Starting a second army: Deathguard and Chaos

So, uh, you win by determining who kills off most points, huh? Yuck.

I have never seen or played a mission that way; seems pretty frustrating to be honest. Nothing matters except for squeezing the maximum efficiency out of the cheapest models available, and that isn't much of a game. Big, smashy things like superheavies become a huge liability... actually just about everything is a liability except for morale-immune hordes. Conscript spam, while already good, becomes godlike under such circumstances.

No wonder you got your patootie handed to you.

If it makes you feel any better, it sounds like you lost a series of silly games that weren't worth playing.

It was 15 points for a win, 5 for a loss, 10 for a draw, and then you compared total points of destroyed units and adjusted points based on that. You got 5 points for painting your army and 1 point for basing your army. I ended the tournament with 12 points, 5 of which were from painting my army. (I literally only killed 4 grey knight marines in my third game, put two wounds on crow, and another on voldus)

There really needs to be a turn timer when fighting hoard spam, as moving, ordering, shooting 50 conscripts and 60 infantry takes freaking forever. Incidently, 10 minutes per player per turn equals exactly 2 hours. It was also very frustrating as I called the first game with 2 minutes left thinking the time would be strictly enforced, and then one match went about 10 minutes over. I literally had to kill one guardsman to tie, and I had my lord, sorcerer, and malefic lords all in range of him.

Also I don't think two of the three tables had appropriate terrain. One table had literally no cover in either deployment zone. One table had a very large building just offset from the center, and on that map with corner deployment it was just stupid. (The building was between my corner and the relic, other than my infiltrated units I had no way to actually get to the relic without going around; whereas my opponent could literally just walk up to it with nothing in the way)

First two games where on the table with no cover in the deployment zone; and both matches where against imperial guard. I went second both times, so by the time I went I had lost two earthshakers and several lascannon havoks. I think over three games I maybe got 6 earthshaker shots off combined. (one did roll a 6 for number of shots on overwatch, which was hilarious) Missile Launcher havoks were good, but I think only because the earthshakers and lascannons drew fire away from them. 4 krak missiles will hurt just about anything seriously, and 4 frag missiles is great against annoying infantry squads.

I really wanted to have a fun time; but honestly, other than the close first game it wasn't particularly enjoyable. 2 hours for two turns only to lose because you haven't really gotten to do anything yet is stupid. Starting relic with no way to get to the relic is stupid. I think the tournament organizers could have done a better job with table set up.

Also, banehammers suck. I did feel good for killing it though, as it looked like it and the Vendetta were going to kill everything I had until he got too close to the Malefic Lords, who luckily had a conscript unit between them and the banehammer.

Heavy bolter in a 5 man chaos squad felt like a waste, if you move you can't hit anything, and if you stay still you only get your three heavy bolter shots while everything else is out of range.

Castellan Crow is stupidly good in close combat. My lord with axe of blind fury took off two wounds after he did three to me, and my sorcerer didn't put any wounds on him. He then proceeded to kill both my sorcerer and lord. For every wound he does he gets another attack, and that's really dumb because he gets a lot of re-rolls and hits on 2s anyway.

I need to remove the gun shields on my earthshakers as they are stupidly tall and make it about impossible to hide them behind anything. The Marx German 88 with the barrel extended is a little bit larger than a real earthshaker, I compared with a Basilisk, but the Marx gun is taller than a Basilisk.

Armies were about what I expected, 4 imperium players and 2 chaos players, no Xenos. We had a Inquisition force, a Grey Knights army (Two named characters and a bunch of elites), a blob imperial guard, a second imperial guard with a superheavy and Yarrick giving Wyverns re-rolls, and two Alpha Legion armies, mine, and another that was mostly dreadnoughts, a kharbadis, and a hellwrite.

I need to remember not to make stupid mistakes. I completely forgot about trying to seize initiative in the first two games I played, my opponent reminded me about it in the third. It's just not something I thought about. I skipped an entire psychic phase in one match, which wouldn't have been much of a problem if I hadn't brought 7 psykers in my list. Stupid mistakes like that certainly didn't help, but to be fair, I've played 4 games now in 8th edition, the last game I played before that was with 2nd edition rules; so I'm a bit inexperienced.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, the FLGS announced an apocalypse game in November. They want to do power level, but they said it would be roughly 4,000 points per player and will be played over two days. I'm going to have to gather all of my Alpha Legion warband together with their Death Guard allies and Renegade meat shiel.....devoted followers. I ordered Zarakynel, the Slanesh daemon lord to help out.

Got some paint on my iron armor sorcerer and "berserkers". I'm not happy with how my blue paint is coming out of my airbrush. It worked great for a while and was giving good even coverage, but lately the paint has been almost pooling together, except not from gravity, it's like the paint is contracting on the surface and building up slotchy puddles. Not sure why it's happening or how to fix it. I wonder if I'm not waiting long enough for the silver to dry on them.

Anyway, here they are:

I did these a little different. I added the green by paint brush instead of airbrush. I diluted the Tamiya clear green with alcohol and tried to tint the surface. I used it a little too thick in some places but I think I started to get it down by the end.

Okay, upcoming Apocalypse game. They want power level, but said it would be around 4,000 per player, multiple players per side over two days. I've come up with a preliminary list.

Detachment 0, Auxiliary Superheavy Detachment,

Zarakynel, probably summoned to survive turn 1 shooting, or possibly in response to incoming assaults somewhere.

Detachment 1, Deathguard Battalion Detachment (most of these just protect the backfield and keep the scorpius' firing)

Count as Typhus

Chaos Lord from index

2x10x Poxwalkers, 7x plague marines

Foetid Bloat drone

2x Hellforged Scorpius (wording on chaos lord in index gives re-rolls to 1s  to hit "for all friendly <legion> models within 6", so the two Scorpius can re-roll 1's to hit if he stands next to them, which he will.

Detachment 2, Renegades + Heretics

Renegade commander

2x20 Militia, 4x Flamers each

3x1 Earthshaker Batteries (sit in backfield and shoot things with Earthshakers)

Detachment 3, Alpha Legion

Lord Arkos

Chaos Lord

Sorcerer w/ Jump Pack, combi-bolter, Force Axe

3x5 Chaos Marines, Combi-plasma, plasma in each

2x5 Havoks w/ 4x Missile Launchers each

5x Havoks w/ 4x Heavy Bolters
Xiphon Interceptor

Detachment 4, Renegades + Heretics

6x Malefic Lords (My smite and deny engine)

Extra (I estimated 200 power level but hit 200 at around 3500 points, they said 4000 per player so heres what I came up with for the extra 500 points)

5x Khorne Berzerkers, 3x Plasma Pistols, Power Fist

3x Rhinos, Combi-Bolters

5x Chosen, 5x Combi-Plasma

Got my tanks basecoated. It's a pain when your basecoat requires three different sets of colors in the airbrush per tank and you have 5 tanks. Pics are up in the alpha Legion thread.

Got a box of eBay berzerkers in the mail today. I'll start on them soon.

I have a bunch of forgeworld combi weapons coming in the mail, as well as a xiphon interceptor and a greater daemon of slaanesh. I've also got about 20 more warzone cultists to assemble, which will bring me up to 100 total. (Using renegades and heretics these can be ran as cultists, militia, or marauders). Finally I have 8 heavy bolters coming from Anvil Industries to replace the heavy bolters on my havoks, and their heavy bolters will eventually end up with my renegades.

Lots to do but it keeps me busy and gives me something to do.
