List theorycrafting.

Okay, I've been taking stock of what I have on hand, and with the addition of another Stormraven I can field something like the following:

Air Wing Detachment

-Fire Raptor

-2x Stormraven

Vanguard Detachment

-Shrike

-Sternguard Squad

-Vanguard Squad

-Contemptor

Outrider Detachment

-Chaplain w/jump pack

-2 Assault Squads

-Land Speeder Tempest Wing

A couple questions about that.

1) How many more bodies do I need to not get steamrolled ny hordes?

2) Roughly how many points would I have to be playing at to make the above feasible?

I have enough Tactical marines to make a few squads at least, and 2 full squads for sure. I also have enough Scouts for 3-4 minimum squads, and enough Devastators for 2 demi squads. Should I try for a battalion instead?

I know the flyers will end up costing ~1,000 points by themselves, so should I not bother under 2,500 points?

I don't need rules or point costs or anything, I'll have the new stuff soon enough.

Interesting Approach!

If been counting and calculation around a bit too and although I try to stick to the 2000 Points Border, I already thought about ways to fill a battalion. 4 5-Men-Squads of Scouts + 2 Tactical Half-Squads, that's "just" roughly 600 - 700 Points even of you throw in one or two Rhinos. And 9 CP are really tempting – and ravenguardish …

If I can fit that into 2,000 points, my vague plan is to start nothing but the flyers and Tempests on the table and hope for the first turn.

Dread and Sternguard in one Raven, 1 assault squad and the chaplain in the other. Vanguard and Shrike deep striking where they seem most useful.

Ah. I have to correct myself … the Battalion of course only has +3 CP. I meant the Bridage (sound too similar for me). But that is of course very hard to achieve with only 2000 Points … sorry or the mess. More coffee for me! :blush.:

The fire Raptor has a lot of dakka. That should help vs. high model count armies. You don't have to engage with your marines until you feel comfortable you can handle the numbers.

It might be tough fitting everything in a 2000 point list though.

It seems to me, the bigger the toy the bigger the points cost.  I mean, this makes sense, but with the current point costs, I perceiving some units will be out of reach for "normal" games.

From the few I've looked into so far, it seems like the guns the bigger models can bring usually justify the points. Assuming most games are going to be played around 2000 points, a 400 points Raptor doesn't sound too bad.

I figured 2 Ravens and a Raptor opening up on turn 1 should put a sizable dent in the opposition. Plus the presence of the Raptor should draw fire off the Ravens.

That's 10 mega bolter shots, however many the quad heavies put out, 24 assault cannon shots, another 12 heavy bolter shots (if I go with heavy bolters for the Ravens), and 12(?) Stormstrike missiles.

That's a lot of dakka that I can split between units.

Probably fill in whatever points are left over with Scouts or a Dev squad or 2.

It can transport 12 <INFANTRY> models and 1 <DREADNOUGHT>. Jump and Terminator models take up double the space. Centurion models take up triple.

You would pretty much guarantee first turn if all you deploy is the flyers.  You are looking at 536 points just for the Ravens. I don't know what the Raptor costs with all the upgrades but I'm assuming close to 400?

So 170 for each of the Contemptors, plus 65 each for naked marines brings you to 1650 ish points? Heh, doesn't sound too bad.  Plus 225 for each termie squad brings you to 2120?

I'm playing around with a tri-raven list myself, although for Star Phantoms so I'm filling the birds with devastators instead ;)

You get a pretty nice alpha strike, with almost guaranteed 1st turn if you put everything in a Raven (remember though that other deepstrike units have to be "deployed" to the teleportarium or similar, so increase your deployed unit count). Plenty of dakka on a basic raven for ~275 points for clearing hordes (pro tip: always take the hurricanes!)

Then you can drop off your dudes to tackle the big stuff while the Ravens go and finish up the infantry.

This just in from High Command: the above plan works every time and never backfires :)
