Micah's Imperium army for 8th

Recommended Posts

I'm building an Imperium army for 8th edition to play at my local hobby store. So far it consists of roughly half Astra Militarum and half converted Sisters of Battle, with some other supporting Imperial units. I have threads in both the Sisters of Battle forum and the Astra Militarum forum, and I figured it would go better here since it's one army.

So far I have the following models in possession or in the mail on their way to me:

  • Warzone Mutant Chronicles 2nd Edition box set: 80 WW2 inspired miniatures that will make about 62 standard guardsmen and 8 sergeants or platoon/company commanders with some converting.
  • 15 converted Sisters of Battle: I'm still working on these as the arms are too big, I have some replacements I will try. They will be equipped as Dominions with flamers and combi-flamer on the superior.
  • 10 converted Death Cult Assassins. Finished and painted.
  • 3 Immolators with Immolation Flamer. Rides for the dominions. Turrets are not glued, so can also be run as rhinos or other rhino chassis tanks.
  • 2 Whirlwind Scorpios tanks: proxy Exorcists. As above, turrets not glued and can be used as rhinos.
  • 2 Start Collecting Tempestus Scions boxes: I ordered one with the index, and someone else bought me one as a present. So 2 commisars, 2 Taurox Primes, and 4 squads of scions.
  • 3 boxes of Sisters of Silence (10 assembled as Vigilators with Executioner Great Blades, 5 mostly assembled but not finished. Flamer arms are going on the sisters of battle above.
  • Vindicare Assassin
  • Tycho and 5 original death metal death company. (Planning on running these as Tycho the Lost and 5 death company, but probably wont use them as they are elites and I have too many elites already)
  • And a bunch of bits from various projects including multiple heavy and special weapons.

I've got a lot of work ahead of me. So far I have the rhino chassis tanks and 1 taurox assembled. I've got a few models that I started converting; for example, using leftover statuesque female heads I converted one of the warzone sergeants into a company commander.

Originally I was looking at a 2000 point brigade that ran 3 company commanders, 4 infantry squads, 3 scion squads, 3 vigilator squads, Vindicare assassin, 3 dominion squads in immolators, 2 exorcists, and a heavy weapon squad with heavy bolters. This was before the surprise start collecting box arrived.

I'd really like to include all 7 vehicles just because I get a sense that vehicle saturation will help keep them alive and provide too many targets for the big guns, while infantry squads provide cheap bodies in my list. I'd also like to include all 20 scions. I'd consider only taking two squads of dominions to help save points but I'd need another fast attack choice to keep the brigade bonus.

I'll post pics late tonight of everything I have so far.

Got bored at work so I hammered out a new 2000 point list. Critique always welcome.

1997 points

Edit: My fast attack section is really expensive, but they are the only fast attack units I own. They come to 600 points with transports. The nice thing is that they will be able to get within immolation flamer range on turn 1. If they survive to turn 2 they will do 18D6

Edit 2: The idea for this is that the infantry squads, HQs, Heavy Support, Taurox's and Elites form a fire base. The Dominions get right in the enemies face turn 1, hopefully forcing them to choose between the Dominions or the fire base. Scions and Assassin can deep strike where and when needed, either to steel objectives or to assassinate juicy targets. The Vigilators stay near the infantry to form a counter charge unit.

Edit 3: My math was off by 99 points somewhere, so I had to make some changes. Should be good now at 1993 points.

Replacing the autocannons on the Taurox's with Hotshot Volleyguns, and upgrading the plasma scions to melta scions.

I Ordered 9 portable las cannons from Anvil Industries. I'm going to use them for heavy weapon teams. They come with 3 battery packs for each las cannon, so I'll have the second person on the base carrying the extra batteries for the cannon. Hence why two are on one base. I'll fluff it as an unaugmented man portable las cannon for a light infantry unit. I think they will look pretty cool as well.

I have a rules question. So for a battalion and brigade detachment it says "May include 1 for each other choice" regarding dedicated transports. It says nothing about which dedicated transport you bring. My interpretation is that RAW you can bring any dedicated transport from the faction. Thus, If I play with "Imperium" as my faction I can bring any "Imperium" keyword transport for one of my dedicated transports, even if I don't have any units it can transport due to the transports rules. I can field an army of entirely Astra Militarum and bring an immolator as a dedicated transport despite not having anything that can ride in the immolator. Is this a correct reading of the rules?

As to why I would want to do that, adding an immolator with immolation flamer for 103 points is kind of nice in a lower point game where I can't bring the dominions.

My company commander

She didn't have the faith to be a battle sister. She believed in things she could see. Her motivation is to bring death to the enemies of humanity. Her loyalty is to the men and women she commands. She leads from the front and has earned the respect of her soldiers.

The Sergent Major (company commander). He's been across the galaxy and back half a dozen times, he's brought death to every known Xenos race. His boots are older than most of the soldiers in the unit. While technically he doesn't outrank any of the platoon commanders, if they are smart they listen to him. His lasgun is an outdated model he was issued when he enlisted and he wouldn't trade it for one of those cursed newer models for any reason.

The respected commander (tempestor prime) of the 37th Scion Regiment. He has a reputation for bravery and ferocity in combat.

The lieutenant who has learned well enough to listen to the experienced NCOs. The grunts finally get him about trained right so he will probably get promoted and reassigned any time now.

The command group and all the models I finished tonight. 10 scions in total plus a Commisar and my officers.

I think I'll end up with 30 conscripts, 3 infantry squads, and 3 scion squads for my troop choices. The British looking dudes are my infantry guys and the German looking dudes will be my conscripts. Other idea was to use the British as Veterans and the Germans as Infantry, but I don't think I'll be bringing Veteran's often as there are too many other good elite choices I'll need to include.

Currently looking at a 2,000 point list. It's a Brigade detachment. I've got it divided into 4 sections that are related and will be doing things together.

Section 1:

  • Lord Commisar, Power Sword, Plasma Pistol
  • Ministorum Priest, Chainsword, laspistol
  • Platoon Commander, Bolt Pistol, Chainsword
  • Command Squad, Medikit, Heavy Flamer
  • Conscript squad, 30x conscripts.

30 conscripts that get extra attacks in close combat, can receive orders, and can only ever take 1 wound from battleshock. The medikit can revive one dead model per turn.

Section 2:

  • Company Commander, Powersword, Laspistol
  • Company Commander, Power Fist, Bolt Pistol
  • Heavy Weapon Squad, 3x Lascannons
  • Heavy Weapon Squad, 3x Lascannons
  • Heavy Weapon Squad, 3x Lascannons
  • Infantry Squad, flamer
  • Infantry Squad, flamer
  • Infantry Squad, flamer

This is the main body of my force. Flamers are for overwatching. Lascannon teams are the most efficient way to get lascannons in the Army.

Section 3:

  • Tempestor Prime, Command Rod, Power Sword
  • Tempestus Command Squad, 4x Plasma guns
  • Tempestus Scion Squad, 2x Meltaguns, plasma pistol
  • Tempestus Scion Squad, 2x Meltaguns, plasma pistol
  • Tempestus Scion Squad, 2x Meltaguns, plasma pistol
  • Taurox Prime, Taurox Gatling Cannon, 2x Hotshot Volley Guns
  • Taurox Prime, Taurox Gatling Cannon, 2x Hotshot Volley Guns

Taurox primes stay with the main body and provide fire support. Scions drop in and burn hard targets. Tempestor Prime gives rerolls to 1s for overcharge plasma guns on the command squad.

Section 4:

  • Dominion Squad, 4x flamers
  • Dominion Squad, 4x flamers
  • Dominion Squad, 4x flamers
  • Immolator with Immolation flamer
  • Immolator with Immolation flamer
  • Exorcist
  • Exorcist

The exorcists will stay with the fire base. 2 Dominion squads rush forward in immolators to cause havoc and/or secure objectives. Third dominion squad hangs out with the main body and hopefully burns heretics that try to charge. If an infantry or conscript squad gets charged, it can withdraw, and then hopefully the dominions will hit the assaulting unit with 4d6 autohits. My withdrawing infantry unit then gets the order to get back in the fight and shoot.

Valkyries are by far my favorite GW model. I've always wanted to paint one, but never gotten around to it because before now I never had enough guard to justify it. I made an offer on two of them on eBay today, and it was accepted, so I will have two to paint.

I plan on magnetizing the weapons for these and making extensive use of my airbrush for the painting as they will likely be centerpieces for my army. I will use these to transport my scions, as well as two Lord Commisars and two officers of the fleet. Each Valkyrie will have one officer of the fleet embarked to act as a combat controller. I think it's fluffy and I had an extra spot in each one. Lord Commisars add an extra plasma shot at close range and each has a power fist for close combat; they also help with increased leadership. The 20 scions include 4 plasma command squad scions, 1 tempestor prime with plasma pistol, and then three squads with dual meltaguns each.

I plan on priming the Valks grey with my airbrush, preshading, and generally following the Buypainted video on Youtube for the Valkyrie but probably with different colors. I'm thinking about adding nose art as well.

Did some base coating today. Primed black and white shot from above in an attempt at zenithal lighting. This is about 45 infantry, 10 scions, 10 sisters of silence with great blades, 10 dominions with flamers, and 1 taurox prime.

Ran out of black paint so I need to get some more to finish basecoating my exorcists and immolators.

GW emailed a shipping invoice for my start collecting scions box with index. Still haven't heard anything from anvil industries about my order with them, so my heavy weapons teams will have to wait a bit.

Lascannons arrived from Anvil. They are pretty. Also got my Valkyries in the mail. I've started assembling one, but had to pause and prime the interior pieces since they will be visible. Hopefully I'll get some more done on it tonight.
