Won my first game of 8th with borrowed Grey Knights

I had Draigo, 2x5 terminators, a 5 man strike squad, dreadknight with incinerator, and a land raider.

Opponent had an inquisitor, 5 deatwatch assault marines, 3 small units of acolytes with a razorback each, a Coluxis assassin, and 2 leman russ punishers.

Mission was to steel a relic, I went first.

Turn 1: Draigo deep strikes onto the relic, 1 terminator squad drops between him and my opponent. Other term squad drops on his flank 9.1 inches away from a razorback. Landraider cripples a razorback. Terminator squad makes its charge against a razorback but loses two terminators to overwatch with lascannons.

Just about everything shoots the land raider, one wound gets through, opponent rolls a 6 for damage.

Turn 2: Draigo heroically runs away towards my edge with the relic. Dreadknight moves near him. Landraider cripples a second razorback.

Opponent disembarks his inquisitor and all his acolytes. Most everything shoots at the land raider. Once again only one shot gets through, and once again he rolls a 6 for damage.

Turn 3. Draigo heroically runs away. Land raider moves all 3" forward and shoots but doesn't do much. Terminator squad 2 is mostly dead. Dreadknight kills an acolyte squad for first blood. Terminator squad one charges the inquisitor and kills her.

Culuxis assassin shows up near Draigo but doesn't really do anything. Death war has marines show up and make their charge against my strike squad.

Turn 4: landraider misses a bunch before once again a single shot makes it through and once again my opponent rolls a 6 for damage. Dreadknight uses his psychic gate ability to move behind a Russ and razorback. He multi charges and kills the razor back. Draigo charges and kills the assassin. Strike squad dies in close combat to the deathwatch marines. My terminators all die.

Turn 5: dreadknight doesn't do much and gets killed. Draigo runs away. We roll and game continues.

Turn 6, Draigo takes 6 wounds but survives with 1 wound. Game ends. I have slay the warlord, first blood, and the relic. Opponent has breakthrough.

Win for the grey knights.

Draigo didn't have much of a choice as the assassin was between Draigo and where he was trying to hide. The assassin kept one use of Gate of Infinity from going off. Then Draigo failed to cast it twice in a row after that. Overall, my psychic mastery seemed to be lacking. I think I did 2 wounds with Purge Soul in one turn, and I used Gate of Infinity 2 or 3 times, but other than that it didn't do much. Gate of Infinity is nice, because I was able to move my DreadKnight into a position where it was closer than Draigo, and thus the tanks had to fire at it instead of Draigo.

Game took 2.5 hours but that was with me checking the index every time I did anything since I wasn't familiar with the army. This was the first round of a tournament, and there were several games that ended before ours did; there was one that was still going after ours. It was Astra Militarum versus Astra Militarum. Opponents where randomly selected for the first round before hand; it ended up with Tau V Tau, Astra Militarum V Astra Militarum, and  Inquisitors V Grey Knights. There was also a Tyranid game but I didn't see who they were fighting.

The Landraider was a beast, and a great fire magnet. It's job was to take fire, and it performed very well. Until it was hurt enough to lower its ballistic skill it crippled a razorback every time it fired. 4 lascannons hitting on 3s is really nice. I wanted to cripple the razorbacks because the relic can only be carried by infantry, and all his infantry on the board where mounted.

The Leman Russ's didn't actually do a lot. They scored a few wounds on Draigo in the last turn. Each Russ was firing 27 shots a turn, but the low AP of the punisher cannon made it mostly ineffective against my terminators.

Terminators didn't do  a lot but they did get me Slay the Warlord. I used them mostly for distraction. Dropping the one squad on the flank forced my opponent to react to them, while the other squad kept his units from catching up to Draigo.

I didn't use my strike squad effectively, they stayed back where Draigo was going to run to. When the enemy deathwatch assault marines dropped back the strike squad got in their way, but a command point was used to let the deathwatch marines strike first and the strike squad fell pretty quickly.

Razorbacks did a lot of damage. 2 had dual lascannons and the other had dual assault cannons.

Acolytes were frustrating. They are basically a guardsman with a special weapon and 3 wounds. Charging them gets you overwatched with plasma/melta/flamer. With 3 wounds each shooting them with small arms wasn't really effective; and shooting them with heavy weapons when there were 5 tanks on the table seems like a bad idea. The Dreadknight flamer worked decent on them, and massed storm bolter fire helped a little. Once in close combat the Daemon hammer works really well against them because of the damage it does.

I don't think I used it to its full potential. I kept it back at first to help escort Draigo and I think I should have been more aggressive with it; that said, the flamer worked well on the acolytes and it did really well in close combat once I got it there.
