My dynasty/army idea

Hello everyone,

I've been a Space Wolves player since 2002. Death Korps of Krieg player since 6th Edition. But I wanted to try a different army that wasn't a Imperial Army. And the necrons appealed to me because of their hardiness. So in 7th edition I started collecting my models. And with the release of 8th edition I know I don't have to change a whole lot.

My idea for my necrons I got from one of the Imperial Armour books released by FW. Where the Krieg army saw necrons showing signs of corrosion. And it got me thinking I never seen a rusted necron army.

Do any of you know someone doing this type of army? Right now I am working on getting my 60 warriors put together and painted. Overlord and 2 immortal units are ready to go.

My idea for them is there were nothing around to upkeep the crypt. So this army will not have spyiders nor scarab swarms. I know it might not be very competitive. But I do feel it will be cool to have the theme and narrative.

Nephrekh Dynasty looks pretty rusty, but not for the reasons you've laid out.  I think I remember seeing another rusty looking Dynasty when trying to devise a color scheme for my own, but now I can't remember the name.

I also don't think giving up spyders and scarabs will automatically make it not competitive.  I think it sounds like a good idea!  And if you decide playing without spyders/scarabs isn't fun, just paint them in a separate dynasty's colors, and say they stole them recently.

I am using typhus corrosion for my base paint, dry brushing troll slayer orange and edging with leadbelcher on my troops. I am basing the vehicles ie; monolith and arcs with stirland mud and using the same dry brush and edging paints. Well I am using Rysa rust on the vehicles. I wish I knew how to upload photos to share with you all.

I am thinking about doing a swamp/bog base with some pieces of moss hanging off random areas of the models.

You have to host your photos online somewhere, Flikr is what I use, and then copy the 'share' link text into your window here either via the little picture icon (popup where you paste the link) or just copy/paste the text right into your post if it already has tags.

Would love to see some pics, I wanted to to rustyCrons for a while but deemed the effect too time consuming to do for the whole army. Seems like you've got something that sounds simple and effective going on.

No worries, and it's looking pretty interesting so far. If you want the links to go away delete everything in the copy/paste from Flikr outside of the tags.

EDIT: looking at this on my desktop you can also change the size of the pictures you upload in the 'share' popup on Flikr. I can reeeaaaaally see the detail on my monitor

Thanks Emicus!

So for an update. I am currently working on the 48 warriors out of the 60 I am planning. And I have ordered 2 crypteks. They should be arriving this week!

So here is some photos of a couple of the I have finished painting;

That weathered look is really working for you, usually I'm not a fan of the acrylic green on painted models but you're pulling it off. The only thing I would suggest, and only if you're looking for something to add to those warriors, is a bit of green on the eyes and the chest emblem (yeah I know, it's what I did for mine :P) since the model is so dark. Even just the eyes would give the Warriors a much meaner look I think.

I like the green you're painting, matches the acrylic well. Just thought the model could use a sympathetic detail. Are you applying moot green over black or doing a dark green as a layer up to it?

It's just moot green over black. I am using the citadel airbrush line. So should I work up to the moot green? Starting with something like caliban green?

If you want bright colours you have to build up to them for sure. Hitting the area with caliban green then moot green will help the moot look better, as well as give you the option to work on a bit of a gradient if you like.

Are you using a brush or an airbrush to paint?

  • 4 weeks later...
So this past weekend I picked up the doom/night scythe kit. And I think I am due for a tetanus shot with all the rusted looking models. I am trying to come up with a dynasty color that I can have showing through in spots on the models. I don't want it to be too bright. I was wondering on if you guys have any ideas for a contrasting color? I thought about genestealer purple. But I would have to mute it down.

I did a test model of it on a warrior. It looked pretty good. But not so much on the vehicles. But I was able to do some research and I found the dynasty on which my legion will be a part of. The Vralekth Dynasty. They are a part of the Imperial Armour 12. They were spotted on the planet of Hydroghast in the Orpheus system. Now they have a home and a name.
