Guardians Of The Temple - Ultramarines 2nd Company

Recommended Posts

One of the armies i've always wanted but never found reason to start is the Ultramarines, i've long dreamt of owning the second company in all its splendour, with the recent release of Roboute Guilliman and the inclusion of Captain Sicarius in the Victrix Guard this seemed like the perfect time to start.

I decided as i'm starting a new project this would be a great opportunity to challenge myself, rather than trying to bling up like I do with my Black Templars, my Ultramarines will be light on the purity seals and litanies, the aim of the project will be to hone my edge highlighting skills, this is pretty much the cornerstone of most of my painting, I would like to use this as a way of crisping up my highlights and making a very clean crisp force of Ultramarines.

To start with i'll be using this piece of artwork as a bit of a check sheet as I work through painting my battle compant, it might take me a while but for now my aim is to paint a demi-company complete with transports by the end of May.

And here's the first squad, already I feel like i've learned a lot from these 10 marines, i'm currently debating whether to continue painting in batches of ten marines or to cut it down to five man batches.

Next up i''ll be painting a Razorback, I know it seems like an odd place to jump in but I need it for a painting competition on Saturday, it's currently sprayed Macragge Blue and it's been recess shaded, I'm going to tidy it up and get the base colours and shades on tonight.

i like your foundation concept of a crisp gw style army, the first batch captures that aim well, good gaming level standard, should be a pleasing army to own.  pleasing and functional.  then theres the other part of me that would refer you to ultramarines the movie, oh say half way through after the marines had patrolled across some ground and picked up some 'lovely' dust.  calth too, i would try to tempt the edge chipping on that studio set, eh enough from me no doubt ;)

I am also working my way through 2nd Company (70 marines in so far...) and started with batches of 10.

I'll be honest it was pretty soul destroying and difficult to maintain quality.

I swapped over to batches of 5 marines followed by either a vehicle or character and it has made a huge difference.

Yours are looking great too, really nice crisp blue. :)

Beautiful start! They almost look like stock 'Eavy Metal photos, so ai think you hit your target. Only suggestion wouod be to find a way to fix the sergeant's white helmet stripe- it needs some shading/highlighting because you can't see the transition from the top part of the helmet to the face plate.

But a great start so far!

Thanks bud, it is a bit more defined in person but I agree it definitely needs a little more, possibly something to address in the next squad.

Five man sets will reduce burn out I think, I would recommend that for sure.

I am loving your clean style there, very jealous as I have never managed to do that sort.

SWEET !!! Ultras . I do 5 man paint sessions it goes quicker.

Cheers guys, I agree about 5 man batches, definitely felt a lot of burnout, I think I like the mini reward I get half way through for painting 5 man batches too.

Thanks, that's what I want, a really crisp army that will look great in a cabinet and on a table, I really wanna try more weathering on things but I can never bring myself to do it, I always imagine marines furiously polishing their armour whenever they get a spare second.

Really great start. Looking forward to seeing more.

The only thing puzzling me it the odd shoulder pad on the far left marine in the top pic

Cheers, it's just a shoulder pad from the tactical squad, I think.

Thanks for the overwhelming positive reaction guys, i've currently got my Razorback in front of me and i'm desperately basecoating it so I can shade it before I go to bed tonight, ready to finish it tomorrow.

This week i've tinkered away at my Razorback, I think I've rushed it a little at first as I was initially trying to get it finished for a painting competition on Saturday, I used one of my Tauroxes in the end as I didn't want to spoil the Razorback rushing it, but I was able to spend some time today finishing it off.

I loved being able to use the Forge World doors on here, they really add something to the model, I might go back later and tidy up some of the highlights on here as I feel they could be crisper.

Overall I enjoyed painting the Razorback but it was quite different applying the colour scheme to a vehicle than to a regular marine.

Next up I've got a tactical squad which has been undercoated and sprayed blue, i've got some green stuff work to do on Captain Sicarius still and i'll be grabbing a command squad at the weekend.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've got my second Tactical Squad built now as well as a Command Squad, I've made a start on painting the Tactical Marines, I grabbed myself Kill Team Cassius the other day and converted up Chaplain Cassius so that he can join my Assault Marines.

I'm going to set myself a target of adding three units to the army over the next 4 weeks.
