Starting a 30K Legion

Recommended Posts

Im interested in starting out a 30k Ultramarines legion and was wondering what i should be getting to start off? I already play 40k and am pretty familiar with the rules and how to play and already have Dice, Tape Measure, ETC;

Im thinking of getting BaC and the Red Books to start off, but if you have any suggestions on what i should get to start off then dont hesitate to tell. Thanks biggrin.png

Just to add to the above point:

https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000/Tactics/Space_Marine_Legion_List_(30k)

The above link is a surprisingly good resource for giving you a general overview of the legions as a whole and what choices are available.

To be frank though, objectively any legion can do any type of army. It's just some do so better than others. Ultramarine tend to cover a lot of bases so there's few areas they fall flat on, it's just to get the most of the legion, you need to coordinate your units effectively (pretty fluffy actually!)

You can't go wrong with Calth. It's a really good set.

Useful additions to Calth (when you're ready) include:

MK3 marines from prospero (check out ebay) for variety of armour.

Another 5 cataphractii terminators (check out ebay).

After that really, it's up to you on how you want to sort out your army list. You can use a lot of the tank models from 40k (helps with the budget :p) to represent tanks in 30k though. Sometimes newbies feel like it's 'wrong' to do it, but it's A-ok :)

Personally I'd hold off on stocking up on anything just yet as the new edition of 40k is dropping in the next few months and all the indications thus far are that massive changes to the base rules are incoming. That will likely make the red books obsolete and there's no guarantee you'd enjoy playing a totally different version of 40k

Would i be able to (sparingly of course) use Indomitus Terminator Plate and Aquila Pattern Power Armour 'Mk 7', as they were just being rolled out at the onset of the HH? I think that a 'Mk7" Marine here or there could make it a bit more fluffy.

Mk 7 wasn't strictly available til the siege and even then it was for defenders of the walls. Indomitus was kind of about too, but from a gaming perspective Tartaros and cataphractii are the better suits to have for certain perks.

Ah, ok then. Thanks for informing me about that.

Depends entirely on the sort of army you want to have brother, but it couldn't hurt to get Calth and the Red Books

Im want my Army to be able to gun down my opponents troops before they can get in CC

Some Fullmentarus terminators wouldn't go astray in that case

How do i get them? Do i just attach normal CML to Cataphractii Terminators?

Why choose Ultramarines? Also, are you dead set on shooting?

Honestly, Imperial Fists and Iron warriors are both miles better at shooting than the UMs. If you go pure shooting, you'll be missing out on two of the other great close combat UM units.

Definitely look at the 1d4chan link, and try to decide what rite of war or theme you want to build your army around :)

I feel like no matter what, you can't go wrong with starting with:

1 generic PA HQ

2 x 10 Tactical Marines - all Bolters

2 Apothecaries

Then go from there.

While i would like my Army to shoot mainly, i would also like them to have a pretty decent chance of surviving CQC if they get caught up in it somehow. Also i like Ultramarines better than IF or IW

2x 10 man tac marine squads in rhinos

1x 10 man breacher squad with the few upgrade and all power weapons in rhino

10x size rains in a Spartan with your Praetor or Big g

Build around that. 1 Calth box and 300 quid of resin crack get you an awesome core.

censored.gif....that is far too helpful to be on 1d4chan

Edit: and according to the summaries I picked basically the two generic legions of 30k....IF being the standard Space Marines and Word Bearers being the standard Chaos Space Marines :/
