B&C to complete Challenge <challenge number> and submit it to the Liber before the deadline. I vow to support my fellow challengers to the best of my ability. May the Emperor/the Dark Gods/Brother Argos himself curse me if I fail. [Please leave a link to your article so I can update the first post, or PM me the link instead.]

I would just like to add that this event was originally the brainchild of Brother SP who created and run it all the way back in 2010-2011. At the time only one participant managed to complete all challenges (LySiMachus) so I think that is enough of a testimony as to how tough this one is. Good luck to all. ;)

*crickets chirp*

Still working out the ins and outs of my project but here is my vow anyway. That way I can get started as soon as I am ready.

I, Dosjetka, of the Hounds Rampant accept the challenges laid out in the Iron Gauntlet 2017. I vow to complete the first challenge, writing an in-depth article about my Chapter while also providing constructive criticism to my fellow Liberites, by Wednesday 17th May 2017. Victory shall see my Chapter's name echo through the ages. Failure shall see me bear the mark of censure until year's end. For the Chapter, the Emperor, the Imperium, and the Liber!

Question, does 'Liber Astartes' covers just regular SM book, or does it cover Death Watch too?

Second, if I picks Space Marines, does it need to be DIY chapter or can it be regular canon one? If it can be a canon one, does the article about their history needs to be something from canon sources or does it need to be freshly made up, original idea of the writer?

Can you specify the context surrounding your first question, Irbis? Are you intending on creating a Chapter with links to the Deathwatch or which will use the Codex: Deathwatch for Challenge #2?

Regarding your second question, this is the Liber Astartes so you are encouraged to create your own "scratch-built" Chapter. That is the whole idea behind the "do it yourself" concept that the Liber represents. However taking a Chapter that has a colour scheme and/or a little information and filling in the blanks is also an option.

I'll take it on.

I, Brother Cryptix, of the Grave Wardens take up your Challenges. I vow, before my brothers and sisters of the B&C to complete the First, Pentultimate, and Final Challenges and submit it to the Liber before the deadline. I vow to support my fellow challengers to the best of my ability. May the Emperor himself curse me if I fail.

I was just thinking Honda shouldn't be the only person I annoy with my DIY ;)

We of the November IX take up your Challenges. I vow, before my brothers and sisters of the B&C to complete the first and all of the many challenges and submit it to the Liber before the deadline. I vow to support my fellow challengers to the best of my ability. May the Emperor, the Fires of Time, and Brother Argos himself curse me if I fail. Tempus Bellum per Novem!

I was just considering if I could use Death Watch-like army (custom-built, not one of canon ones) either using DW units or counts-as sternguard, or does it have to be SM book rules/units only. Also, thank you for the second clarification, will consider it.

If you'd like the structure of your Chapter to be different from the norm, feel free to go down that path. And I don't think there'll be any restrictions for which of the various Adeptus Astartes Codecies you can use. :tu:

Nice Idea Olis, although I'll sit this one out as I'll be busy in Canada in BATUS this year.

Sorry to hear that Scion. Also, thank Dosjetka. He was the one who did most of the legwork for this particular event. :happy.:

Is Challenge 2 so that the Liber has a shoe in for ETL VI?

Maaaaybe. :whistling:

I, Captain Daron Lenoch of the Dawn Blades, in the name of the Solis-Imperator and mankind, swear an oath in full view of my brothers and sisters of the Bolter and Chainsword. I vow to complete the challenges of the Iron Guantlet and submit it to the Liber before the deadlines. Should I fail, may the Emperor, Vulkan, Ferrus Manus, and Brother Argos himself curse me for the remainder of the year. Ave Solis-Imperator!

I'm nervous about this, and this will take me to my limit of my New Years resolution, but we'll see. I feel this will help me grow as a hobbyist and writer.

Brother SP stood before the massive Gates of the Liber.  It had been many years since he had trod these halls.  Too many years, he thought grimly to himself.  Much had changed in that time, he mused to himself, flexing his newly replaces bionic right arm.  Much had changed both with himself and within these hallowed halls.  He squinted up towards the top of the mighty edifice.  He remembered when he had first walked through these doors those long long years ago, a young initiate full of hope and half baked ideas.  The long years had worn that from him.  With a final sigh he slipped on his skull faced helmet and pushed through the doors to once again walk the Liber.

He smiled grimly to himself behind the leering skull face of his helmet.  Things here looked the same as they had when he had left.  Great statues of the Liberati lined the entryway leading the newly arrived deeper into the maddening halls within.  SP recognised many of the ancient worn statues as Brothers he had once known.  To his left stood a statue of Commissar Molotov, a whip in one hand and a data slate in the other.  Further down the hall, side by side, stood the two giants Octavulg and Nightrawen.  In a great alcove he even noted a statue of SCC, one of the first great Liberati.  Further in stood newer statues; Ace Debonair, Olis and Lysimachus. So many familiar faces, SP mused, and yet he noted much less bustle of acolytes and marines around the hall.  Even more troubling to him was the fact that he didn't see any faces he recognised.  Turning his gaze back to his purpose here he shrugged and pushed on.  None of the Brothers moving around seemed to take note of the Chaplain in their midst as he worked his way deeper and deeper into the Liber.  He had one place in mind for his visit.  He had heard a call, a very familiar call, and he found it troubling.  He kept moving forwards, past the well lit halls and busy serfs and brothers and into the more dimly lit and less well kept corridors.  Here lights flickered fitfully and dust and rust lay thick on everything.  These were familiar halls to him.  These were the halls of the Deepest Darkest Depths of Liber.  Here was where neglected Chapters and their dataslates went to lie forgotten.  And it was here he had once called home.  He came to a very familiar door, bearing the letters SP.  With a grim sigh he pushed the heavy slab door open and walked in.  The rooms lights flickered to life dimly, shedding pale sickly glow across the long abandoned furniture.

Brother SP made his way past long forgotten data stacks.  He could pick out the occasional detail amongst the dust; a Lion head here, a Leopard rampant there.  There was even one bearing the sacred sign of the Deathwatch.  He let out a pained sigh, so many ideas, so many projects, left here to gather dust.  But that wasn't his purpose here, not today.  He kept moving till he came to a square case at the back of the room.  Thick dust covered the glass case but he could still make out the plaque on the front.  It read in bold gothic letters "The Iron Gauntlet".  It was an item of immense power.  The Gauntlet held great power of both construction and destruction.  It was this that SP had heard the call from, it was this that he had locked away all these years ago.  It was this that was... gone?

" What on Terra?" he breathed, pulling the dust covered case aside.  There was no sign of the relic at all.  Instead there was a hand written note where it had sat.

"Hey SP, if you are reading this sorry we borrowed the Gauntlet.  We will bring it back when we are finished, promise.  Olis and Dos"  Brother SP let the note fall from his hand.

"Emperor's Mercy..." he groaned, resting his head in his hand.  He shook his head for a second and then slowly looked around the room.  He let out a sigh and then started to walk from the room, a new grim purpose in his step.  First things first he had to find a serf.  Then a new office, somewhere outside of the DDDoL, perhaps with a view.  It had been too long since he had walked these halls.  Perhaps it was time to change that...

Indulge my perchance for nostalgia and my love of the dramatic there guys.  Figured since I was the creator the Iron Gauntlet its return should perhaps help herald my own.  Besides it would be pretty rough if I didn't step up to what I used to challenge others to do.  But as its me I have to go hard or go home so...

I, Brother SP, of the Iron Heralds + Chaos Warband + Imperial Guard Regiment + Sisters of Battle Order take up your Challenges. I vow, before my brothers and sisters of the B&C to complete Challenge the First x4 (also love to use of my old naming there guys) and submit it to the Liber before the deadline. I vow to support my fellow challengers to the best of my ability. May the Emperor/the Dark Gods/The Commissariat curse me if I should fail

Links to the four articles shall follow.  I must admit I am kinda cheating with the Iron Heralds as I already have an IA for them so they may be replaced before I start working as the original purpose of the Iron Gauntlet was always to come up with a totally new Chapter.  Also note I wont be completing all the challenges with all the factions (I dont have that much time/money on my hands...)  But I will have a red hot crack where I can.  Note that the Chaos Warband shall be my main focus here so I am hoping to get Gold for all the challenges with them.

I'm gratified to see veterans such as yourselves, Brother SP and Ferrus Manus, stepping up to take part in the new Iron Gauntlet. And I am especially thankful for you, Brother SP, for having done that first challenge years ago. Without that one, this one would not exist.

I'll post topic link either tonight or tomorrow evening depending on how ridiculous work is... And checking the other entries. I don't expect to get any medals but maybe this will help my own writing ability.

Slavery beckons me and lord knows the local Magos is not known to be entirely forgiving to tardiness. Hehe

Only question now is how do I jam (Iron Gauntlet) in the title.

So, I've been spending the past few days between writing my Guard Regiments and Chapter. While I love my meat-shield regiment I feel my Astarte's Chapter would be more at home in this challenge. I've edited my original post... If that's okay. For some reason I'm getting a tad more progress and inspiration for the Space Marines. Probably because all the Homebrew Chapters I'm reading.

So long as you don't make it a habit, then okay.
