contemptor mortis v deredeo

I love the look of contemptors, but find it hard to justify a mortis over a deredeo, with the exception of games where im running light on heavy support slots.

is a contemptor mortis with (example) kheres autocannons worth taking as a general fire support & casual skyfire battery, or should you always take a deredeo when there is a heavy slot available?

advice would be appreciated thanks guys!

I mean you said it yourself, you can't justify a mortis over a deredeo unless you're out of heavy support choices. Autocannon mortis is just straight up worse because it's lower strength and doesn't have sunder. Kheres autocannon at least is better verses infantry, but I'd usually still rather have the deredeo with the missiles which is good against several targets.

Now what you could do is include both, I sometimes do that in terror assault which with the lack of heavy support can be a bit lacking in firepower. Mortis is still a good choice if you can't bring a lot of heavy guns.

Deredeo is better but you pay for it in point and slot.

Having said that contemptor Mortis with dual kheres usually performs really well and in my area alot of people run 1-2 in lists of 3k+. My ones often make the points back and are a much lower target priority than my deredeo or alot of other units.

The thing with the kheres Mortis is it can threaten almost every unit if it can get into range which for the points I think is a pretty good deal.

I think they both have their purpose. It really depends on your list.

If your Heavy slots are already restricted (like in Terror Assault, where people normally just bring a Leviathan to capitalize on the Turn 1 alpha strike), Mortis with lascannons or kheres is fine as fire support. Dorito with arachnus is hellishly expensive, but it will hurt pretty much everything in the game very reliably, and it downs Fliers with ease. Exo-shock is a hell of a drug.

This is good advice! I love my Spicy Hot Nacho Deredo. It has a kick to it! But I also like the Plasma version with a Pavise walking alongside my Justarian Terminators (3++ for all my friends!).

I really think the only reason we see so many Contemptor Dreads on the table is because they come in the Calth box. They are not bad, but they are a points filler as far as I'm concerned. If I know my opponent has flyers, then taking a Mortis with Kheres is a smart move, and frees up my Deredo to do what it does best: Spicy Hot Nachoness!

I guess the reason we don't see many plasma Derodeos is they made it a bit too expensive for what it does. Besides Vultarax there aren't any FMC's in the game, so the need for AP2 Skyfire is low. And against ground targets, a Medusa is just more consistent and cheaper. Definitely give the arachnos lascannons a try sometime man, they're brutal. You basically get your Sicarian Venator but also anti-Flyer rolled in as well. It's 50pts but well worth it.

Yeah Contemptor Dreads are probably taken for that reason. I think after letting the dust settle, Cortus Dreads are only a problem when spammed. Mortis being a ranged unit means you can hang back and do all your work from a safe distance. They should re-work Primes though, Cortus kinda completely outclass them these days.
