For me its never about useful builds. I don't go for competitive builds. I go for fluffy story driven lists, hell my two chapters outside of space wolves are homegrown, it just means some of the narrative and individuality are lost, if want to help relics on a character and pay 300pts that should be my choice. I can only assume it's to counter things like Chapter Master Smashfudger et al

Yeah, we all have to suffer because of the people that abuse anything/everything they can to make sure they win this very important game (which seems to be almost everyone I know at my club)

Yeah, we all have to suffer because of the people that abuse anything/everything they can to make sure they win this very important game (which seems to be almost everyone I know at my club)

It's easy to gripe about the WAAC players (I do it too), but it's often an arms-race mentality which people inadvertently get swept up in.

There are some players who see it as a challenge to build the most powerful lists possible and milk every point for maximum power and efficiency. To them, that's part of the fun. Is the person who builds the fastest car they possibly can in their backyard a "bad guy" for going out of his way to find the best possible parts? Not necessarily...

The issue is that not everyone is given the same deck of cards to play with. They shouldn't because then it just becomes cookie-cutter red vs blue. But it's pretty clear that there is little (if any) grand vision for the game at a given time. Each Codex or supplement is reactive (and thus usually OP), or not aware at all of the way the game is actually played (and thus grossly inadequate).

So it's easy to criticize people who have "jerk" lists, when they may in fact be surprised that you didn't milk every point from yours. As always, communication and intentions (and updated rules <cough>) is key.

8th Edition presents a marvelous opportunity to reset things.

Can't agree more.

In our group we mostly build fluffy lists but that doesn't mean we don't try to make it as strong as possible (while staying fluffy). Last weekend for example I had to face a Baneblade (luckily one of the weaker ones) while I had no LoW or anything on that level.
Still won by far on Victory Points and almost tabled him (didn't have much on the table either at the end) and it was honestly one of the best games I had in a while. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(note: I was playing with my Tau, no Riptides, only CAD, Markerlight source only a 10 man Pathfinder unit and a Coldstar Commander with 2 Markerlight Drones...both arrived turn 4 due his Master of Fleet. So by no means a strong list!)

The comparison to the well known video game is one that speaks to me as I play said title, fortunately me and buddy have agreed that we will keep it as is and we are taking a far far more casual approach to the gaming these days. So I am happy, I have never been a fan of beardy lists (I have made one the once with a White Scars biker force and just wrecked face with it but didn't enjoy it at all.).

As a side note back to the my original topic - I'm pretty sold on the DC Chaplain and I think I am gonna get the model - I just need to figure out how to make him work aesthetically with my chapter. I would also like say that this has really reinforced for me how great this community is. thanks guys
