Making Headhunters viable with the Leviathal

Hey Guys and Girls,

Before I'm given the doom and gloom don't take em... Or there are better choices out there... I want to take the Headhunter Leviathal. The question is how do I make it the most viable.

Two options I've been considering are Combi Meltas or Flamers. Both give me the option to shoot and charge plus I still have the banestrike ammunition at my disposal. Heavy Bolter is a must as well.

What are units that synergize well with these bad hombres? I feel like sky hunter slayers to mobilly support them, maybe a fire raptor? I will have veterans in the list as well. Fear the not.

I'd love to hear what y'all have to say. Winning is an added bonus with this army, but not mandatory. Fluff for the fluff god.

Honestly you want to avoid making then more expensive I wouldn't add any upgrades to a unit besides aa and a melta bomb on sergeant. They simply cost far to much to spend more points trying to make them kill things in my opinion especially when this row says they need to footslog.

I believe tou can deploy quad mortars normally in this right of war and that's honestly your best bet just use shatter shells for anti tank and frag / phosphex for infantry.

The problem is headhunters are just to overcosted and schizophrenic and the right of war doesn't actually help them and only.makes your army worse.

Agree. Nothing can by done with this terrible unit especially with a RoW that is imho hands down the worst (take multiple of overpriced, weak unit to get useless bonus and reroll and of course limitations that make it even more worse).

Even in totally non competitive group it's the worst you can get.

I'm getting the feeling that this line wasn't really read and/or peeps are doing the exact opposite of what this thread is for.

I mean, if you're not going to actively participate in the topic, why bother posting?

There are a lot of problems with the Leviathal and synergy, like leaving all your vehicles in Reserve. However, you could still take Skorr and pick Strategic Genius for some guaranteed on-board reserves manipulation. It's a little theme-breaking, but you're also not barred from Fortifications. A Comms Relay might not be a bad idea. The Alpha Legion had a hacked comms terminal or beacon in place and that's what drew the Headhunters in?

Probably keep the Headhunters themselves as cheap as possible. Combi-weapons is tempting, because you can make use of the BS5, but it's really going to depend on how they deploy. Starting on the board and infiltrating is risky and I'd keep those plain. If they end up in a Dreadclaw though (see below), maybe plasma? But you have better sources of plasma and I still feel like trying to spend more to make a bad unit mediocre (and a higher priority target) is a big mistake.

You can still get Drop Pods to come instantly, so another way to build this list would be to lean into Drop Pods as much as you can. Get Leviathans coming down, maybe vets in Dreadclaws with Sniper/plas/combi-plas load-outs. Machine Killer vets in Dreadclaws with melta could be ok if you run a list with Dynat for S9 AP0? Can even stack with Tank-hunters from Mutable Tactics.

Remember that you pretty much have to go and kill the enemy Warlord, too. No matter what it is, because if you don't that's D3 VPs down the drain and you still stand to lose another to Martial Hubris. Combi-plas vets will help, plasma support squads, etc, but you'll need a way to take out a Warlord's transport if they have one. Grav-rapiers and shatter shell quad rapiers are your friends, here. They'll start on board, are resilient, and you can get them positioned utilizing Scout or Infiltrate from Mutable Tactics. They're cheap too, and if you have a ton you're also more resilient to the Martial Hubris VP loss.

If you want to benefit from False Flags and go first, don't forget to attempt to concentrate all of your firepower into a few high-priority units so that the rest of their army has to deal with the leadership check. This is a good time to blow up vehicles, because they won't be taking the test.

You've set yourself on a difficult road! Fingers crossed that Headhunters and/or their Rite get redressed in an 8th edition update or something. But otherwise that's the best advice I've got to make the list functional.

Perfect and exactly what I was looking for. I heard that they were getting an update... Hopefully that's true.

I figured quad mortars would help. I just want to avoid having them be a crutch. I was thinking volkite Calivers would help.

List can look a bit spammy:

HQ - Whatever

Elites - Quad Mortars

Elites - Quad Mortars

Troops - Headhunters with combiplasma in Dreadclaw

Troops - Headhunters with combiplasma in Dreadclaw

Troops - Veterans with meltas

Heavy - Leviathan Lance/Drill

Heavy - Leviathan loadout of choice

LOW - Alpharius

Alpharius and Vets arrive for BS5 preferred enemy tank hunting melta (optionally S9 or snipers), two Leviathans for more anti-tank and big distraction carnifex role, headhunters come in later with BS5 preferred enemy plasma to kill the warlord.

Pretty sure that's legal and about 2500 points unless I'm forgetting something about the Rite.
