Anyone used Vallejo Game Color washes?

The VGC line is a copy of the old GW line and while I have heard that there is nothing as good as the old GW washes, are the Vallejo washes worth getting?

I've used the grey and brown, the former is pretty much the only useful wash for shading white I've found.

They do flow a little differently to old GW washes as they're a little thicker straight out of the bottle. but you can get them to behave that way with enough thinning

For washes close to the old GW ones you're better off sourcing Army Painter stuff. Dark Tone is basically Badab Black in a dropper bottle.

I use some Vallejo inks.  I have no problems with them, but there's nothing particularly amazing about them either, like they don't have anything I'd go out of my way to get such as Agrax Earthshade/Devlan Mud or Nihilakh Oxide.  To contrast, I've completely switched over to Vallejo paints because I prefer them over GW's now, but am indifferent to their inks.

I haven't found any washes as easy to use as Citadel or Army Painter so far. Don't like Vallejo washes or using inks that require thinning and de-glossing.

N1SB, inks are a whole other story from the VGC washes. As for the Army Painter stuff, I've read mixed things: some people swear they're just as good as Devlan Mud and Badab Black ever were, and others say they dry chalky and weird.

In about 4 years of using them the only mishaps I've had with AP washes is glossier finish than I was after if they've been left to sit for a while and not been shaken thoroughly enough before use.

I have some P3 ones I prefer, and my faves are actually the current line of GW (gloss and non gloss, inks and washes... I really find use for all of them). But I agree with Sock above.

 

The 2-3 Vallejo's I have are just too heavy for my liking. The only thing I can imagine is diluting the heck out of them. I love a lot of the Vallejo line up and use a lot of it so it's not a brand name problem. I'm just not a fan of their inks/washes.

I only use VGC Grey wash on white for the corners.  It's very subtle though; lighter than Agrax and isn't "brown".  That may seem obvious, but is the reason why I don't use Agrax on white.  That's my only experience outside of the GW stuff.

I dont use the game color washes but i do use the model color washes and they seem to work nicely to me, they dry very matt.

BCK, I used the Grey Wash for my Angels Encarmine Death Company and I find that it works best when I add a drop or two of flow improver to it.

Someone had mentioned a new "game store" in my area recently and when I went looking for some new paint to replace my OOP GW colors for my Astral Claws, I stopped in at the place and was surprised to find they had the full range of Vallejo Game Color paints including VGC Air and the washes. For those in the Austin area, Emerald Tavern Games and Café is about the only physical location I know of that carries the Game Color line.

 

So anyway, I picked up some VGC Black Wash and also a bottle of Army Painter Dark Tone and will experiment with them to see which one comes out on top.

I love the Vallejo washes, inks and whole range.

 

For me, I add a drop of Vallejo matte varnish into the ink washes, just to aid flow a bit and to make it less shiney too!

I like Vallejo's products a lot, but have yet to try their washes. I'd be interested to know how you get on with these, and how they compare to the AP and GW ones. :)

VGC washes are meant for military modellers, so they're really a pin wash for panel lines.

 

The washes we know and love are a hybrid between a wash and a glaze.

If you are looking for the old GW colors I believe Coat De Arms (the people who originally manufactured them) are still around. Might be hard to track down a set in the states. Scale creep miniatures Was the only distributor in the USA, no idea if they are still imported.
