GRC's Scions: Shadow War

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

After a long time of restraining myself from buying Guardmen, I finally caved in with the new release of Shadow War. My original plan was to get the boxed game and use the Scouts as my Kill team, since I could reinforce those with the guys I already had. Alas, we all know how that particular release went. With the recent pre-orders for the rulebook, I figured I might as well do something else than Scouts, since I'm getting a bit tired of painting marines.

I never had the intention to start a new army, but I always loved the look of the Scions. Building a kill team for SW should be great excuse to paint some of those Scions I always wanted. I already assembled and primed 5 legs w/ torsos, so updates should come swiftly (more or less).

Progress:

Finished

- Sergeant with melee fighter

Cool model,

where is the head from?...

cheers Mithril

I have truly no idea. Like I said, I borrowed this model from an abandoned IG-army.

Edit: Otto von Bludd is the man you need

Looks good, the only thing I'd consider is going for a different yellow - a more sandy one perhaps like Tallarn Sand?

Thank you for the sugestion, Tallarn sand does look more appropriate for desert camo. But I'm actually going for a more vibrant yellow, since these will be a mostly urban PDF. The desert camo is just to prevent using standard khaki tunics. I'll try to figure out some fluff later, it should explain my intentions better rather than my initial limited introduction

Those are the excellent Kolony Militia heads from Pig Iron productions.  I use them as well as their officer heads for all my guardsmen!  Their pricing is excellent as well.

Made some progress, but I kinda messed up. I painted the 5 guys I has in the colourscheme I originally intended. However, it was a long and horrible progress, yellow is a horrible colour to work with. As a result, I tossed my guys back into a bath of Dettol. I ended up with a more traditional scheme, since it's more forgiving to paint than my previous yellow crap.

And here he's next to the original tester

Now I have the new scheme nailed down, future updates should be more regular.

I like it! I don't know if it's just the pic but the clothing looks a little flat, maybe a highlight on them. That said, easily better than 80% of what I face across the table and neater painting that I could achieve with those lovely edge highlights on the green.

Good point, I'll give them an extra highlight. Thanks for the comment!

New scheme rocks it :cool.: , perhaps keep the yellow wiggle as your super specialist since he is packing a melta gun :tongue.: it would be a shame not to see him in your team!.

cheers Mithril

Glad you like it, maybe it wasn't a bad change after all   I actually borrowed the yellow guy from my brother in law, since he had a guard army that hasn't seen much paint. His wife didn't like all those models around the house, so I kept them safe for him. Unfortunately he asked them back, so 'Sir Desert the First' will be joining his brothers back home.

Time for a BIG update. Let's start with some fluffy stuff.

Piscina IV has always been a harsh world. The planet is under constant threat from Orkish Infestation. During one the regular cleansing raids of the Planetary Defence Forces, an ancient industrial complex was discovered in a completely overgrown section of the planet's jungle. After a week of fierce battle against the Ork hive that was nested near the complex, the Imperial forces managed to secure the facility. The techpriests performed their sweep of the facility and found previously unknown STC's for both Civilian and Military use. Hoping for a boon of the Mechanicum, the local Governor handed the STC's over to the nearest Forgeworld. The Governor recieved his boon in the form of several shipments of military gear, for the gratitude of the Mechanicum was great. Included with these shipments was a whole container filled with armour and weaponry used by the Militarum Tempestus. The Governor immediately created a special team of Commando's geared with the exquisite weaponry and tasked them with missions of delicate matters. These mission included raids and sabotage against Gangs, assassinations, scouting of Orks encampments and so much more. The Commando's became the scalpel alongside the Guard's sledgehammer, making the enemy bleed before the troops come in for the killing blow.

And now the painting! My second Scion is finished:

gallery_92826_13417_140417.jpg

And the sniper of the team as well. This one isn't from a regular kit, but it isn't that obvious when viewed from the front.

gallery_92826_13417_34012.jpg

gallery_92826_13417_140417.jpg

Varek Zaytsev is an odd member of Squad Ares. He often performs missions on his own or at a great distance from his team. The Commando's aren't loved by the denizens of the city, so to make sure Varek doesn't get assaulted by agitated civilians and gangers, he usually dresses in tattered local clothing instead of armoured gear. The thin pieces of clothing offer way more protection against civilian discontent than the Carapace armour the Commando's utilise. Varek prefers his ancient precisionrifle for the same reason, since the standard issue sniper rifles attract too much attention. With his battered rifle Varek manages to get almost anywhere, and is usually mistaken as a simple Ganger. Although is rifle is no match to a standard sniper rifle, he compensates his damage output by using toxic rounds. His ability to disappear in the crowd and take down targets by inflicting a mere scratch, makes Varek a truly efficient member of the Commando's.

Onwards to the next Scion, slow but steady...

Edit: they look better in real life, I swear! :laugh.:

Further reinforcements:

After finishing the guys I have in the paintstation, I should be good to go for at least a couple of games, maybe even a whole campaign. Future additions would be a flamer, an additional sniper and some more veterans to replace the Kasrkin. I've got to say that the Imperial kits are fun to use, I actually like them more than of my normal Space Marines. Might grab another Start Collecting when I'm done.

My initial team is ready! Unfortunately I've played a couple of games of SW:A with my guys, and they were lacking considerably in some areas. I knew I wouldn't have to invest in melee-heavy squads, but totally ignoring melee-weapons was a terrible idea. Even after painstakingly keeping my distance, some of your guys are going to get in hand-to-hand combat. They got butchered when it came to that, so I'm converting my Lasgun-wielding sarge to a boltpistol / chainsword melee-unit and I'm adding another fighter with laspistol and sword. It's still my objective to avoid close combat, but I should be more or less prepared to catch inevitable charges. The grenade launcher hasn't been performing that well either for his high pointscost, so I'm building a heavy flamer to replace than one as well.

And now some pictures!

These are the recruits, wielding regular lasguns. The grenade and pistol on 2 guys are just there because I had a VERY limited stock of bits for guardsmen, I didn't pay the points for them.

gallery_92826_13460_253102.jpg

And now to the veterans. I have 3 plastics models, 2 metal Kasrkins and one sarge. The sarge has gotten his arms ripped of at the moment and awaits his new melee weapons. The rifle will be given to another veteran in a couple of days to crank up the number of veterans with rifles to 6.

gallery_92826_13460_240352.jpg
And these are my specialists. The sniper and plasma have proven their worth already, they have most of the kills on their names. The grenada laucher? Not so much. He usually scatters a minimum of 8 inches or ends in a dud and fails every single ammo roll he has to make. A flamer is already on it's way to replace poor Phineas.

What paints are you using for your green and khaki?

I have a very similar scheme, with a lighter green but yours look a bit... brighter and nicer.

Oh, yes. And good work, of course

I'm using a base of Castellan Green, then I go over that one with Loren Forest and i end with a highlight of Elysian green. Thin the Loren Forest well, since I still get grainy coverage even after thinning it considerable. It's a tricky colour to work with imho. Sorry for the late response, I wasn't expecting replies :biggrin.:

I replaced my pictures that photobucket nuked with new pictures. So were lost, but not too serious. I took advantage of the edits to make my initial post a bit prettier, so people wont have to scroll too much to look for anything worthwhile.

My initial force of 10 guys has expanded a bit, I have 21 painted guys so far and I have 6 more planned. Almost 30 men for a 10-man team demonstrates how much I can go off-track with my projects. Here's my latest addition to the force, an improvised Techpriest Enginseer:

gallery_92826_13460_153301.jpg

The remaining special operatives are already on their way, with 2 commissars (1 with bolt pistol & 1 with plasma pistol) and 3 Bullgryns/Ogryns, each with a different load-out. This should be fun!

3 new models for my Kill Team, we'll start of with the Special Operative. Since I already used the Scions as my regulars, I had to give this guy a Volley gun and some grenades to make him easily recognisable.

gallery_92826_13460_68904.jpg

Next up are the heavy guys. I keep forgetting if they are Ogryns or Bullgryns (or both), but here are 2 of the 3 planned guys, since the rulebook gives the option to run possible 3 variants.

One guy remaining for a complete kill team!

Nice combination of colours. :smile.::thumbsup:

Thanks!

Smashing paint job! Get any battles in yet?

Krash

Thanks! Got a few already against DE, Orks and Guard. I lost most of them when my opponents got into melee. Orks are damn brutal up close.

The Ogryns look great.

Thanks, they were a joy to paint.

That tech priest is awesome , and the colors are striking great choice. Welcome to the guard, and you can never have enough guardsmen.

Thank you, that priest is my favorite dude so far. I kinda regret going for green armour-scheme after painting him.

I planned to stop after my kill team, but I managed to grab a Sentinel from a friend. More guardmen is always a possibility then :ph34r.:
