Masochism: A Painting Journey (Howling Griffons)

Hi folks, getting back into 40k for 8th and since it has reignited my desire to play I decided to build a force I'd always wanted to do, for both background and aesthetic reasons, yet never had an actual reason to spend my limited money purchasing.

So now, it's time for me to begin down the long, grinding path of quartered red and yellow. I welcome all comments and constructive criticism (as well as any tips on parking straight lines!)

I have little progress right now, as I've spent only a few hours actually painting, but here is the first Tactical Marine with some proper colours (apologies for the crappy pictures, my phone is the only camera I have and isn't amazing):

Thanks for checking out my humble painting, and I hope you will enjoy my adventure!

Cheers,

Tom.

Aww yeah! Looking good! I love seeing two difficult to paint colors applied in a quartered scheme! I tried that with Sons of Malice so I have an inkling of this suffering.

My only critique is the red. It looks like it was painted on yellow because I can see it between some raised edges. Like the foot and elbow areas. Touch those up and you will do Mancora proud.

The model has a base coat of a light brown (Skrag brown I think) but I'm not 100% sold on it, for the reason you mentioned. I normally use a darker brown base for red (gives it a good richness!) so I'll have to darken it a little or just suffer by painting two browns quartered as well :P

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate the extra eyes, and good to know I'm not the only person crazy enough to do quartered schemes!

  • 5 months later...

Ok, so I've been extremely lax in my painting Brothers, for that I am sorry! But apparently tonsillitis is good for motivation, as I got the bug (get it?) to paint up my Captain, and I'm pretty proud of him.

He took me roughly 10 hours to do, though his base isn't yet finished (I took the photos just before doing the layer of Agrellan Earth, because that takes forever to dry).

I actually have a few more painted, but I'm still doing the Sergeant, so I'll post them all up as one. Maybe I'll do that in less than four months? Who knows! :tongue.:

Nice start, and welcome to the howling griffon madness. (There does seem to be more of us around these days)

Really liking the captain, and such clean lines with him (I know it’s something I struggled with when I started mine)

2 quick questions though

Where’s the shield and icon on it from? I’m using custodes shield to represent storm shields but tat looks like an idea I want to explore

What swayed you towards this version? I went with the forgeworld reversed scheme as I felt the chapter badge will look better on a yellow background but this is the first time outside of the deathwatch I’ve seen quartered shoulder pads.

All in all though a great start. You’re doing Mancora proud...

Thanks for the kind words Brother! :)

The Shield itself is the Anvil Industries Spartan Shield; the small mount is a Terminator shoulder insignia; the Griffon symbol is from Pop Goes The Monkey.

As for the Chapter symbol/pad, the general Chapter iconography is the black Griffon on a quartered background. While the Howling Griffons don't usually use Company colours, I just felt like using the full 'proper' iconography on the shoulder (rather than a block red background).

Also, I've always known Griffons as being Yellow/Red on the top half, so that's why I went for that. I like that they're actually better at interpreting the Codex than the Ultramarines (UM actually have non-Codex compliant stuff: Tyrannic War Veterans aren't in Codex!) and so wanted to be as accurate as I could be - so regular quartering and quartered symbol :)

I will be doing up a squad of something at some point in full camo, because camo is in the Codex damnit :P Though that is later, and will be much later, as I have loads get done!

Cheers,

Tom.

Well, I got my first Tactical Squad finished (and by finished, I mean that I finally got off my butt and finished the Sergeant, who's been sat semi-painted for about two months!)

So here is Squad Astures:

Sergeant and Special Weapon Marine:

Not the best quality pictures, I'm afraid, as I only have my phone camera. Sergeant's base is not finished (needs drybrushing, varnish and grassing) but the squad is basically done!

Comments and criticism welcome, thanks for looking at my slow slog through my Howling Griffons.

Cheers,

Tom.
