After much thought, and assistance from Carlson and Xisor (thanks guys), I decided to start my fresh start in the 40k hobby with a new army of space marines from the Salamanders chapter.

I have begun painting a test mini and would like some input from the esteemed members of this forum.

Keep in mind that I have been out of the hobby for some time and have just started painting again.

So with all of that in mind, below is a photo of my work to date.

Salamander

As you can see, I have yet to finish the base coat of the main green. His right knee-pad will be black with a flame icon.

Any tips, hints or criticisms are welcome.

Thanks in advance guys.

Thank you for the kind words Krash. I thought the same about the Aquila. I will need to order some new gold paints as my old ones have dried up since I last used them about five years ago.

I will have to see if I can beg,borrow,commandeer my friend's gold in the meantime!

Looks good to me. I prefer a bronze on the chest aquilla on Sallies (personal preference). Scales are also reasonably easy to free hand if you are looking for further ways to individualise your troops.

@ Our_Baz - I actually have some bronze paints. I will try bronze instead of gold and see what you guys think.

@ Deathspectersgt7 - I am sorry but progress will be painfully slow. I cannot dream of reaching the production speed you are capable of. I have been trying to paint for at least a half hour everyday but unfortunately real life jumps right in whenever it bloody feels like it.

I have been struggling a little in getting the paint to appear smooth on the model. I have watered down to make it thinner and the green has been achieved by between two or three layers. Any other ideas on how I can achieve a smoother finish?

Bro Castiel: the mini is looking very nice!

As far as smooth finishes, with a brush, multiple thin layers is the best way to go. I prefer not thinning paint with water, instead I use a mixture of matte medium and flow improver for non-metallics, and a mix of gloss and matte mediums and flow improver for metallics. You can also use air brush thinner (with a brush), or use an actual air brush.

@Bryan Blaire - Thanks for the advice. I have some medium on hand so I will give it a go tonight.

@Hushrong - Thanks Brother.

More painting tonight with any luck. I will post once I have something to share.
