Building a 30k and 40k Army …

Hello Brotherhood of the Khan!

With more and more people playing 30k and the 8th Edition seems to make it easier, playing both, 30k and 40k I ask myself wether it's clever to choose one of the 18 Legions when starting a new Army (or the Hobby at all). Has any White Scars Player experiences with playing / mixing 30k and 40k?

Or put it the other way round: It seems to me, as it would be a great Idea to choose one of the 18 Legion (especially White Scars, of course), because it's open for 30k as well as for 40k and many Minis (not all of course) could be used in both. Or did I make a mistake here?

At Least that would be a good use for the ugly 30 Iron Warriors, I bought with "Burning of Prospero": Together with the Mark II Upgrade Heads from Forge World they would look really nice.

Sidenote: I just noted, that Forgeworld themselves doens't care too much for the fluff, as they offert the Mark II Upgrade Kit for the White Scars together with Battle of Calth, which contains Mark IV Armours …

Thanks for the Help in Advance!

Ah and by the way: Is painting white Power Armour really that much more difficult than the colour schemes with black base colour?

This is exactly what I'm doing. A 30k White Scars army that also works in 8th, with some shuffling around of models.

I'll be using the Ravenwing rules for now until White Scars get some more in 8t. My plan is to use Scimitars (30k Skyhunters) to represent my Keshig bodyguard (Ravenwing Knights), and Outriders/Bikes for my normal bikers.

My commander will use Sammaels rules in 8th, and ofc will be Jetbike mounted in 30k.

Th n just add to taste...couple of 30k armoured tactical squads, and probably a land raider full of Cataphractii "just because".

As for painting white, it's not so bad. Best recipe I have found is white base, then 2 thin coats of ulthuan grey. Wash the model, then touch back up with Ulthuan Grey, then highlight white. Done.

Should work other black base, but might need to work a bit harder to cover it.

Ah. Look! Thanks! I wouldn't have come up with the Idea to use the Ravenwing-Rules for White Scars in 8th. But that's one of the nice things, of having all Astartes in one Index … :biggrin.:

I already built two test White Scars and start testpainting them white soon. :happy.:

The idea just popped into my head when I realised "hey....jet bike....". After poking at it a bit it seems like they will work quite well for Scars for the time being.

Same would the Eeathwing actually...their options fit 30k Terminator options a lot better too.

Okay so you pretty much mimic what I am doing with my White Scars.

I have designed the list from the ground up to be 8th edition compatible (I owned them for a while in 7th) while also making them and leaving them to be 100% horus heresy useable.

I am doing Brotherhood of the Mountain which is the White Scars Tank company, less bikes but more Cossack in style, lots of mounted infantry with bikes around protecting the tanks.

Its fairly easy as all of the Power-Glaives we use in horus heresy can easily be counted as Power Axes within 8th. (That is a close approximation of what they were used for historically anywho)

Bikes are easy; bikes are bikes.  and all infantry are just...hey...marine infantry! easy standard.

As for jetbikes; I personally *HATE* the attack bike models with a fiery burning passion, most idiotic model in the GW modern day lineup.  And as such I use jetbikes with heavy bolters and multi meltas as Attack bikes within squads. I just make sure to note that the unit does not (obviously) count as "flying" in 8th edition.

And obviously someday when the Horus Heresy update for 8th arrives and the games are cross compatible again I can of course make it easily workable
