Terminator Combi-Weapons

Looking around at various army list posts and considering my own builds, I wondered how people felt about combi-weapons on their Terminators in HH.

At 7 points each they aren’t an overly expensive upgrade, and the obvious stand-outs are still the plasma and melta.

Melta seems to suffer from more issues than in 40k in that most legions aren’t able to deep strike terminators, and the abundance (or potential) of Armoured Ceramite means vehicles are much better protected. Even if deep striking is an option, how viable is melta compared to plasma in HH?

How many people equip their Terminators with any iteration of the combi-weapon? And if so, which type do you prefer? Also, do you mix their type within a unit?

Plasma - getting a volley equivalent to a support squad for 70points is pretty brutal. When coming out of a transport it means that you'll almost always get it off too.

Paying for just straight up Volkite chargers is also an option though.

A unit of terminators with combi plasma and teleporter transponders is a staple for most of my NL lists. Can't go wrong with a unit deep striking in an unleashing a full plasma volley. Wouldn't usually bother with melta, plasma is just more versatile and good enough to deal with side/rear armor.

I am sad that aside from the sergeant, my Gorgons can't have combi-weapons. I suffered badly encountering an opposing unit equipped with combi-plasmas. I'll be sure to model a regular Legion Terminator Squad with them in the future.

Magnetise. Doesn't matter how much the majority say Armoured ceramite is prevalent, there's always something that will go without it that will need to die. So having an interchangeable loadout between elite/light vehicle death to I need this armoured target dead will put you in reasonable stead.

Plus it always serves to remind your group/friends that they should always put Ceramite on those vehicles.

Or have 2 squads, one with plasma and one with melta. Whatever floats your boat ^_^

Even with Armored Ceramite Melta has a decent chance of blowing up anything under AV 14. I lost a leviathan to a melta support squad (my first game with the levy...). It is still str 8, and also has a purpose in killing multiwound models.

I have a soft spot for melta guns as they have terrific kill power against pretty much anything in the game and don't have the suicide risk of plasma. If you use 10 combi plasma guns you are risking close to 2'gets hot' wounds which i feel is a bit rich at nearly 40 points per model, and you double this if you rapid fire.

Yeah it's a risk, but for that small risk of losing a model in +2 armor you literally double your firepower, so the risk is well worth it in my mind. And against any weak side/rear armor values, plasma will do just as well as melta. Now of course against heavier armor melta will do better, but there's always the possibility of dealing with AC, which is a tossup so I'd rather rely on more reliable anti tank sources and stick to plasma for my terminators.

Another point in favor of combi plas, if the terminators are deep striking you only need to be within twelve of your target, which isn't too risky a drop. Six inches though for melta range, that's a bigger risk.

I arm my Alpha Legion Terminators (in Dreadclaws) with combi-plasmas. I've got a Machine Killer combi-melta Veteran squad and a Leviathan with Melta Lance (both in drop pods), so the Terminators are their to kill infantry once the Veterans and Leviathan have destroyed their transports.

Edit: Also, with 'Mutable Tactics' I'll nearly always be taking 'Tanks Hunters' (I don't need 'Infiltrate' because my army deploys via drop pod), so the plasmas can also be useful against most vehicles (especially when Dynat leads the army with his +1 to damage rolls in the enemy deployment zone). Of course this is only applicable to the Alpha Legion, but I wanted to share some of my reasoning :)
