Primarch Book 4: Perturabo-Hammer of Olympia

Wow I think BL is doing faster shipping to the US. Just got this badboy in the mail today. I figure start a thread on this one. Aside from Guilliman, I got this as a LE. Very pretty, love the chevron stuff in the book. Looking forwarding to reading this one, just debating of reading Magnus before. I just finished Russ which was an awesome book and heard good things about Magnus. I have confidence with this one as I have loved all of Guy Haley's stuff...he is breaking into my holy three (ADB, abnett, and French) with Wraight close behind.

Also I have to say the artwork is getting much better minus the glowing eyes (really hate that aspect of the art). Aside from the art being done by Neil Roberts I think the Forgeworld artwork for the primarchs have been awesome and sort of wish the primarch series was in that style. Russ was just plain awful...reminds of rock music. Perturabo looks pretty good here, looks like the forgeworld model minus Forgebreaker (which he obviously does not get until later).

The whole Hrud thing is very intriguing plus anything on Dantioch is gravy. Also Perturabo going ape:cuss on his homeworld will be good times...

I loved how perfectly Guy showed both sides of Perturabo that we've seen before - some people complained that John French's version in 'The Crimson Fist' wasn't the same as Graham McNeill's in 'Angel Exterminatus' (which always confused me, since the novella came first...) but this shows those two extremes of his personality.

Also, it's very important to note WHOSE point of view shows him as a vengeful, spiteful curmudgeon, and how he sees himself very differently, as a misunderstood genius.

(Perturabo. Not one of the authors.)

I do find some primarch or marine portrayals to be jarringly inconsistent

...but it makes sense for late GC Perturabo to be primarily a brutal dictator harbouring the aspirations of a disapponted genius.

Also...different PoVs, different situations of course

I always thought that McNeil's Perturabo was a good characterization but it should have come before Olympia while French was perfect post Istvaan IV. Which does this one (if either) did it lean to?

Edit : Laurie answered this three posts prior : derp

Absolutely not interested in his saving graces so late into the Heresy - I was expecting a fully described war against hrud migration, that's all.

I'm halfway through and I'm really enjoying it especially the early sections.

Please give us spoilers about war against Hrud part. Not interested in Lord of Iron.

Finished it last night. I have to say its a great book, and the it shows great insights as to Perturabo's early life and the affinity he held for his homeworld and its culture. He did seem to be a miserable git the entire time, even from a youth. It made me wonder out of all the Primarchs whether if he had been found by the Emp first and not Lupercal what a great leader he would have been.

Laurie - I must have missed the clue on the migration thing :(

It did make me wonder why some Primarchs such as Russ, Roboute and the Lion are so affected by where they grew up, whereas others are totally dislocated from it (Angron, Perturabo etc). There is a great bit where he compares himself to one of his brothers, and where his astartes realise they are Olympian, but Perurabo always said he was not.

Overall I'd rank it just behind the Russ book so far, but only cos i love the Lion.

i'm a tad confused by the description of perturabo's relationship to his home world- did he have an affinity with it or was he dislocated by it? or do you mean a mix of both?

right - early life of Perturabo, instead of mass war and timebreaches of Hrud Migration.

It's like watching Bleach - and then 45 episode feeler arc 10 years ago start at the most interesting 'what next' moment.... How do I love that branching (sarcasm)

Can't agree with you on this one Heri. Much as it is the caveat of the genre, the battles have never been why I read BL. Character is absolutely #1 in importance for an interesting narrative, that's why everyone liked the politics in The Beast Arises ad didn't care for the actual war.

Also, the flashback portions of Bleach were the best parts, and that is commonly agreed upon.

I enjoyed it, it's been my favourite of the primarch novels so far.

The Hrud are bad mother fo's, and I understand they were used to show how low the morale in the IW was at that point in crusade, but I think there was too much on the Hrud.

BUT, I loved the part of boy 'Bo and his assumptions. In regards too how I felt about Olympians, he just new he wasn't one of them from the beginning and was made for bigger things, so he never made a deep connection, they were a tool to use and then dispose of when they had served their purpose.

It's a good read though, like I said my favourite so far, followed by Russ(due to all the interaction with the lion, not the Bolter porn bits) Magnus and then Guilliman.

I'm intrigued to read the Lorgar volume( and to add to it to my collection) but does anyone know who is next, as I'm really looking forward to the Mortarion, Alpharius, Sanguinius, Lion and Horus surprisingly enough... fulcrum could be interesting too, if it's on Chemos and saving the legion. Oh and Curze, and Dorn!

Look forward to reading! Only read Russ and Guilliman so far with Magnus up next them this one. I will probably have the same order of preference as above.

As for what is next based on teasers it looks like Fulgrim is up on the dockets. I actually don't know too much about Fulgrim's "childhood" so getting some of that and maybe his bond with Ferrus which makes this like watching a highway wreck since we all know the outcome. I think Reynolds is doing so will be very good.

I will end up getting the whole series whether as the cheaper amazon slow release or LE. I am def looking forward to the Lion (by another author), Cruz (although ADB really has showed his upbringing) and Dorn. The latter I def will get as LE (maybe some walls of terra theme) and hope it shows how the IF and IW hate each other so much. The dorn and perturabo hate would be fun to read.

I'm in the same boat. I get fatigued by the relentless focus on battles. It is one of the reasons I really disliked the period where we'd be getting very straightforward, product-line oriented novels. I don't care about the gore or wars in detail. I like being taken to interesting settings with curious spins on warfare. I care about great characters with a lot of grey areas. I like seeing characters develop from point A to point B throughout a book or story arc.

For that, the Primarch books have been great fun so far.

"FORGET NUANCE, I WANT SPACE FIGHTS."

Andrey, never change.

After 100 books in HH (novels + novellas and audios) - YEAH Laurie - to feth with fillers.

Dark Chaplain  - about what you said:  'I'm in the same boat. I get fatigued by the relentless focus on battles. 1) 'we'd be getting very straightforward, product-line oriented novels' - really? And what period that was - never in all it's history of HH BL ever published a story driven novels after the first 3 books. After 1 story drive book - 3 fillers, again 1 story driven book - 2 fillers etc. etc. And it was good - if you were at the Istvaan 5 - Prospero Burn period. But now? Really?

And every BL novel is one way or another is a 'product-line oriented novels'.

2) 'I like seeing characters develop from point A to point B throughout a book or story arc. For that, the Primarch books have been great fun so far' - right, that's exactly what happened with Guilliman and Magnus books.

Without again any pun intended to you, but  sometimes it's truly easy to imagine that BL pay you to find good points even in their worst books.

A powerful book. Best of the primarch series so far.

Sure...In your humble opinion. Until I will fully read it (and I started it yesterday)  the best is 'Leman Russ' so far (and not because of the space puppies - but because it is written by Wraight)
