HH 43: Shattered Legions

Both.

Although certain people will grumble that the vast majority of the contents are already available in the Meduson anthology.

Grumble, grumble, as someone who bought the limited editions of Meduson and The Seventh Serpent,

so did not bother getting the anthology - Grumble.

Its basically the anthology minus Riven together with The Seventh Serpent.

Edit: Spelling and punctuation.

You are working on the assumption that there could have been a "new novel" to replace it, and that the amount of numbered entries is somehow limited.

DarkChaplain

- I do like the idea of 'it all would be released eventually' to everyone. That's a very consistent and good road.

But - it should have been released with the lot of anthologies like 'War without end/Legacies of Betrayal/Eye of Terra/Silent war' etc. separately from the main line of 'numbered novels'.

For example first anthologies like 'Tales of Heresy' or 'Age of Darkness' did contain some new stuff with at least 1 story important to the main line. So nothing wrong with that. But then we get into range of 30+ titles, that's simply milking the cow.

Why not release it for what it is - a compilation of already released stuff outside the main line. For some numbered line is a mandatory read - some even think that only numbered books move the story forward.

Also as I mentioned before - release it seprately of main line and at the same time give the readers who already read everything from that anthology (and spent much more money on separate stories) at least some new stuff to read.

And not even a new novel - give them a new novella (not LE) outside the main line - but new.

So that for all fans of HH it would be a month with something new. Instead of being a blank month for readers who already read Seventh Serpent and Meduson? Why not make everyone happy and get money at the same time?

Instead we had nothing HH important in February/March, now in April, nothing in May - and hola we have Crimson King only in 'July'! In July Karl!

Riven was part of Legacies of Betrayal and never part of Meduson as far as I am aware. The Keys of Hel ties into that storyline and was, though.

I always assumed every book in every format meant print, ebook and audio. I never thought those £30 limited ed books I was queuing up to buy would appear in the regular numbered books. The same numbered books i was collecting, so I would have to buy them or else interrupt a collection i had invested years in.

I'm sorry even though I love BL and the Heresy but the inclusion of these stories in the numbered series was the most crappy kicks in the balls they could have given.

Thankfully I stopped buying the little ones once I was aware of their evil plan and so I can buy this one without regret.

I don't believe BL would do something like this anymore. It was a tactic one would expect from the old management. Thankfully we have moved on. The legacy of this lives on in the heresy but hopefully crap like this will die with it too.

I forgive them but it was still a poor show.

@DarkChaplain - Yes you are right about Riven never being part of the Meduson anthology as I just checked the Black Library website, my mistake as I was thinking as you say of The Keys from Hel.

What Shattered Legions does is give me the option of buying the contents of the Meduson anthology at £20 (Doubling up on my copies of Meduson and The Seventh Serpent) which is £15 cheaper than buying the Meduson antholgy which according to the website is still available.

Will probably pick this up, even though I've got two copies of Meduson already (the original WHW exclusive, and the second publishing with the audio dramas on CD) and The Seventh Serpent. The completionist / collector in me has OCD issues around missing numbers....

I'm not too fussed about this coming out as a regular hardback - the physical copies of Meduson previously were limited either due to physical location or limited numbers. Gives everyone else a chance who didn't get opportunity before, or doesn't want to spend £35+.

I've finally finished reading this. It was a bit ok but generally just points out that the Iron Hands are completely useless and just cattle waiting to be slaughtered.

As they should - cause that's the first years of HH, years of betrayal and impossible scenarious.

But in general content of this one is so-so. Some stories are good, some blank, some bad. I stand by my opinion that it shouldn't have been released as a numbered anthology.

OK, beginning my trudge:

Meduson is superb. In places it makes me think of a defter run at the way elemental imagery is presented to characterise the Salamanders. It also treads an excellent line in portraying a more human Iron Hand.

Unforged is a little forgettable, but I quite like the main situation, as Astartes having to negotiate their environment comes up quite rarely overall.

Grey Talon, superb as well. I want more of Hibou, the tiny bit of Abaddon is cool, it's neat to get into Bion Henricos' head and oh man, that Medusa thread is such a treat.

The Keys of Hel - so much dark. Good dark.

You saw that events in 'Grey Talon' took place before Abnett's 'Little Horus' short cause

Aximand kills Henricos in that story
.

It would be nice to see the actual continuation to that. How Hibou would 'behave' and fight further on

without Bion

Real shame Retribution failed to give us Hibou as a character.

The Serpent Beneath left me rather cold, I have to say. None of the characters interested me, though I guess he was neat.

Unspoken was nice, if unessential.

Hand Elect was superb, especially for the Mechanicum stuff.

The Either was hyped a fair bit, and I found it didn't really get into the Cthonian anything like as much as I'd hoped. Again, I find McNeil's take on the SoH characters lacking even when their parts are only as small as in an equivalent Abnett story, particularly Abaddon just being Mr Unsubtle Grumpypants.

You don't like 'The Serpent Beneath'? WOW.

As for everything else great view. As for the Either - I didn't actually bothered with Marr - but after the Abnett and McNeil stories here I do want to know how that Meduson vs Either dance will end. So with that in mind and truly mashochistic feelings I would be set to read 'Old Earth' :ermm:
