Had my first two Shadow War games today

I had my first two shadow war games today, the first game was raid I believe, I chose to be the attacker but rolled a 1 for the numbers I could take limiting me to less than half my team, my opponent who was Necrons rolled 6 and got his full team to go on guard duty. He set up poorly I was able to set up near the objective and after some climbing and dropping was able to reach the door where I spent the next two turns banging my head against the wall as the strongest weapon I had was strength 5 and half the time I missed, the bunker was toughness 6 I believe.

Anyway I alerted the guards on the second time I shot and so he pretty much just blasted away at me, I got the door down to 1 wound left before my team was all on the floor and my leader out of action. I suffered no permanent causalities although my arc gunner received frenzy and one of the guys now hates the Necrons and missed the next game. My leader rolled a skill, I wanted to get him gun slinger or something but he got marksmen instead which allows him to reroll hits, must of been all that practice missing the bunker door.

Next game I faced Tau in Hit and run, I put the loot and Promethean cache that needed to be defended at the top of some buildings, I started off with only three to defend with whilst yet again the opponent had his full team, although this time I did have reinforcements. He knocked one of my guys down but he got back up later, during my second turn my boss and the arch gunner showed up and walked up right next to my opponent's commander, the arc rifle zapped him and knocked him down, later the tau commander would bleed out (on a roll of 6) and I would capture him so the Tau player has to fight me again to get him back lol. I threw everything at the drone, I took down him to WS 1/BS1 but couldn't knock him out, the arc rifle guy with frenzy even charged it, but the drone rolled another 6! and I rolled a 4 but due to other combat contributions I beat him by 1 only on initiative >.<. I could not get rid of the drone and it was still up at the end of the game.

I moved across to target the rest of his team, I took out a specialist with a rail rifle and another trooper, I lost one guy in return and nearly lost my leader, good thing as well since it was revealed the secret mission of the Tau was to take out my leader all along! The Tau broke, they were using thedrone's leadership ever since I killed his leader as well. I won and got three promethean caches. The shop unfortunately closed so wasn't able to give my guys any skills, I suffered no issues tho on the injury rolls, however as noted I took his leader captive and have to face him next week so he can attempt to rescue him.

One thing that stood out for me was my lack of Armour pen, both Tau and Necrons have by default strong weapons, str 5 with -2 ap, the only -ap I had was the galvanic rifles. I'm going to use my next 100 points to swap out the arc rifle on my specialist to a plasma caliver, that should deal with tough models and any objectives I need to destroy. The omnispex was great at singling out their opposing specialist so they couldn't receive cover, it tipped the fire fight in my favour as I was in hard cover but they were sitting ducks. Overall it was super fun, the first game was probably a blip and we were only playing on 2 by 4 but it's definitely a fun game for a campaign and rather quick and easy to get into compared to 40k.

Sounds awesome, thanks for the write up! I ended up showing up at my local shop 20 minutes before opening and got copy 5 of 5, but couldnt stick around for any of the games going on. Im looking forward to sinking my teeth into the rules.

Please keep us updated on your team's progress! Do you have any fluff on them at this point?

I'm not sure how pinning works, but I didn't get to shoot the Necrons as I was trying to destroy the bunker. As for the Tau, if I shot them they went down the boss went down and bled out, the specialist went down and stayed down, the drone though kept getting flesh wounds and losing stats but kept moving. The store manager was helping us though so I dunno if he missed the pinning.

As for lore, I've not got much yet, I call the team Search Unit Epsilon, and the names are Alpha Epsilon, Beta Epsilon, Mu Epsilon etc. I'm thinking of painting them in the Ryza colours despite my full skitarii army being in red, just fancied a change of look.

Edited my original post a bit to due to grammar and my rushing the explanation >.<

Thanks for the write-up WoT, I hadn't noticed the subtle change in the Hit and Run scenario - old Necromunda rules didn't say the objective was secret which made it too easy for the defender to neutralise the attacker's plan.

I'm pleased that you're enjoying the game. As you learned, it pays to be prepared for the Raid scenario. In Necromunda it was usually my strategy to have krak grenades in my gang somewhere. It'll be interesting how all the old ideas stand up with the drastically different equipment lists in Shadow War.

Great write up and I can't wait to get some games in with my shiny new Ork warband (With Kromlech Gentleork heads of course). Nothing more terrifying than a Crazed Ork with Monocle, Top Hat and Power Klaw politely trying to rip your arm off! I also played Gorkamorka to death so a nostalgia double whammy here for me.

What do people think about getting heavy hitting weapons into their mob form the start? Looks like they'll be really useful and maybe even vital? With Orks the only two options are a Power Klaw on the Nob or a Rokkit Launcher. I don't see an Ork with a Rokkit Launcher actually hitting anything during the game though...

I wouldn't talk about playing as Orks but if we're playing against Orks, I would be more worried about like 8 Boyz / Yoofs all armed with Slugga and Stikkbombs. Slugga so that they can use it in CC, Stikkbombs given their poor accuracy.

I've gone for a Big Shoota and Yoofs with Shootas for ranged options, just worried about not being able to damage anything with a high toughness, including objectives, with anything except the Power Klaw on my Nob.

As worried as you can be when paying Orks of course, they're hardly the serious gamers option!
