Black Ghostly Phantomy help requested

Weird title, but I'm after something a bit like Diablo from Diablo 3 when (s)he takes you into the shadow realm

I've seen loads of ways of painting ghostly effects using light colours with a green wash, but I kinda want the negative of that.

I don't know if would translate to a model because the bits you'd normally highlight the most (feet, spikes, hands etc) are actually the darkest part.

 

Any help would be super.

 

It's for a potential daemon project - so if anyone can offer any ideas then any advice on what to do with weapons and armour would be great too. I want them to look as incorporeal as possible so I have no idea whether to paint metal bits metal or just have it as extensions of the flesh and so on.

I've been after a similar technique for a long time, but have yet to see it. Lots of people seem to advocate grays washed with many layers of nuln oil, but it still looks grey to me. I think someone did a decent Be'lakor, I'll see if I can find it. Blacks just don't show a lot of detail on minis, but that I'm convinced that can be used to great effect. Just don't know how... :P
