Spawning Tyranids and "reserve points"

I played a game against Tyranids the other day, and my opponent had a monster (Tervigon?) that was replacing his losses in his units of smaller organisms (gaunts?)

 

My question is this: when replacing losses does it have to be from a pool of reserve points like when summoning daemons?

The Tervigon can either create a new unit of 10 Termagants, which you have to pay for, or it can replace up to 10 dead Termagants from a unit for free. It can only replace ones with Fleshboarers and cannot increase the unit beyond its original size.

 

In case you are worried this is broken, I used a Tervigon alongside a unit of 30 Termagants the other day. I spawned a single Termagant before the Tervigon got shot to death.

As above. The 'reserve points' section of the rulebook is clear on this:

 

New unit created = comes from reserve points

replenishing losses = does not.

 

The Tervigon is more expensive that it was last edition also, a little tougher, but not invulnerable. It'll have to be close to your lines to keep replenishing gaunts, so can be in bad positions.

The only exception to this I've seen are Spore Mines and Mucolid Spores, which are free when they are created by units that fire them (ie, Biovores, Harpies, etc.).

Yup, both of those include very specific exceptions to the rule in their special rules/abilities text.

The thing to keep in mind is that 40k is more "Warcraft 3" than "Warcraft 2" *in the sense that each Faction can operate in very different ways. It's a beautiful thing (when it's balanced).

 

Tyranids dont' have apothecaries or medics or anything of the sort. LIkewise, other than the living drop pod (Tyrannocyte) they do not have transports at all. So the Tervigon sort of fills in that gap for one specific type of unit.

 

It can be easy to think of something as being unfair or OP (not saying you did this, Aznable) but when you consider things in the bigger context it makes sense.
