DuskRaider's Shadow War Word Bearers Kill Team - INQ28 Too!

Recommended Posts

Thanks! I may redo the Beastman's right arm a little, the glue went on a little strong, but only because with the pose he's currently in it's only barely attached to the arm itself... I may have to do his greenstuff work early. I still have some more Cultists to do, but hopefully they'll be done soon. That also includes a Grenade Launcher-toting Acolyte, which I ordered a couple different variants from Anvil so I can see what works best. I really like the China Lake model myself, but I also figure the Cult would be supplied with more sophisticated weaponry here and there by the Legion itself. I also have a feeling I'll keep making models for the warband, if not for variety and eventual expansion then just because I've been having a lot of fun with it. I also intend on making another version of the Coryphaeus for INQ28, most likely using Zardu Layak as a base. Until next time!

Another update... this time with more Cultists and a family shot. These are two Cultists, one armed with an Autogun and Flail and another armed with a Shotgun and Maul. Pretty self explanatory, they've got character without going too far... which maybe I'm still a little too limiting with the models still. I was really hoping to explore the grimdark / weird side of 40K, but I've restrained myself for the sake of fluff. Ah well... the third guy is an Initiate and is armed with a Maul and Sword (technically a piece of metal strapped to his wrist). His right wrist also sports a remote detonation device, something the Magus uses on Initiates in case they attempt to flee or are outed as spies. Design wise, I didn't want to make the Initiate look too different because honestly, all they are is dudes with improvised armour and masks. If they take their golden masks off, they blend into any crowd, which is the point. The ability to conceal themselves in plain sight.

This next shot is the Coven thus far. I'm still awaiting the Anvil Industry order which contains the Grenade Launcher to build my Acolyte, various Shotguns so I can choose one for my Beastman (I'm thinking sXs double bbl shotgun), and a couple other bits and pieces to spice them up a bit. I still have to add other parts to them that I had gotten from AI's Trench Melee kit. As you can also see, my Magus has received his Hand Cannon, it's been scoped, and I fixed the Chainsword so it doesn't look like it's about to fall over. Still dreading that greenstuff, though...

And finally... this is the original Beastman i had assembled. He originally had the Extra Arm mutation, so I obviously wanted to model that on the mini. The issue was, he's also supposed to have a sword and shotgun, but after posing him with the flail (which I wasn't able to get in the right pose either) I kinda ran out of space on him... his general appearance fits the Coven a bit more I guess, but he also looks plainly Tzeentch while my Beastman is supposed to be dedicated to Khorne. Oh well...

I still have some stuff coming from MaxMini as well, namely their Necro Hounds and this really cool Sorcerer model. The Hounds will eventually be included in my Coven as Cyber Mastiffs for my Magus and the Sorcerer may be used to lead an NPC Nurgle Coven / Plague Zombie horde.

Unfortunately, the flail wielding Beastman didn't make the cut. Maybe he'll be an NPC or something, or perhaps I'll keep him around in case the warband grows larger and I can fit him in. I think the one with the Massive Weapon is much better and is also less god-specific, which suits an Undivided Cult from an Undivided Legion.

Just to prove I haven't forgotten about my Shadow War Marines, here's some pics of their current state. Working overnights has really out a damper on my painting time so they're definitely not as far along as I'd like, but I'm also taking my time with their from as I want it to be more like that which is on the Gal Vorbak I did, what? Two years ago now? There's a lot of wear and corruption on the armour, it's been on the Warp for several millennia so it's going to look funky.

As you can see, I'm also painting their heads separately. They're pretty much done other than the Champion's daemon visage. Each one is unique to give the feeling that they aren't just random Marines... these are actual men. I avoided any heads with corruption, they're pure in their purpose (other than the Coryphaeus, which definitely harbours a Daemon of Tzeentch in his soul). I may do their eyes pitch black to make them a little unnerving.

I've also included two pics of the newest members, one of which may actually be swapped into the initial lineup... a brother with the Mark of Khorne and two Chainswords. The second is quite obviously another Autocannon. I still have two other Marines from the original batch with their base trim still incomplete, so hopefully I'll prime these two and bring them up to speed soon.

Enjoy!

Oh, also... I've ordered a couple Windsor and Newton drawing inks, I think for my INQ28 Word Bearers in going to go nonmetallic and use the inks on a white base, see what kind of new look I can get. This will only be for Inquisimunda and I'm a little apprehensive to veer off course of my usual paint scheme, but why not try something new, right?

Another exciting update coming at you...

The Anvil Industry order arrived yesterday, which meant I was finally able to arm my Beastman and also assemble the final member of my Coven. The last guy is an Acolyte armed with a Grenade Launcher and Knife, as you can see... he has a more ornate mask to pick him out amongst the others and show his elevated rank. As for the Beastman, he's been given a sXs double bbl shotgun, whichI sawed the barrels down to make it a bit more compact. I also finally did the greenstuff, albeit not the greatest... but it gets the job done.

Sigh...

So I'm doing this right now as I write this at work. It seems my ink experiment with the Word Bearer has been a failure. There are so many things I can blame this on, from thinking watered down red ink on white would be anything but pink to the stippling of greys and brown on said white base to give the armour a more worn look to attempting to add a Carrosburg Crimson wash to the red ink to attempt to make it more red.

This is... bad. The more it dries, the more it seems the Crimson wash it somehow stripping it all and making some of it black... Not sure how. Sadly, it seems this poor Astartes is destined for a Simple Green bath and I'll try again with a Leadebelcher base / Runefang Steel highlight. So disappointed right now...

I'm gonna give this one more try... another wash of Vermilion Ink and maybe (maybe) a very watered down Carrosburg and see if I can salvage this disaster.

Thanks, Soric! You know, I've always wondered if Skeksis was the inspiration for the Lord of Change. Certainly looks Tzeentchian.

Paint has been applied...

I finally got the Word Bearer the way I wanted him, which unfortunately involved stripping the paint completely and starting over. This time he was based the way i usually do them (Leadbelcher with Runefang Steel highlight) but I applied multiple layers of Vermilion and Orange ink with a final layer of Blood for the Blood God and washed with Carrosburg Crimson and Nuln Oil in some spots. I'm willing to now say that the inks have failed me... or rather, I think I failed them. I need to do more homework on these before I go any further with them, as you can see on the inside of my Magus' cloak (I removed the ink layers with water and a brush).

The flesh is complete on everyone, as is the clothing but unfortunately the highlights and tones were washed out of the pictures which is a shame because I spent a good 6 hours on each. I'll be moving onto armour shortly, which should be fairly straight forward.

I've also assembled 3 Chimaerics for the Cult. I purchased the Necrohounds from MaxMini and was going to build them as is, but had a change of heart. I figure these may have originally been human but the Legion (most likely with the assistance of the Dark Mechanicus) butchered them into what you see now. For my backstory, these creatures are used as hunting hounds on Sicarus and are a gift from the Coryphaeus to his Vicar (the Magus).

Enough words, here's the pictures. Comments and criticism are welcome as usual.

The Coven has reached about 95% completion barring the bases, which I have yet to get from Secret Weapon. I'm going with the Scrap Yard series, they look great for Underhive representation.

But I'm not updating to show off the entire warband. I've finished assembling an INQ28 version of Coryphaeus Harazsk, keeping him more in line with the grimdark feel of the Coven and game itself. While the Shadow War model looks much more grand and ornate fitting the 40K design, this version skips the grandiose and I think it makes him look more sinister. His armour is warped and corrupted, showing the battle he's constantly waging to keep control of his body away from the Tzeentchian Daemon that shares his soul.

His blade has also been given a much darker version in the form of an Anakatis Blade. I decided to still use one of the Puppet War Daemon heads, they're too great not to use. With this version, I think it tones down his importance to the Chapter/ Legion and brings him more down to the level befitting INQ28. Rest assured, he'll still be extremely powerful and thus most likely an NPC or a special character for unique scenarios. Let me know what you think!

Update time.

Unfortunately, my friends are still dragging their feet in INQ28, mainly due to getting prepared for 8th Edition. We are still playing Shadow War, however, so I felt compelled to complete at the very least my base Chaos Kill Team. We have not officially started our campaign yet, as I didn't want to without at the very least my starting lineup painted to completion.

I'm pleased to say that my goal has been reached. The first four Word Bearers Shadow Operatives have been completed and are ready to hit the field to spread the good word. The only thing I need to finish is adding some matte finish to the decals and perhaps stiple some black on them as well to look a bit worn, but otherwise they're good. They'll be mounted on the Dark Ritual bases, the same used on my 30K Word Bearers.

I was thinking a little more about the stark contrast between my Shadow War Kill Team and my INQ28 Coven, and it occurred to me why this is... my Shadow War Marines would be their appearance as seen through the eyes of the Astartes themselves. The noble black knight, pure in their quest to spread the word of their Gods. The Coven, however, is how everything appears to the common man (us). The Astartes are more monsters than men, hulking warriors whose millennia of Warp exposure have twisted them into the creatures they are.

This is clearly seen with the two versions of Coryphaeus Harazsk himself. The Shadow War version has a sort of dark regal aura about him. His armour is finely wrought and ornate, hauntingly beautiful. His Sword is clean to the point that the steel almost glows, giving the feel of a holy weapon. Contrast this to the INQ28 version, whose armour has begun to meld with his flesh. He has a slight hunch to him, as if he's becoming something more bestial. The blade is a twisted perversion of steel, the complete opposite of how he would view it himself.

It's also quite evident in the Cultists themselves. While the Shadow War Cultists look a bit generic and disposable, the Coven members each have their own unique personality and style. That isn't to say the Chapter would view their Cults as throw away (quite the opposite), but it does show they take a backseat to the Astartes themselves.

Anyhow, enough of this rambling, let's get to the pics. I'm also currently halfway through two more Tactical Marines, started on the second Autocannon Gunner and twin-blade armed Marine, and have been working a bit on the Cultists themselves. Enjoy!

Thanks man, I was going for something much darker... like my Death Guard of old.

So in the spirit of the new forum rules, I'm posting these. No real reason and I don't intend on featuring them much in this topic, but simply because I can.

These are my Blood Axe Orks. Well... a Kill Team's worth. I have a small army, but didn't take more pics. They're obviously WWI/WWII German themed and all Kromlech models (except for the War Boss, he's a converted Badrukk).

  • 1 month later...

Yeah, I'm definitely active but Photobucket is trying to get me to pay to post images on sites. I have hundreds of pictures on my Photobucket that I would have to download, upload onto Imgur, and figure out where they go in my various threads over a few sites. Honestly, just not worth it.

You should still be able to go directly to my Photobucket (of you can navigate through the ads) and see everything, every picture has a title explaining what it is. The site screwed everyone.
