Halzet's Blood Angels Successor - WIP

Hi everyone,

I've recently returned to the hobby since leaving at the end of 2nd edition and have decided to return to my army from back then, well, one of their successors this time. smile.png

So, at the same time as putting all the models together and painting them, I'm working on putting together information about the chapter itself and its history because I love coming up with stories! I'm just terrible at deciding on names as will be apparent!

So, this thread is to serve as a scratchpad to hopefully bounce ideas off a few of you, a WIP log of the painting and modelling and probably more than a few thoughts and musings. Once enough is painted and 8th is released, I'll also add battle reports and their associated stories.

Today will be background and what I've come up with the chapter so far. Tomorrow I'll aim to get some pictures of what I've been working on & painting.

Not fully settled on a chapter name so far - Angels Valiant is the closest thing I've been happy-ish with but I'm sure there is better. But so that my posts read sensibly and to avoid referring to the chapter as 'this chapter', I'll refer to the chapter as the Angels Valiant until I settle on something better. smile.png

It's not going to be in any order at the moment - just in the sequence my thought put them in. Once everything is firmed up and names sorted, I'll put it into the

I'll use <insert name here> or something to indicate where I'm still working on names - but would like people's thoughts on the whole thing before deciding all the names. It has been ages since I've been heavily involved with the fluff - so it's possible something I put conflicts with the established story.

History:

Part of the 23rd Founding, the Angels Valiant were sent towards a sector near the Pelegron Cluster where a warp storm had abated, releasing the worlds within and their human inhabitants, as well as an Waaaagh <Ork Warboss Name> that had been trapped whilst the warp storm raged for several millennia. As part of a wider force consisting of a couple of other newly founded Space Marine chapters, the Imperial Navy and several regiments of the Imperial Guard, the Angels Valiant helped crush the Waaagh before it managed to spread too far, but not before several of the worlds had been subject to exterminatus to remove the xenos from their surface. Chapter Master <insert name here> of the Angels Valiant dispatched <Ork Warboss> himself in an assault on the space hulk <insert name> that the Orks were using as a flagship.

As a reward, the Angels Valiant were granted the inhabited world of <home world name> to establish their home world and a permanent fortress monastery. A planet that Sanguinius himself had stepped foot upon back during the Great Crusade.

Home World:

The home world is dominated by 2 large continents, covered in the scars of conflict where the inhabitants had running conflicts with Ork Freeks during their several millennia of isolation. The inhabitants having pulled back to huge walled cities, using huge armored transports the size of sky-scrapers to transport goods and people between the cities and a mobile, mechanized forces to strike anywhere that the Orks were building forces to keep them off-balance and in not enough numbers to over-run any of the fortress cities. Despite this, there are a number of ruins where Orks overran the defenses, laying waste to everything within, as well as wrecks of transports that never made it to their destination dotting the landscape, exposed reactors and spilled chemicals making the surrounding areas un-liveable and dangerous to most living creatures.

The inhabitants themselves worship the Emperor as the God of Mankind, but ever since Sanguinius set foot upon the world back during the Great Crusades, he has been worshipped as something greater. After all, the Emperor was but human and far away, whilst the Angel was near and visibly greater than any man.

The military of their home world, as well as the worship of Sanguinius has formed how the Angels Valiant operate over the years since they established their fortress monastery. Driving a pride in their gene-line and refusing to do anything less than their Primarch would have done. Several times since their founding, an entire company has been almost wiped out as they voluntarily threw themselves into the jaws of the enemy to buy more time for imperial citizens to escape or to expose a weakness in enemy lines where there was none before. Each time this has happened they have caused enough damage that shortly afterwards, reinforcements were able to push the foe back so that any survivors, fallen marines and their equipment could be recovered.

Chapter Details:

The Angels Valiant go to war as a purely mechanized assault force, every marine in a Rhino, Razorback or Landraider. Often forming an armored spearhead to drive a wedge through enemy forces, dismounting at close range and getting stuck in with Bolter and Chainsword. They avoid the use of drop pods and only the most venerable and honored are permitted to descend from up-high as Sanguinius would have done, veterans and sanguinary guard being the only ones to use jump packs and traveling in Stormravens alongside the chapter's few Dreadnoughts.

(This will drive a few limitations in my army - every squad/character needs a transport. No jump packs/dreadnoughts unless on a Stormraven - unless things change with 8th and what can go in what transports.)

The Angels Valiant don't have dedicated Veteran and Scout companies, each Veteran remaining within their company. The companies take it in turns to return to their fortress monastery taking the time to re-arm and recruit, with the company stationed at the fortress monastery being responsible for the training of any recruits and accepting those that are ready into the ranks of that company as scouts.

Recruitment itself involves leaving one of the walled cities and making their way to the gates of the Fortress monastery, on foot. There is no set time for this to occur, the Angels Valiant attempting to induct anyone that arrives at their gates. Each city records those that attempt the trip and are marked as deceased, as even if they survive the trial, they will no longer be human.

The Angels Valiant have also believe that Sanguinius isn't dead, instead think that Sanguinius' soul was pulled into the warp by the Chaos gods when his body was slain by Horus and that the visions are brought about by a psychic echo of the Chaos gods trying to break Sanguinius' soul and turn him to Chaos. As such, they record everything that those that have fallen to the Black Rage or gone mad with the Red Thirst, in the hope that the ravings of those so affected might shed some light on how to rescue Sanguinius' spirit.

Chapter color scheme:

Red and Bone is what I've settled for so far. With blue eyes/embellishments. Was originally going to be yellow, but that doesn't work well with the bone color.

sm.php?b62c=@hIAEG_iaj2F.haLvy_@@@@@_hkcJO_.@@_____@_@@@_@@_@_@@@@@@@@@@@..@@_@@____@@_@.iakk7&

Not decided on a chapter badge yet – using the Blood Angels minis, so been using the Blood Angel chapter symbol but in bone with a blue teardrop until I decide on something better.

Now, it’s getting late, so I need to sleep ! Tomorrow should be WIP modelling and painting…

When you're ready, consider adding your Successor to this please. We have quite the varied selection of Successor Chapters and it's good to see them all in one place.

You're certainly off to a good start so far. Have you decided on the style of warfare your army will use and are you building towards this style or just collecting whatever to have a large pool to chose from? For example, I want to be able to experience everything with my BA army so my collection has grown spontaneously* to enable me to field a full Death Company force one day, an armoured column the next, various hybrid forces and so on.

* Recommended for those mad few like myself. Seriously, get a plan and build towards it - it's cheaper!

Looking good. A cool story too - some similarities but also key difference to my own chapter, the Sanguine Vision. If they met it would surely be some interesting discussion! Most interesting is we're from the same founding and started careers with Ork clean-up :D

Jolemai just beat me to advertising the slate - but be sure to get them recorded in there once this is complete and have one of your brother immortalized in the eventual* artwork that will be done!

*no guarantee on it being soon. Need more chapters!

I like the Chapter fluff. Good colour scheme too! Personally never tried mech lists so no idea how it would work but the fluff would translate well into a play style if that's the way you choose to go.

Will definitely add them to the slate once complete - but that might be a while. I find it difficult to say 'this is finished' and constantly have more questions to expand upon, e.t.c.

So for example, one of the bits I'm brainstorming on is why does the home world hold Sanguinius in higher regard than the Emperor? Could leave at 'because I want them to' but I find answering questions about the home world & Chapter can quite easily help give it more depth. So, one train of thought is that Sanguinius released their ancestors from from Slavery - who were they enslaved by? Other human? Xenos? Needs to be powerful enough for a Primarch to intercede personally. How did they control the humans? Why did the xenos need the workforce? Any remains of xenos technology or architecture on planet? - If yes, could lead to Adeptus Mechanicus outpost and allow for collecting them as an allied detachment.

As for models - my collecting, and the fluff originally started with 'I want to drop off a land raider full of death company and assault terminators in the middle of the enemy because it would be 'fun'' and went from there. This was before 8th was announced, so I was fully prepared to lose constantly, but those few times it worked? Probably worth it.

I've also got a plan of what I'm building towards and the fluff is giving me limitations - but my end goal is, if I ever field my entire collection, everything must fit within the limitations of the chapter. So the force must be entirely mechanized with Stormravens carrying the Dreadnoughts & Sanguinary guard. The infantry force will primarily be short ranged & melee focused, leaving the long range firepower to the vehicles.

Charlo - Sentinel Founding is evidently the best. smile.png I think the Orks are probably sommething easy-ish to get a chapter started from. I knew I wanted a xenos threat that pretty much infested a world and could grow to be a wider threat, giving a reason for forces to be sent to deal with it. So the nids were the main other option - but I couldn't see anyone being stuck on a world with a tyranid infestation for too long without being a meal. smile.png

Anyway, onto modelling and painting! A day late but oh well.

The tactical squad I am currently working on, or at least 9 of them.

http://i455.photobucket.com/albums/qq276/halzet/AV-Tac1.png

These have taken a while as they are the first miniatures I have painted in years! Still need a few bits and pieces tidied up and finished, and I haven't managed to get the paint as smooth as I would have liked. But it's all a learning experience at the moment. Also thinking the gun casings and cloth needs to be a different color, just not sure what at the moment. Any suggestions? Maybe grey? They currently merge too much with the bone color on the rest of the miniature for my liking.

Plus, didn't drill the bolters. :( But that just means they make more effective clubs.

Unfortunately I had a bit of a nightmare with some Mephiston red spray, so a lot of my models had to go for a bath in Dettol. Plus, nowhere near the same red as the paint in the pot! So whilst almost everything is assembled, not everything is primed yet.

My short term objective is to get enough painted to play the patrol level games, so 11 tactical marines, 1 librarian + probably 2 razorbacks (which I don't have yet.) Then get the rest painted & assembled to add onto that base.

Current state of my collection is:

Complete: None :(

Being painted: 9 Tactical marines, 1 Rhino

Primed: 8 Death Company, 1 Terminator Captain, 3 Assault Terminators, 1 Command Squad Veteran, 1 Librarian

Assembled: 11 Tactical marines, 2 Assault Terminators, 2 Command Squad Veterans, 1 Company Champion, 1 Sanguinary Novitiate

Being Assembled: 1 Captain, 1 Baal Predator (my first ever magnetized model!)

To be Assembled: 1 Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer

Any chance of a close up on one of the Marines? Also, what's your white recipe?

I use bone for my cloth (and parchment) so maybe that would work? Alternatives are gold and believe it or not, purple (Appiah5's TDA Captain from last year's ETL is a good example).

Fluffwise, Xenos could work well and would also potentially allow for an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor and/or Deathwatch allies. There's also known fluff whereby we see the Emperor as a man and hold Sanguinius in the same regard, so there's no reason why our Primarch couldn't be at the forefront - just not when the High Lords of Terra are looking this way, obviously.

As for your initial tactic, if you like it, do it and report back :) Better yet, when the Thunderhawk Transporter gets re-released, you can literally do what you envisioned ;)

It's all Ushbati bone. No white in there at the moment.

I need a much better light for photos, but here are a few more. Will try and get some with daylight tomorrow...

So, I'm finding that having this thread is pushing me to paint more..so been a bit busy since last week.

I've gotten to the point where I think I've finished the first 9 tactical marines to an acceptable standard (apart from the Sergeant's standard.) So I'll be putting them aside to avoid the temptation to keep re-doing bits and pieces. Changed the color of the cloth and parchment to white, which differs it from the armor trim better. I have gone for purple purity seals as the red was disappearing into the rest of the armor too much.

http://i455.photobucket.com/albums/qq276/halzet/20170522-002.jpg

I am quite happy with how the sergeant's power sword turned out. I knew I didn't want them to be blue and have been thinking black with red might work quite well.

http://i455.photobucket.com/albums/qq276/halzet/20170522-004.jpg

I've also made a start on the Librarian (and the next 2 tactical marines) to work towards my current goal. The white on the robe needs a bit more touching up, but other than that, I think he's coming along nicely for my current painting skills.

I'm going to be away for this weekend, so won't be able to get too much painting done. But I want to get the Librarian and other two tactical marines to a finished state. Depending on how well the painting goes, that might be before the weekend. Once complete, it'll be onto tanks! (2 x Razorbacks for transport and the Baal Predator for Heavy support.)

I think this weekend I'll also take my notepad and work on the chapter badge and see if I can come up with a better name, or at least a long list of words from which I can work from.

Anyway, any feedback & tips are appreciated!

I suspect that's referring to the tactical marines?

I had used a mephiston red spray on them. First one went okay-ish, but the rest came came out a bit thick/grainy. I put most of the models I had sprayed in a tub to strip the paint, but couldn't fit them all in and if I stripped them all, I'd never get around to painting things! So I went ahead with a few models whilst the rest get their paint removed so that I could at least start playing once 8th comes out. At some point in the future it's likely these will get stripped and re-done. But I think I'll avoid the Mephiston red spray as I don't trust it and it comes out lighter than the paint pot anyway. sad.png

Might try the Dragon Red Primer from Army Painter at some point and see how that goes...

Edit: If it's on the Librarian, let me know where it shows and I'll keep it in mind for next time. I've had to do a few layers of each of the colors. But might have rushed things a bit as it got later and later last night.

I use the dragon red army painter for priming.  Are you spraying outside on windy day?  That will leave your primer result grainy and globby.

Also, i don't recommend going through the trouble of stripping old models and repainting them.  Better to just get some new stuff and paint it.

Librarian:

-all the long-horned skulls look caked up to me.

-his rear 'loincloth'

-his vox grill

-the keys hanging from his waist

-the brown shaft of his staff (that sounded very dirty)

But overall, yeah, in general it looks to me like the paint isn't being thinned out enough.

Stripping is fine if the paint on it is not super thick or some weird brand. Usually letting soak in bio ethanol for a few minutes and then giving it a brush with an old toothbrush does the trick.

Barely any effort at all.

  • 3 weeks later...

Stripping would pretty much be a few years away - at best and if I could be bothered. smile.png Not going to be doing it anything like that anytime soon. smile.png

Anyway, a few updates. It's been a bit longer than I intended and my painting is behind my self-imposed schedule, but unfortunately I have yet to win the lottery so working to pay bills comes before everything else.

Been working on painting things, fluff and names...even brought myself a notepad so I can make notes as & when I think of things!!!

First up, the painting and modelling...

I think some of what appeared to be too thick could have been lighting & angle combined with no color variation on things. The rear loincloth does have brush marks in it - I suspect I just got lazy and decided to rush instead of putting thin coats over it...

So, presenting Brother Librarian Sephrys (Because I will eventually have to have names for everything!!!)

http://i455.photobucket.com/albums/qq276/halzet/20170613_LibrarianFront_2.jpg

http://i455.photobucket.com/albums/qq276/halzet/20170613_LibrarianRear_1.jpg

and alongside what I have been working on that will be the foundation of this army...

http://i455.photobucket.com/albums/qq276/halzet/20170613_Army_1.jpg

The Rhino will actually be a Razorback (got 2 of them being delivered tomorrow) and the Baal Predator is my first magnetized model and does have sponsons assembled and primed..

This means my initial force will be:

Librarian

5 Tactical Marines

6 Tactical Marines

Razorback

Razorback

Baal Predator

Think that comes up to approx. 700 points in 8th, will then complete the Rhino and stuff that with bodies (maybe Death Company???) because I'll need more warm bodies to throw at things. Aiming for about 1k points at first, but will double check everything this Saturday.

Then I can look at expanding and improving my options from there, and working on things I need to improve technique-wise, so magnetizing special weapons and heavy weapons, and improving on how I base the models as just a few things to start with.

Also, got the Dragon Red primer being delivered tomorrow - so will see how that turns out! Oh, and a box of Devastators so I have more heavy weapon options than Heavy Bolter and Heavy Flamer...

Fluff - not going to be able to get through everything I've been thinking about over the past few weeks tonight. Will follow up with more tomorrow. Most of it will be dumps of my notes and my thoughts, mainly due to if I try and write everything out properly, I would be here typing all night!

Currently thinking that when originally founded as a fleet based chapter, they specialized in boarding actions and had a more generic name but once finding out their gene-lineage and settling on a home world, they changed their name to fit more.

Still playing around with names, listing anything Angelic, Knightly or related to the Blood Angels that I like the sound of. So currently got; Angels, Choir, Winged, Heralds, Shroud, Serapim, Knights, Paladin, Templar, Cavalier, Stalwart, Crimson, Red, Sanguine, Blood...

Now thinking along the lines of 'Paladins of...' it has a more religious tone to it than Knight whilst missing the whole Templar crusading side of things. Maybe Paladins of the Crimson Angel might work??? Thoughts and ideas are more than welcome.

Also, searching on the internet for Paladin and came across the twelve peers, who were the foremost warriors of Charlemagne's court. Which gives me ideas for chapter structure. Maybe 12 companies each with 12 squads - very few of the squads are a full 10 marines. Most are 5 or 6, to fit in Razorbacks. Maybe only the squads containing newly promoted scouts are a full 10 marines. So a full company is somewhere between 80 and 90 marines (excluding the death company) and keeps the chapter, when at full strength, at around 1,000 marines. (A Blood Angel successor at full strength? Never going to happen.) Just need to work on an in-setting reason for this. Something from when the homeworld was cut-off in the warp storm, possibly the number of normal human champions that broke a siege of one of their cities by slaying an Ork warboss in combat? Very unlikely to happen and would be something memorable if it ever did.

Whilst revering Sanguinius 'just because' is a possibility, I've been digging into some of the WH40k fluff because I'd like for a firm reason for it and have come across the Khrave - psychic xenos with a penchant of enslaving planets and where the larger ones can give a Primarch a run for their money? (Not ours of course, just the others. ;) An angel descending from the heavens and casting down the xenos overlords, freeing the psychically enslaved population sounds almost perfect for my requirements and fits very much with how I think the chapter would behave. It only gets reinforced by Sanguinius' later actions and his sacrifice.

Maybe even a first hand account of Sanguinius fighting the largest of the Khrave could form the basis of any scripture or something...

The possible xenos artifacts left over from this period gives room for Adeptus Mechanicus/Ordo Xenos inquisitors. I am definitely liking the suggestion of an Ordo Xenos inquisitor or two being around, with kill-teams from the chapter supporting the inquisitor in hunting out alien cults after the rift has split the imperium in two and leading up to the timeline for 8th edition. Will need to find ideas for an Ordo Xenos inquisitor model for when I get around to adding them in.

This is really cool! Personally (if this was what you were thinking?) i like the idea that squads don't receive any new recruits. So scouts start at 10 and by the time they reach the battle company they've potentially lost 4-5 of their battle brothers along the way. Think its an idea you could work with, potentially explaining why elite squads are considerably smaller than other units. Plus it would ensure that your squads are close knit groups and know their exact roles and duties when in combat with each other, due to having fought together their entire career.

Thanks for the compliments. :)  I'm always nervous showing off stuff I'm working on, but I'm also my own biggest critic. :D

@DeathCompanyDante - not quite what I was thinking, though that is a neat idea. Could potentially end up having lots of bits of squads, so would be a nightmare with sticking to the codex organisation. Story-wise is interesting as characters could hate enemies that wiped out brothers that he had fought with for centuries. Extensive combat action could cause problems though as you might end up with lots of squads of 1 marine remaining which would need organizing somehow. There's also the issue that any mistakes/misunderstandings would be reinforced and not fixed, as a squad that has spent their entire time together only has a limited pool of experience to draw from as none of them would know better. I'll have a think and see what I can come up with.

My original plan was to have several steps as such.

New initiate joins the scout squad and works their way through, learning the details of warfare. These would probably be 5 man squads as you wouldn't want all of the fresh blood into the company to get wiped out because someone sneezed whilst sneaking through an Ork camp. Not fully decided on the size of the squad though, depends on if we get transports for them.

When they get their full power armor, they become part of a full strength squad of 10 marines in a Rhino. This gives them more support whilst getting experience, as they have 9 brothers to watch their back and to support them in the field of battle and to cover for any mistakes they make.

Once they've worked through the positions in the full strength squad, taking on the heavy weapons and special weapons training, e.t.c. They join one of the smaller squads which are 5-6 marines in a Razorback. These are typically more specialized and don't have the manpower to watch over a new marine, so need more experience before they can be joined as any mistakes made by a marine in a squad of 5-6 is more likely to mean the rest of the squad gets injured or killed.

Infact - writing this, have just had an idea. Instead of having a full squad of 10 stay together, just have 4. Start off in a scout squad with 1 squad leader and 1 group of 4. That group of 4 then proceeds to full marine status, joining a 10 man tactical squad of 1 squad leader, 1 assistant squad leader and 2 groups of 4. Eventually working to one of the razorback squads with a squad leader (and maybe assistant squad leader) and 1 group of 4 again.

The squad leaders and assistant squad leaders would be the most experienced marines that are in-line for potential command and are building up their leadership/tactics skills.

In the full strength squads of 10 marines, the first group of 4 would be more experienced - maybe having done a few campaigns as one of the 'razorback' squads, so they are experienced at operating as a smaller team. The second group of 4 would be quite fresh having just been promoted from the scouts.

This would help spread the experience around. Still going to have holes where half of each 'group' has been wiped out - what to do with the 2 left over? Form ad-hoc squads probably?

In other news - I completely failed at trying to magnetize a razorback heavy bolter turret. It looks a bit drunk. Might be useful against the hordes as it's now shooting in two different directions? :) Did so badly at it, that i gave up and just decided to glue my other razorback's turret together (and the assault cannon turret from my Redeemer that is still sitting in it's box.) But it now means I need to get several different turrets of each option...just need to find a way that's affordable.

With that failure in magnetizing am also thinking I'll need to bite the bullet and just build a model for each of the heavy weapons & special weapons I have available. But that means I'll need lots more Torso's and legs. :(
