Chainsword Cookie's Chaos

Recommended Posts

Hi, Chainsword Cookie here.

I have been lurking around the corner for some time until I have decided to join the fray and start anew with this new edition. Honestly I was unsure which force to pick and this is my first proper foray into the Warhammer 40k universe, but Chaos it is. Death to the False Emperor!

My hobby experience so far comes from reading the Black Library books, playing various GW skirmish games and from time to time playing a game with my friends armies. I think it is high time that I begin an army of my own. It is nigh impossible to resist to the lure of the new Warhammer 40k edition and the new Chaos models, it's influence is corrupting.

So here we go. I Chainsword Cookie, a newly minted Chaos Lord (and hopefully not a soon to be Chaos Spawn), shall build myself a new Chaos army.

I am counting on your help brothers, for a long and arduous road is ahead of me, but with you on my side Daemonhood beckons.

My plan is to paint the Death Guard models in the starter set and expand it with the new releases as they come. The owner of the store were I go for my Warhammer fix told me that there will be a campaign during this summer and we will get points for painted stuff so I will try my best to keep the pace.

Let's see how this project turns out. I am very eager to play as soon as possible with an army I can call my own.

See you soon...

Welcome!

Have you decided on a Warband/Legion yet?

Thank you.

I think that the safest way for me to build and paint an army is by following Duncan's guides on Youtube so Death Guard it is! I will use that color scheme and practice it on the models from the starter before I move to the more complex stuff.

Slow and steady, the Death Guard way...

Here we go with my first update.

http://shrani.si/f/11/ue/2myDgAyj/chainsword-cookie-chaos-.jpg

Lord of Contagion, Noxious Blightbringer and Malignant Plaguecaster assembled.

PS. The spikes on the frame holding the huge bell already drew blood. I was told this is auspicious.

Tomorrow is Plague Marine time and then basecoating. I have to wait till Saturday to get my Corax White spray to basecoat the Poxwalkers, so they will wait a little.

Depends; if you're like me and prefer some variety and "specialness" to your models then you'd probably want to wait for the interchangeable kits to come (whenever that may be). If you're not so fussy and/or fancy some conversion work another set would give you a solid core to a new army

Safe stuff to buy. More plague marines from the box. More pox walkers. Avoid buying stuff till a codex comes out, unless A you have a lot of funds[and even then It would be better to buy some more general stuff like spawn or rhinos] B you can buy them realy cheap[if it is cheap it doesn't matter].

First wave of reinforcements for the Death Guard.

http://shrani.si/f/1K/Ag/1bDxFhiG/chainsword-cookie-chaos-.jpg

I had them for cheap, since some of my friends had some old Chaos laying around. Namely, Daemon Prince of Nurgle, Helbrute, Soul Grinder and the old Plague Marines kit.

Congrats man! That Nurgle Daemon Prince model remains awesome!

Thank you sirs for your kind words!

Second wave of reinforcements. Start Collecting: Daemons of Nurgle and the one and only Typhus

I like the background of Calas Typhon now Typhus and I really wished to have a named character in my collection, so he made it into my shopping list. Considering that he augments the Poxwalkers he looks also a smart buy for my army, especially now that new Poxwalkers models were announced.

This week will still be an "assembling and basecoating" hobby week since I would like to assemble everything and play a game or two to get the feels for the army.

Hi, I apologize for not updating my thread with painted stuff but I bring good tidings. First battle of the 8th and a first major victory for my Death Guard!

I have played today a 1000 points game against my buddy who showed with Deathwing Terminators, two Deathwatch Kill Teams, a DA Tactical Squad, a DA Librarian and a Rhino.. The mission was Only War, there was only one objective and it was 6 points, the table was the Hammer and Anvil deployment.

My list was as follows:

- Lord of Contagion

- Noxious Blightbringer

- Malignant Plaguecaster

- 7 Plague Marines

- 2 squads of 10 Poxwalkers

- Foetid Bloat-Drone

- Helbrute

For a total of 991 points, Batallion Detachment, 3 CP + 1 CP because of the point difference between my army and that of the adversary.

First turn:

I move my Poxwalkers forward, cast Miasma of Pestilence on my most exposed Poxwalker unit (the one heading directly toward the objective), shoot the Plasma Gun and the Bolters on the DA demi-squad with the Missile Launcher killing one marine and shuffling my Bloat-Drone toward the shooty Kill Team.

My opponent uses most of his shooting, Deathwing included, to kill my 10 Poxwalkers which exposes my Blightbringer for a juicy Hunter-Killer missile which kills him since he was down to three wounds. I also block the Mind Worm power of the Librarian. He deploys his Deathwing on my leftmost flank facing gingerly my Plague Marines.

Second turn:

I move toward the objective with my remaining Poxwalkers and Plague Marines. The Helbrute moves into half range for his Multi-Melta and in Heavy Flamer range, my Bloat Drone goes to cause trouble for the DA demi-squad with the Sargeant. I deploy via Deep Strike my Lord of Contagion behind his shooty KT and DA tac-squad. I cast Plague Wind on the melee DW team which gets denied, but I successfully cast Miasma of Pestilence on my Plague Marines.

In the shooting phase my Helbrute vaporizes his Librarian and deep fries one Deathwatch Veteran. My Bloat-Drone kills three marines from the DA combat squad with the Sarge and my Plague Marines fail to kill anything.

In the charge phase my Lord of Contagion fails to charge but my Bloat-Drone makes it hale into the DW shooty Kill Team. My Helbrute makes it safe into the melee KT. The Bloat-Drone kills one marine and my Helbrute takes out the entire melee KT, suffering 9 wounds from the Thunder Hammer wielding Sergeant.

My opponent does little in his shooting phase since my exposed Plague Marines are kept safe by the blessing of Nurgle and the effects of the Miasma of Pestilence, some Poxwalkers die but they are there to soak shots. The DW fails to do a single wound against my Plague Marines who prance on top of the hill like the cool guys they are.

He charges then my Bloat Drone with his Deathwing Terminators and my Helbrute with his Rhino. The terminators score a single wound on the Drone, the Kill Team receives three dead marines in return and the Helbrute takes 6 wounds of the enemy Rhino.

Third turn:

My Poxwalkers advance toward the objective. My Plaguecaster fails to wound the terminators with the Plague Wind but manages to boost the Poxwalkers which I intended to charge into the DA Sergeant and his pal with the flamer. My Plague Marines kill these two marines, my Helbrute kills the Rhino and my Lord of Contagion barely makes a charge into the terminators after a CP spent for a reroll.

The nice bit is that as a Legendary Fighter warlord, my Lord of Contagion makes five attacks of which two explode into Death to the False Emperor. Three terminators die. The return is pitiful since the teminators manage to inflict one more wound on the Bloat Drone which proceeds to kill the remaining Deathwatch sergeant with the Xenophase sword.

Fourth turn:

I have won the game by playing slow and steady and above all safe. My Lord of Contagion kills the remaining terminators, my Helbrute prances around and my Poxwalkers capture the Inquisition cache with anti-xeno phages meant for a tailored virus bomb.

http://shrani.si/f/1u/AW/4sDY9aZA/chainsword-cookie-chaos-.png

Overall I am very happy with the Death Guard. The models in the picture are from my local store but I could not resist the lure and start playing asap. The Miasma of Pestilence psychic power (or sorcery) was key in this game since it allowed me to take tons of enemy shooting and still stand after the smoke cleared.

The Plague Marines were my backbone and I have made them as hard to shift as possible. Standing them in terrain and getting as many times Miasma of Pestilence on them, it is no wonder that they laughed at the shooting efforts of a Deathwing squad, one Tactical Squad and one Kill Team full of combi-weapons.

In melee I have tried to play as safe as possible since my opponent had a lot of chainfists, power fists, power weapons and stuff to inflict horrible harm on my units. I have decided to charge with my Bloat-Drone since on paper it is a tough cookie and it proved to be ... ahem... Disgustingly Resilient. It was a calculated risk but my opponent was lured by this putrescent mass of flesh and this left him where I wanted him.

The Lord of Contagion is an absolute beast. This tough cookie went on to chop an entire squad of Deathwing Terminators and still be left standing with three wounds left. He is not flashy, he is not special, but he is damn tough and can take a punch and deliver a punch.

Last is my MVP, my Helbrute. He is not special but all he needs is some love and a good master. This puppy went on to blast a DA Librarian to vapor, roasted a Deathwatch team, then pounded them into the ground and then since this was not enough he also went to punch a Rhino on the snout. My Helbrute ended with three wounds but was a threat from the first minute of the game.

So what can I say. Sorry for not posting some updates but between work and exams I am a bit low on free time. Still I could not pass the opportunity to beat some loyalists so I agreed to my first game of Warhammer 40k 8th Edition. The game was a blast, the army is a blast and I can see that I will enjoy this Death Guard of mine a lot, and I really mean, a lot.

Praise be to Papa Nurgle!

Death to the False Emperor!

Great stuff, Cookie. Plague Marines are still rock solid... glad the blight drone did well too! It seems like a versatile unit between the automatic hits and resilience.

Before you mentioned those were store models I was about to be shocked and jealous of your speed painting skills xD

Welcome, Mr Cookie.

I, too, and a Chaos newbie though I have always wanted to do a Death Guard army to act as a counterbalance to my Ravenwing.

Typhus seems a no-brainer compared to the Lord of Contagion, especially if running a few units of Pox Walkers. I have the classic metal version of the model, and he has been a joy to paint.

Hi,

Here is a little update of my Chaos project.

http://shrani.si/f/i/3y/bx8GTFb/chainsword-cookie-chaos-.jpg

So everything is assembled and basecoated. The Soul Grinder is the only model left on the sprue because I am waiting to see what new comes out for the Death Guard.

I must say that the Plaguebearers of Nurgle kit was the most fun to assemble, while the Plague Drones certainly were frustrating. Then you have the Nurglings which were a blast to assemble and I have left the standalone ones still on sprue since I would like to sprinkle them around the army to make the bases more colorful.

Now I really have to begin painting. I think that the Helbrute is a nice model to start, lots of large surfaces, lots of skin and horn, to get the basics right. I need to buy a few colors more and then painting it is.

  • 1 month later...

First thing first, I would like to apologize for not updating this topic in a regular way. I must say that I enjoy playing Warhammer 40k so much that while my army remains unpainted I do use my free time to play with it as much as possible. I have managed so far to attend to all the Konor campaign weeks and I have ranked more games in these two months than I did with AoS in half a year. It is not much of an apology but I hope that explains what's with the delay.

The second thing that I came to ask is advice. A new codex came out and I am really tempted to cross the boundaries and play some other Traitor Legions too. There is so much fun stuff that I would like to try but I do not know how to go about it. My problem is that I would like to collect an army which allows me to play most of the Chaos Space Marine legions, the thing is that my friends and other players I play against have a huge lead in terms of models painted, models owned and games played. I am slowly getting into the gaming circuit of 40k in my area, and with that some limitations came to be.

The major problem I have is that an unified scheme is required. I was not asked to have a specific legion painted, and I can be flexible here, but I would like your advice on how to go about it. Currently I have some more models I got handed down, mostly Chaos Space Marines, some Noise Marines and some stuff like Khorne Berzerkes still on sprue and another DG half from the Dark Imperium boxset.

How would you advise to paint the army in a way that is quick, lorewise, and would allow me to play with all the Chaos factions?

Thank you for your patience and advice.

Sounds like you need a DIY? That way you're not explicitly tied to anything by scheme and can work with your lore. If you're going to be changing traits I'd be sure to make sure opponents are fully on board and let them know your plans in advance to make sure it's fairer as there can understandably be issues with flip flopping on rules.

Wouldn't Abbadon's Black Legion fit the profile of a unified army of various branches of CSM , and at the same time be quite easy to paint ?

Black primer, black base with some dark grey highlights, brass and gold and here you go. Or you can push it further with an anthracite type dark grey base, black wash, grey or grey-blue highlights. Quite easy and quick to deploy on a large scale.

Some would even base in brass or gold spray to avoid fussing with the golden bits and repaint the larger black areas by hand . I know I'd do for such a project, especially with the new death guard minis and their ton of details.

(Note that you'll want to find a black paint that you like and base with that, or one rhat matches the primer exactly, for the inevitable touch-ups to be neat and tidy )

Edit: if you use a black legion scheme, you can still be a spinoff diy warband that switches it's tactics regularly but as WarriorFish said, make sure to inform the opponent and get their approval to be fair with them

I have acquired the new codex CSM and I quite like how the four cult legions are represented in the Black Legion. I have asked my friends and they have told me that black is not that hard to do as long as I do not overindulge in highlights. I will try to paint a model from the boxset of three Plague Marines in the colors of the Black Legion and see how it comes about.

I have also asked my gaming buddies how they feel about the colors schemes and the requirements for the matched games in my area and they have told me that the important thing is to have the models painted and that I can play all the legions I wish as long as it is clearly stated in the army list I have to bring to each game event.

If all goes well it is a win win situation for me :biggrin.: .

BTW, what is a DIY?

DIY = "Do it yourself", catch all term for creating your own Chapter, warband etc and all that entails :)

Black can be quite easy to paint depending on how you want it to go, yes. For example I've used a dark grey base and built up several layers of Nuln Oil wash on top, helps give a nice dull black but avoids the "pure" black that a black paint gives (also leaves this for other black things, like gun cases for example if you want).

Thanks for the explanation WarriorFish. Then indeed I could use a DIY warband in the long term.

As promised here is my first painted mini and a test piece for the army scheme.

Meet Dretax the Ravenous, Earl of Rotwald and Carrier of the Neverending Hunger (I took the inspiration for the inscriptions from the Codex CSM).
