With the drop of 8th this has shaken me out of my 20 year hibernation of actually playing 40K. Will be having a small refresher game in the next few week. I've come up with a 50 power point list based up models that I have painted. Its based around a Brigade and Spearhead Detachment.

Brigade Detachment (+ 3CP) (34 pw pts)

HQ

Company Commander (3 pwpts)

Primaris Psyker (2 pwpts)

Elites

Bullgryns (2x brute shield/mace, 1x slab / grenadier gauntlet) (7 pwpts)

Command Squad (3x plasma, Company Standard) (3 pwpts)

Master of Ordnance (2 pwpts)

Troops

3 x Infantry Squads (flamer, vox) (9 pwpts)

Scion Squad (2x plasma, Tempestor: bolt pistol, pw sword) (3 pwpts)

Transports

Chimera (Multilaser, H Bolter) (5 pwpts)

Spearhead Detachment (+1CP) (16 pw pts)

HQ

Lord Commissar (power sword, bolt pistol) (4 pw pts)

Heavy

Basilisk (6 pwpts)

Heavy Weap Squad (3x Lascannon)

Heavy Weap Squad (3x Missile Launcher)

Thats what I've come up with.

In terms of other options from my painted collection, got a LRBT, Armoured Sentinal, Orgyns (x5), Psykers (x2), Astropath, Master of Fleet, Wyrdvane Psykers (x7), Platoon Commanders (x2), Infantry Squad, Command Squads (x2, flamers,  couple of melta guns), Vet Squad (3x melta), Commissars (x2). I do have more options unpainted, but I only want to use painted stuff.

I have no idea what I will be playing against, trying to create a balanced list that can cover most threats. But I'm a little out of practice building lists. Any C&C would be very welcome.

Cheers

Baz

Only played a few games so by no means an expert but i would be tempted to try get a few more orders in. Currently you only have capacity to give 2 orders a turn but have 5 units that you can give them to, thus maybe look to add another company commander or at least a platoon commander. The other potential change would be as you are using Power Levels might be worth adding the missile launchers to the infantry units as they can split fire, thus freeing up 3 more PL's for another company or platoon commander.

I am not sure I would rely on HWT's to provide the bulk of my AT / Multi wound firepower.

The Basilisk does well in this role, although maybe a LRBT might be a better option?

Who do you plant to buff with the Psyker?

Id almost be tempted to run a Tempestor Prime to give re-roll 1's to hit to the Plasma scion squad as opposed to the LC or Psyker.

@ Purple rain. I forgot you could do that (Heavy Weap in blob sqauds)! If I did that I would lose the spearhead detachment and the CP associated with it. Whats considered more important, more CP for re-rolls or additional orders?

@duz. I could include the LRBT by scrubbing either my chimera / bullgryns and heavy weap teams. My LRBT has hull and sponson heavy bolters. Would that provide better AT/multi wound potential. Hadn't thought on where it place the psyker, bullgryns or blobs? My inclination would be the bullgryns.

A second set of orders I think would be better than the extra CP. You can use them every turn and youre guaranteed to get the result you want.

Hrmm hard choice. I know I really want to keep Bullgryns in my list. (After not being avle to field them for years!)

At that level maybe you have the tools you need?

I'll reorganise. I'll drop a heavy weap team and add its contents to the blobs. I'll throw in a platoon commander and an Astropath with the saved points, I can then use a vanguard detachment and keep the CP.

So I'm going to be taking part in the Battle for Konor campaign that my FLGS this weekend (been given a pass by Mrs our_baz). I'm going to take my IG. I've done some tweaking to the list above. For the mission that will be played this weekend I will be playing on the defensive most likely (opponent unknown). If any of the the more experienced guard Generals out there have any thoughts on the list / strategy I would welcome this. As this will be only my second game with guard in 25 years and my first with my Life guards ever!

Brigade Detachment (+ 3CP) (50 PL)

HQ

Company Commander (power sword,3 PL)

Primaris Psyker (2 PL)

Elites

Bullgryns (2x brute shield/mace, 1x slab / grenadier gauntlet) (7 PL)

Master of Ordnance (2 PL)

Platoon Commander (shotgun, 2 PL)

Commissar (power sword) (2 PL)

Troops

3 x Infantry Squads (flamer, vox, missile launcher team) (9 PL)

Scion Squad (2x plasma, Tempestor: bolt pistol, pw sword) (3 PL)

Heavy

Basilisk (6 PL)

Heavy Weap Squad (3x Lascannon) (3 PL)

LRBT (heavy bolter x 3, 11 PL)

Hrmm I think that list has legs for that PL.
Personally I'd probably take a Wyvren over a LRBT at that level especially when youre playing defender.

Guard do well as a static gun line. Castle up in as much cover as you can. Make sure no one can DS in to your lines. So make sure there's plenty of 9" denial zones around.

Good luck Baz! We expect a full report Monday morning no excuses! ;) :tu:

Hi agree with Duz_. A wyvren instead of the LRBT or at least some other arty to utilize the MoO more. Also only one commissar is risky if you opponents bring snipers I've had mine capped pretty quick and then the squads die quick to battle shock. Also that HWS is vulnerable to alpha strike. Set them up last with good fire lanes but just out of your opponents weapon ranges.

Thanks for the advice guys I'll take it into the game of Sunday.

I will have to invest in more artillery, a lot of people on the board are praising the benefits of a Wyvern. As I currently do not own one.

I was skeptical of them at first and bought one second hand. I shortly afterwards bought a second brand new one. ;)
