Help Identifying a Colour

Recommended Posts

What current Citadel Paints would you use to achieve the yellow/tan colour on the Chimerae in this picture?

Is there anything similar? Tallarn sand doesn't look as yellow.

Citadel Paint recommendations only please. Thanks!

Averland Sunset or Zamesi Desert, shaded with Seraphim Sepia and then drybrushed with Karak Stone or Ushtabi Bone, mebee. Might even be Averland to give it the mustard-y base, with Zamesi layered over it, then shaded, then drybrushed.

There's no one way of painting Chimera in that picture.

Averland sunset spray with ushabti bone edge highlights will get pretty close to the wrecked turretless one on the left.

Second from left would be very hard to get right.

One on the middle back is close to zandri dust spray with some ushabti bone layering.

Front middle one should be doable with washes. The one on the front right would need slightly different washes.

Ah, the Massacre at Big Toof River.

That takes me back, I painted some of the Orks on that board - but tbh, I think everyone that frequented a GW store in 1997 ended up painting some Orks for it

More pics here, it was an amazing display - http://www.sodemons.com/gwmuseum/orksdrift/orksdrift.htm

No idea on the colours used, sorry biggrin.png

The only thing I can say is Big Toof river was painted back in the late 90s - so the current paint range didn't exist back then, unless you have a big stock of the old paints I'd look to re-produce it using 'in production' paints, rather than attempt to re-produce it exactly.

Personally I'd suggest looking a Vallejo, the finishes on those paints I find better for desert effects and they do all the historical colours from North Africa WW2 and Desert storm. My sugestion would be Iraqi sand with dark sand highights, maybe over a base of yellow ochre if you want a richer colour. (I'm currently experimenting with Flames of Wars new edition while I wait for 8th ed to land, so I have historical desert colours on the brain.)

Thanks brothers.

Yeah, I realize I won't be able to completely duplicate it as those were painted with the really old paints ... but I want to get as close an approximation as I can with the current Citadel paints. I prefer to stick to Citadel simply because it's what I know and have lots of experience with those paints.

Thanks for the suggestions. Averland sunset comes in a spray, so I might try that and hit it with some Reikland flesh shade to tone it down a bit. Or Zamesi ... I have a pot of Averland Sunset I think so I'll test it out on some unused bit of hull and see how it looks.

SAME QUESTION FOR THE BASES OF THE PRAETORIANS IN THE PIC: The tops are easy, that looks like straight-up Armageddon Dust dry-brushed with Tyrant Skull and some Mordheim Turf. But what about the sides of the bases? Again, it's kind of a mustardy beige. Definitely not the typical Steel Legion Drab. Zamesi Desert?

Thanks again!

I would look beyond Citadel paints and investigate for example Model Colour or maybe Tamiya, they do have a lot of different colours to choose from. If you don't have a airbrush, Tamiya has most of their colours as a spray-can version to.

Pick up a few different paints that you like and let the test painting commence! Preferably you test on something else than the chimeras smile.png

Anyway, the Massacer at Big Toof River (or whatever it was called!), man.. what a battle. I remember reading about it in WD's back in the days and staring at the pretty pictures hehe. Did fuel my love for both orks, imps and desert worlds! Thank you for the link to the pictures, Jazzman! biggrin.png

Cheers!

Guys, I realize folks are trying to be helpful offer alternate ranges, but if someone says "I want to stick to Citadel colors" or "I want to stick to P3" or "I want to stick to Range X", then offering other lines' colors really doesn't help out.

There's a variety of colours in that picture, all from a defunct range.

If you absolutely must stick to current Citadel paints, then the best advice I can give you is to paint some swatches from good colour candidates on a small strip of white card and hold them up to the picture on your monitor when dry.

From what I remember, the older colours used were Bronzed Flesh, Bubonic Brown, Vomit Brown, and Leprous Brown for the base colours, and then Bleached Bone drybrushed highlights. Bronzed Flesh was a commonly used colour back then for these yellow desert colours, and you can see a much more worked-up version on the Ogryn's flesh in the same pic.

The closest colours that are widely-available today are Vallejo Game Colour, which are lovely paints albeit not Citadel. If you fancy giving them a go anyway (they are pretty cheap and easy to find), the (official) equivalents are:

Bronzed Flesh = VGC Sunny Skintone

Bubonic Brown = VGC Plague Brown

Vomit Brown = VGC Filthy Brown

Leprous Brown = VGC Scrofulous Brown

Bleached Bone = VGC Bone White

Failing that, Coat D'Arms is a range of paints that's the old Citadel range re-badged. Otherwise, they are the exact same paints, made by the exact same company, and usually feature the exact same names too. Getting them in Canada might be tricky (as they are UK-based), but plenty of Canadians on other forums swear by them so I presume they can't be impossible to get hold of.

Finally, it's worth mentioning that the P3 paints are all basically old Citadel too; the range was designed for Privateer Press by Mike McVey (former head of the GW 'Eavy Metal studio), and he commissioned them from Citadel's paint manufacturer in the UK because he already knew them. Many of the P3 colours are therefore (unsurprisingly) close matches to old Citadel colours. As I expect P3 is easily available in Canada, I'd suggest they are worth considering too. They are a little different in texture and finish to the current Citadel paints, but they are lovely to work with and are probably my favourite range.
