Dicebod's Deathwatch [WIP]

Hi all!

As of last month, I started building a brand new Deathwatch army for 8th edition, and figured I post up some of my WIP & completed models for your enjoyment (and critiques!)

I was able to get my hands on one of the Deathwatch transfer sheets that (perplexingly) only existed in the LE Deathwatch codex, so I have decided to fluff these guys up as from Talasa Prime (will also make more sense for Fate of Konor).

First up: the black!

Primed & Zenithal

Starting off, we have Vallejo Black Primer followed by two airbrushed Zenithal highlights: Vallejo Game Air Sombre Grey (blue-ish, which is a nice contrast to all the red) and a 50/50 mix of that Sombre Grey and Vallejo Game Air Stonewall Grey.

The red stripes on the vehicles are Vallejo Game Air again, Gore Red followed by a Blood Red highlight.

As for the troops, here's a few example of what I've got so far:

Deathwatch Sergeant

This guy is a Dark Angels Sgt, armed with a Xenophase blade and a combi-plasma.  I like this loadout, and my first two Sergeants are both rocking this kit.

And my first HQ completed:

Lightly Converted Deathwatch Librarian

A lightly-converted Blackshield Librarian, with the Force Axe from the FW Sevrin Loth retinue kit.

I'm building to 1000 points right now, which consists of:

HQ: Librarian w/ Force Axe, Watch Master

Troops: 2x identical Kill Teams - Sgt. w/ Xenophase Blade & Combi Plasma, Blackshield w/ Boltgun & Thunder Hammer, 2x Veterans with Power Swords & Boltguns, 1x Veteran w/ Frag Cannon (to be riding in Razorbacks).

Elites: Venerable Dreadnought w/ Plasma Cannon & Heavy Flamer (next on the painting table!)

Dedicated Transports: 2x Razorbacks w/ Twin Lascannons (turrets are Kromlech upgrades).

Once I have this built and have some games under my belt, I plan on adding a Corvus or two and more kill teams.

Hope you guys enjoy the thread!

Great work on the weathering and +1 for using Kromlech parts.  :)

I especially like your halberd-wielding Librarian, great character on that guy.  And thanks for the tutorial, that's something often missing in the WIP threads these days!

That does look really nice, if a bit light black. I like the old Forge World bits, too, adds nice detail

Thanks @Irbis!  The zenithal on the Librarian turned out a bit more...intense than the rest of the dudes - I think I need an airbrush with a finer needle :teehee:

@Vel'Cona thank you for your kind words!  Hopefully this'll help folks avoid some of my fumbling with blacks & greys :biggrin.:

After seeing on GW's FB page that Deathwatch can take (some) Primaris dudes, I got the bug and went out and picked up the new Primaris Captain:

Deathwatch Primaris Captain and Size Comparison

I am thinking he'll make a durable (and relatively cheap) backfield HQ to sit with a Stalker bolter squad and give out his aura buff to armor pieces (Twin Lascannon Razorbacks/Dreads).  The MC Stalker Bolt Rifle is nasty, even if it's just Heavy 1.

I swapped out his shoulderpads for a Brazen Claws one from the Veterans kit and the Deathwatch Pad from the upgrade sprue.  I wanted him less pointing with the sword and more gesturing/inspiring his men, so I cut off the neck of the bare head that came on the captain's sprue and glued it onto a sufficiently blinged helmet from the Vanguard Veterans kit.

The dread is what's on my painting table right now - I've included it here just to show how big these new Primaris HQ models are...or to show how stubby the Dread kit is

Can't wait to get this guy painted!

I basically use the same recipe for black - almost to a T - but then use targeted black glazes to bring it back down.  It is really effective and honestly doesn't take that long to do.  It usually takes me about 1 min per coat per model and I usually do 3 coats.

Try it out!  My recipe is 50% Abbadon Black AIR + 50% Glaze Medium and water to taste.

I think you will be happier with the black at the end of the day.

Thanks @MeltaRange!  I neglected to mention that everything gets a coat of Nuln oil (probably 60% wash, 40% H20), but I'm intrigued by your glazing for a more intense black - thanks for the tip!
