Cato Sicarius Dead?

OK, so Im looking through the space marine mini dex that comes in the new 8th edition boxed set and I note that the captain of the Ultramarine 2nd company is named as Capt. Acheran.  On looking at the text further it states of the 2nd company....'led by captain Acheran in the absence of the legendary Cato Sicarius'.

So does this mean that sicarius is dead or something else entirely......?

'Captain of the Second Company' is listed among Sicarius' titles in Dark Imperium, so it would seem he technically still holds the position and could yet return to reclaim it should Guilliman release him from service in the Victrix Guard. Presumably that's what the quotation is alluding to.

The Primaris booklet does state that Captain Acheran commands the 2nd Company in Sicarius' absence while Sicarius himself is very much alive in Dark Imperium. Centurion Jay summed it up pretty nicely.

Aye, Sicarius got a promotion. Much like Uriel Ventris returning to head the 4th Company.

Calgar's been constantly snubbed by Guilliman since he got back, though. Because screw Calgar.

Considering this is how Guilliman's resurrection went:

"Calgar, may I have a word with you"
"Yes, my Primarch"
"You've run this organization run into the :cussing ground, Calgar"
"I tried my best to-"
"If you had just died a century ago like you were supposed to and let someone younger take your place then we wouldn't be in this mess, now would we?"
"Yes, my Primarch"
"The best you can do is bring me back to life to fix all your problems. Its probably the best move as leader you've ever made..."
"...I'm sorry I couldn't be the leader you wanted me-"
"Now, Calgar will stay behind and guard Maccrage"
"Yes, my Primarch"

Cato Sicarius dead? The only thing that is going to kill Cato Sicarius IS Cato Sicarius .... and one specific Necron lord.

Exactly. Not even GW can kill him. He has reached a level of self-absorbance that not even the writers thought anyone could achieve :O

I actually like Cato Sicarius. Your primarch thinks very highly of him and has spent time tutoring him. From the novel Dark Imperium.

He is one of my least liked characters, along with Ragnar Blackmane. Bad boys, that are to young and dynamic for rules, plot armour being the only reason they still live and are part of their Chapters. I really dislike it when rebellious, anti-authoritarian people are shown as successfull. It is simply not true. In fact, it is a great way to get you killed in 40k. In a war, you live and die by competent leadership, teamwork and discipline. Both of them have proven that they lack all of those traits, with ample amount of arrogance to boot.

I am willing to change my outlook on Sicarius, if Dark Imperium does a decent job at portraying him. I will pick it up by the end of the month.

Yeah, but there are merits to striking out on your own and performing unconventional maneuvers. Like that time Cato Sicarius used a jetpack to jump onto Tau bombers and kill their pilots, or the time he personally led a small task force to take out a Necron monolith etc. etc.

He may be rebellious and arrogant but he definitely gets results.

I never thought I'd say this in the Ultramarines forum, but: Your salty tears of hatred and discontent bring me joy.

Enjoy them while you can, because one day I may start to like him (maybe the new book has some good bits) and then you'll be out of tears :D

I highly recommend  Blades of Damocles and Knight of Talassar if you want books that make you like Cato Sicarius

Blades of Damocles in particular had this amazing paragraph:

“They have a point, though, Jorus. I do not deserve to be called a leader.’

‘Perhaps it’s not your strongest suit,’ said Numitor awkwardly. ‘I’ll tell you what you are, though.’

Sicarius looked sidelong at Numitor. ‘Let me guess. Arrogant? Blind? Callous?’

‘No, idiot,’ said Numitor. ‘You are a champion. A born warrior that even the Ultramarines look up to. Trust me on this. People watch you slaughtering these xenos bastards by the dozen, and it gives them hope. Makes them believe the Imperium can not only survive, but excel. That’s how you lead, Cato. By inspiring others, and making them want to be the best they can.”

It does look like Galenus is no longer with us, as the Firth Company Captain is now Phelian (Dark Imperium p. 130).

NOOOOOOOOO

I sincerely hope he isn't dead ;-; He was a pretty forgettable character at first but he plays a crucial role in the Space Marines Battles novels with the Ultramarines. They really made me like him.

The Plagues of Orath and Legends of the Space Marines: Cassius really fleshes him out as a character: Quiet, somewhat boring personality but an absolute legend when it comes to strategic planning and logistics

That Damocles quote is good and rings true with me. I have worked with people who are extraordinarily skilled and I found people attracted to that, but these same people just simply aren't good leaders.

I never read the Phil Kelly book but if I ever get past the mountain of Ultramarines and Thousand Sons stuff, I'll pick it up.

Also, what happened to Fabian? As Ventris appears to now be canon, does that mean Fabian's gone? His Thunderhawk was blown out of the Sky in the aftermath of the Bloodborn invasion of Ultramar in the Ventris series (I think it actually happened in one of the short stories, but I'm almost certain it was referenced in another).

Hopefully the new edition will have a complete Ultramarines Company line-up like they've done in every other Space Marine Codex which will allow us to see what's going on.

I do not think Titus is canon, simply because he is too awesome for the Ultramarines. Why? He is an actual human being who has compassion and is not subject to GW writing. Seriously, how come the best characters and arguably Chapters in 40k come from outside GW (FFG, Relic, etc.)? Oo My opinion anyway, but I still consider Blood Ravens my favourites. UM are definitely a great Chapter (especially if you remove the Ware fan fiction), don't get me wrong, but by GW standards it is like saying they are the most beautiful person in a leper colony :D Edited by Captain Idaho
Removal of swear word. Consider this an informal warning.
