Replica's Build Log (Current: Ultramarine Tyrannic War Vets)

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I had decided to do a squad of Ultrasmurf Tyrannic War vets, with Cassius and present them all on a diorama base. I've picked up a box of the Tyrannic War vets, and a few of the Deathwatch Cassius models for converting. More on the project as a whole at a later date - this WIP is just for a conversion that I'm using as a test-bed for conversions, colour schemes, basing ideas etc. If he turns out alright, he may end up in the squad and on the dio.

Like the fluff, this guy will have a mixed set of armor, as parts are damaged and replaced. I've started out with a set of Mk III legs.

There will  be extensive weathering, and battle damage, but for  now they are clean:

Tyrannic war veterans huh. Nice idea.

I was looking at the data sheet for these guys and was thinking of doing a token unit or two led by a suitably named chaplain, 'Crassius Punn', for my Lamenters

I may well borrow (unashamedly steal) some of your ideas, so I'm looking forward to you project developing. Going by those nice pair of pins you've done it will be easy on the eyes.

Cheers

Haha, Crassius Punn, Love it! Looking forward to seeing those!!!

Alrighty, well my time is fairly limited  on weeknights, so I only finished his right arm, and made a start on some other bits.

I went for Mk3 for the right arm, not to match the legs, but because of the huge fore-arm plates. This thing  looks designed for Tyranid combat! His left arm is going to be bionic and wielding a chainsword, so naturally, this is his defense arm and its gonna have some damage!

Had a play with the generic "3D" style of paint chips/scratches. Not the best, but I dont hate the effect. I am likely going to try some other battle damage techniques, so if you are particular to a certain style im open to suggestion!

Fantastic work, that blue is gorgeous

Thanks mate! I'm enjoying this one, definitely one the best results I've had so far!

This is looking very nice mate, to be honest I thing the chipping effect works really well and I think you have got it spot on.

Cheers! I am always guilty of overdoing the battle damage, so im trying to keep it modest, but realistic.

Thanks for taking the time to have a look! I'll have a new update shortly :)

That blue is awesome, really looks like its catching the light. cant wait to see the finished product

Cheers! I probably should have gotten a pic of the model, so that you can see what it will eventually look like haha

Hello all,

Another update, I got a fair bit done last night. I finished the blue on the torso, shoulder pads and backpack. I may need to go back and smooth out some transitions, but im pleased with them at the moment.

The torso is from the Deathwatch box. I chose it because I love the high collar, but also the pouches on the front. It reminds me of special forces, which these guys are. The pouches and grenades on him are not from the Deathwatch box and I actually have no idea where they are from, but they looked alright so i went with it.

As the torso will be twisted on the legs, I've put the collar highlights in such a way as to line up with the highlights running up the legs.

Here is the backpack, fairly self explanatory. I went for an older looking backpack, but I didn't want to use a Mk3 or Mk4.

And finally, the shoulder pads. I used an Ultramarine pad from the upgrade kit, and one of the flared Mk3 pads. I will try to freehand the Tyrannic War Veterans symbol on this one. I also put on a shoulder shield, I just like the look of these.

Now I have to do the non-blue parts. This is by far the scariest part for me, cause I'm happy with the model so far, but could very easily screw it up with a stray brush stroke! I'll get into the non-blue parts tonight, and on the weekend so he should be complete by Sunday. Thats the plan at least!

Thanks for looking, and as always, C&C welcome!

Those look like the grenade/pouch combos from one of the Scout kits. Scout bikers maybe? I know the torsos in there don't have them molded on.

Looking good so far, it'll be interesting to see with the various spot and trim colors in there as well.

Yes! Scout bikers, I think you're right! Cheers!

I've made some progress this weekend. I'd hoped to be finished, but time was not on my side!

Here's the right shoulder pad, this one will have a freehand of the Tyrannic was vets symbol. I was gonna go with white trim, but decided gold might look cooler on this style of pad. Looked good in person, but looking at the photo, I think I'll need to smooth it out a little with some glazes.

Here's the torso. Got a little gold on there, and got the pouches and krak grenades done. Initially I'd thought to do the krak grenades red and the frag's green, but decided to go with NMM silver for the krak grenades and black for the frags. I wanted to keep the number of colors on the chest to a minimum and to avoid overly bright secondary colors.

Here's the backpack, perhaps the least interesting part of the model, but still an important component.

I decided to go with red for the bolt pistol. I wanted it to draw the eye, and to compliment the red of the gems and purity seals.

This guy has a bionic arm - a must for a Tyrannic war vet. This arm is from the SM captain box I think. The sword is from theMk3 box, I really liked the dual blade design. The sword is not finished yet, I intend to do some more weathering on it and the gray stripe is just there in preparation of adding a triple yellow stripe design.  I will also add a little blood splatter on it.

Well that about sums up my weekend. Don't have much more to do, but also don't have much time during the week so still may not get finished until next weekend.

Thanks for looking, and all comments and criticism is welcome!!

This is coming along great! Concerning this:

Now I have to do the non-blue parts. This is by far the scariest part for me, cause I'm happy with the model so far, but could very easily screw it up with a stray brush stroke!

You should seal your previous work with a durable gloss coat if you want to prevent accidents from screwing up an area you already put a lot of time and effort into; it's much easier to remove a stray brush stroke on top of that hard gloss than repainting something. A lot of pros do that very thing.

Thanks mate, good point! Does gloss vanish alter the colour though, and does adding a matte or satin over the top of gloss make it appear cloudy? Truthfully, I never use any sealer or varnish on my minis as they are never really handled - but it is something i will have to look into further.

I've never had an issue with varnish altering the colour and my marines are usually bright pink! Vallejo or humbrol are pretty good, allows for most errors to be wiped away with a bit of airbrush cleaner!!

I then use a satin finish to knock back the gloss. I'm a big fan of gloss wash or oil paint washes to really black line detailing, any wash overspill can similarly be washed away off the varnish!!

Oh nice, I have some liquitex and some Vallejo floating around, might have to give them a go, cheers!

Sorry for the  double post, but I'm calling this one done!

Finished up some of the detailing and gave him a little battle damage. I kept the battle damage to an absolute minimum,  as I'm  learning that there is such thing as too much!

I added a freehand version of the Tyrannic War vets symbol, which im fairly pleased with, so I think I'll repeat it on some of the other kit-bashed vets i do in the future.

That is lovely, mate. Great stuff!

What's next?

Thanks very much! Next up will be a BA Librarian, based on the Blood Ravens/Deathwatch Librarian

Absolutely stunning work! All the little details really tie the figure together, keep up the great work!

Thanks! Really appreciate it!

Really beautiful work, I hope we get to see more please! :smile.:

Cheers! Definitely, I'm not sure if i should just make this a work log, or make new threads for each mini?

really nice work... really like the stance, its like a tyranid is lurching at him

Cheers mate! Yes! I see what you mean, that was not totally intentional, but I put him in the diorama then thats exactly what he'll be doing!
