Xenomortis' Deathwatch

Hi,

I have been lurking on this board for a while, picking up tips and tactics which have been really useful. The resources thread has been particularly helpful, especially the custom stalker pattern boltguns and shoulder insignia sections. I started collecting Deathwatch at the beginning of the year and currently have built / painted:

Bikers

Power maul - Ultramarines

Power sword - White scars

Power sword - Dark Angels - Ravenwing

Transport

Razorback - Twin lascannon

Flyer

Corvus Blackstar

I had some good success in 7th but also took some beatings. I play with a group of friends so casual but we all play pretty hard. Frag cannons were king for me in 7th and every game won their points back. The stalker pattern boltgun squad had very mixed results - some games making some solid kills and others not doing very much at all.

From a modelling perspective I started with Kill Team Cassius and then got the Watchblade Taskforce box. I added to this the a Tactical Squad and a Sternguard squad to give loads of bits to play with. Also purchased various shoulder pads from ebay and an order from Shapeways. Currently I'm working on a venerable dread and more Vanguard Vets.

I'm yet to play in 8th with Deathwatch (also got Orks and Dark Angels) so looking forward to play testing. I will get some pics uploaded when I get chance

Welcome to the forums!  Looks like a pretty sprawling collection of DW there.  Planning to post up any pics of your army?  :smile.:

Hi Vel'Cona, thanks for the welcome :) I tried to take some pics last night but left it too late and the lighting was awful. I'll get some taken when I get chance hopefully over the next couple of days.

Got a 4 player 'carnage' game next week so going to try my DW out. Not fielded my Blackstar before so looking forward to how that performs

Welcome! I'm eager to see some pictures too, it looks like a pretty mean list. I suspect the beatings you took from this list were from the longer range stuff?

Those vanguard guys work great in kill teams in this new edition, just a heads up :)

I think you're going to love using that blackstar in this edition! How did you like the infernus bolters?

Thanks for the welcome :) Yeah it was particularly longer range armies I struggled against. Tau in particular but also guard with massed artillery / leman russes.

The problem with my vanguard vets is coherency. I intended to play them in 1 or 2 man units with a specific role in 7th. The 2 I have built / painted were designed for anti-infantry work and did a pretty good job, if they didn't get to combat they still attracted quite a bit of fire or moved quickly to secure objectives. The other 2 I have built (not painted) are a HTH and a powerfist/bolt pistol which were for anti-armour / monstrous creatures. 2 units of 2 would have been fine but putting all 4 together is a bit of a mismatch to be honest. I probably need to invest in a box of 5 so I have more options. Of course I can include single vanguard vets in kill teams which is my only option for now.

I found Infernus heavy bolters good in 7th but I feel on paper they have been nerfed a little in 8th. I will play test and see how they go.

My experience in 8th has been moderate. I paired mine up with my stalker bolters. It's a little underwhelming if it's against anything other then infantry, but that heavy flamer has been really nice when that unit gets charged. I've recently switched to missile launchers for better wound capability, but if they get charged/tied up in CC, they're done.

I'm not sure we can run smaller units of termies and VV anymore so you may need to adjust for that; forcing us to focus on our kill teams a bit more if you can't run the full 5-10 man squads.

Some people have suggested looking at storm bolters as well (rapid fire 2 @ 24 inches is not too bad). Play some games soon and let us know!

They look awesome. On one of your pics, you got a shotgun dude with some pale/grey skin. How did you paint that? i mean.....which colors did you use?

Thanks mate :) The Flesh Tearer? I think it was a base coat of Pallid Wych Flesh, shaded with Druchii violet (especially around the eyes), highlighted back up with Pallid Wych Flesh and then a fine highlight of White Scar

Excellent work overall, it's great to see a fully painted army pop up, especially one with as much character as the DW.  I really like the individual touches you've put into your Veterans, such as the Carcharodon covered in blood or the HF-wielding blonde Lamenter.  :)

But I didn't see a Dreadnought in there . . .

Thank you, appreciate that. I particularly enjoy the painting and modelling side of the hobby so try to inject as much character as I can into the models. I spend way too much on eBay and bits sites on bits of plastic and resin

Dread should be finished tomorrow hopefully

Beautiful venerable and Amazing army!

I have only 20 veterans, 5 bikers, 5 vanguards, 2 pods, 1 venerable in the making :D

My VenDread is from the UM and His name is Calistarius (former Sergeant of the 6th Squad (sternguard) of the 1st company wounded against the orks on armageddon)

Yourdread has a name and a chapter?

Awesome :biggrin.: just got my 3rd Start collecting Deathwatch box. Maybe i should try and paint one of my dreads :biggrin.:

I've always liked dreads aesthetically, unfortunately in previous editions they just haven't been worth fielding. Hopefully 8th will give them a well needed boost

Very nice army. Those armies give me a lot of issues too. Astra is really strong this edition. The army looks great, and I love the extra shoulder pads.

Thanks mate. Got a 4 player game this Friday against Genestealer Cult, Astra Militarum and Tau. I think it will be a tough game for the DW! Probably hang back a bit and hope they take each other out before I move for the central objective

Glorious Dreadnought!  What's his name, though??? :huh.:

Xenomortis obviously :biggrin.:

Thanks very much :blush.:

Sounds like you've got a good selection to get going with.

My dread is Xenomortis - he's the last remaining member of a now excommunicate traitoris chapter. So kind of a Black Shield dread!

I have been toying with the idea of building a 10 man DW 'devastator squad'. I already have the 5 man Stalker Pattern Boltgun squad but I'm thinking of making this into a 10 man squad with 6 Stalkers and 4 missile launchers backed up by a Watch Master. It's pretty expensive to do this but I think it would give me some good back field support to lay down fire.

Have anyone painted a chapter specific Dreadnought? like painting the "right "shoulder" or entire arm in that chapter color?

I've seen a few when I was searching on Google images.

From a fluff perspective though, when a veteran is deemed worthy to be interred into dreadnought army, they basically lose all allegiance to their parent chapter and are 100% dedicated to the Deathwatch.

I'm working on my Mortis right now and have painted the right shin guard in the Chapter colour rather than the shoulder as it was a slightly smaller space to work with and thus the original chapter colours won't take up too much of a model that should largely be black and silver. I figured that the marine would still want some nod to his origins even while interred.

Nice Dread, xeno-mortis. Those are definitely the best panels to use from the Ven Dread kit for for DW

I didn't even think to use those ones.  It does look really awesome.  :)
