Calling all Dread-heads!

Recommended Posts

So as I'm brainstorming army builds for my Iron Hands, I find myself drawn more and more often to filling out my Elites with Dreadnoughts, which made me wonder if maybe I should just go really heavy on Dreadnoughts.  Has anyone built a Dreadnought-heavy (or, Omissiah forbid, an all-Dreadnought) army yet?  Have you brainstormed, played it?  What do you think will work well, or what has worked (or hasn't worked!)?

I thought we all agreed it's Dreadnuts? :tongue.: I've used Dread heavy lists before but not in 8th... I am planning on finishing the outstanding Ironclad and Venerable I have for a grand total of 8 Dreads :biggrin.: From what I've seen Dreads are more or less similar in role to before, at least in how I used them.

Their ability to slap things about in combat has always been useful as a flexible support unit but with the -1 to hit penalty on Dreads (boo! hiss!) I feel their weapon platform role has taken a hit. Getting to strike first with some pretty nasty attacks has made Dreadnoughts power houses on the charge, so a DCCW is almost essential with how quickly armies will close as well as still a great way to take down big nasties. No more whiffing on a 4+!

The Venerable's 2+ to hit is accodingly golden, the 6+ "FNP" a cherry on top and Ironclads are meaty - with frag assault launchers being useful now on top. So while the Dread's role may have adjusted a bit I feel that generally speaking we can carry on as before if desired.

Main thing I'm waiting on is CTs - they've been great for representing my Chapter so I'm hopeful this will continue! If GW gets it right it could be a real shot in the arm to Dreads :smile.:

I love dreadnoughts and wish to utilize the six or so variants that I have.  What has been difficult for me to come to terms with is their increased points costs, but that is totally worth it considering how good dreads are now.

It was pretty easy to make a vanguard detachment and stuff the elites section full of dreads.

I have actually played a few games already with an all dread army by using the iron father (chaplain) dread to lead my force. Its a lot of fun actually. Army transport and deployment is super easy too lol.

If you go this route, always go for the venerable dread over the vanilla dread. The added buffs are too crucial. Use them as fire support for your ironclads and contemptors to charge forward. I equip my ironclad with DCCW and chainfist. I haven't tried a leviathan yet, but I have faced one in a wolf dread army. In one round of shooting from its melta lance, it killed my ironclad. Its terrifying!

Hi,

I'm currently trying to work out how to build an all dread list, I was thinking blood angels for the librarian dread HQ but someone over there said Iron hands would be good for all dread

is there anyway of doing all dread that doesn't use the FW Chaplin dread, if not what HQ would you use?

I'm fairly new to all this space marine malarkey so I'm looking forward to hearing your answers of wise and powerful internet people

I'd probably need to do 2 Vanguard detachments at 2kpts/100pp so would need 2 HQs

what makes a good Techmarine, I'm not a fan of the finecast one but I do have loads of Ad Mech bits I could use for conversions

Why not take the chaplain dread? With our tactics he gets 2 6+ save roll per damage that gets through. 3 with the warlord trait. Give him the armor indomitus and he becomes very hard to shift.

Other chapters have HQ dreads too but seeing as this is an IH dread thread, they wouldn't be relevant.

Has anyone tried deredeos? Are they worth taking over other dakka dreads such as mortii, venereables, or dakka leviathan?

The problem is that in many locations IA models are not considered legal and usually are not allowed on tournametns (they are considered OP in many cases). That's why I have to stick with my Techmarine :(

Welcome to the dark side=)

You can check out my evolving dread heavy list in my list thread here http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/335428-1st-crack-at-2k-pts-of-sms-8th-edition/

We've posted back and forth, but you have to decide if you want Vens or Redemptors for dakka.  Or both if you have the points.

A techmarine on a bike has been a go-to for me.  Bike makes it so he can be anywhere a dread is about to lose a wound and go down a stat threshold, if using Redemptors/Contemptors.  Also means he can scoot away from being locked in combat as well.  I like the beamer, even though I'm not a fan of rolling for shots, it's still done well by me.

You can pair a Vanguard detachment with a Btn. to get 4 more CP.

Or maybe multiple Vanguard Det. if you wanted to be a die hard with just techmarines and dreads=)

If you proxy a Redemptor and use it,  Post on it please.  I'm curious on peoples thoughts on Redemptor vs. Venerable since they compete for the same slot for me.

Edit: I completely forgot about Ironclad.  I was a staunch, It needs 2 CCW kinda guy for 2 editions now.  I've been using this:

Ironclad Dreadnought [8 PL, 152pts]: Dreadnought chainfist, Heavy flamer, Hurricane bolter, Ironclad Assault Launchers

Keeps it cheap, Is way better for hordes (which the IC suffers from sometimes, being locked in w/ a huge mob).  Chainfist for reliable dmg.

I find I don't need the 2 CCW re-roll because of the Captain, when he's around.  If it was re-rolling wounds like claws I might reconsider.

Also when I kick off 24 Assltcannon shots, 18 redemptor shots, 6 Kheres, 6 frag missles, and the hurricane bolters, in a turn while the stars align, and I hit and wound, pee runs down opponents' legs.

Is there an official model for this, if not what do you use?

He started life as a normal bike guy.  Then had a horrible smelting incident where he recovered w/ techmarine e-bay bits grafted on=)

I have to figure out a conversion beamer as that is imaginary right now.  Any ideas?

No, he's saying that the only way to have a model with a conversion beamer is to convert the beamer.  Thus, the "aptly named" comment.  As for the rest, GW's Codex FAQ post on Warhammer Community states that you can still use options for a units that is in the Index but not the Codex; the Codex options simply represent the physical options that GW currently produces physical models and bits.

Using the Chappy Ven Dread is the only way to get an all-dreadnought army, by fulfilling the HQ slot requirement. So it has a purpose... but honestly I prefer a cheap Techmarine to help fix them up instead.
