Flyer based lists

Recommended Posts

Seeing all the talk about flyer spam in the competitive scene has got me thinking. Do you think a list centered around our own flyers would be competitive? Our flyers are more expensive than those of our fellow astartes. I don't think 4 or 5 is viablessed but maybe two or three with some ground support could work? I have a lit in mind but would like to hear the thoughts of my fellow wolf lords.

I planned on doing 2 flyers, 1 with 15 Blood Claws+Lukas, another with 10WG/5TDAWG's with a Lone wolf, Arjac, Grimnar. Might switch Grimnar out. Then add Long fangs with a razorback and snipers to hold objectivs.

The other idera was a Stormfang with long fangs to get them wherever i wanted, and the WG's pack in a stormwolf, again with Snipers to hold oobjectives.

A stormfang is only slighly more expensive then a Stormraven, but you have a Hellfrost Destructor which is great and you can gear for more anti flier with Skyhammer Missiles, at which point your cheaper then a Stormraven.

I think SW might do the Air wing better then generic space marines actually.

Our flyers don't put out the same number of shots that the stormravens do but ours are of higher strength. Stormravens seem betger suited to killing infantry and light vehicles whereas our own take on larger targets better.

I have one stormwolf and one Stormfang at the moment. I had considered fielding both of them along with 3 long fang packs, some razorbacks, and Bjorn. I may add a couple of bare bones BC packs for objective capping.

I concur that GHs are better but I only have 130 points left in my list unless I make cuts elsewhere.

Intercessors?

Primaris arn't great as the workhorses of your army but they are cheap wounds and 30" range help keep them relevant while sitting still.

Personally I find grey hunters better at camping. Not quite as cheap as blood claws but the bolters do much better in a more stationary role imho

A squad of PAWG with chainsword x2 and storm bolters seems like it would hold an objective much better than GH, for only a bit more points. Not so much, I'd suppose, if you are using power levels.

That's actually a pretty good idea. So far the list looks like this:

Airwing

Stormwolf, meltas

Stormfang, stock

Stormfang, stock

Vanguard

3× 5 Wolf Guard, 1 combi-plasma, 4 storm bolters

5 Long Fangs, 4 ML

5 Long Fangs, 4 LC

This leaves 426 points for an HQ and some other stuff. Still working it out really.

Consider putting jump packs on some of those WG units. Pretty cheap upgrade, but having 10" movement vs 6" will help a ton on getting to the best available position to maximize any rapid fire opportunities.

While its true our planes are powerful compared to the stormraven or storm talon but they may have the advantage in point cost cause ours are pretty pricey. They can bring in two storm talons for one Stormwolf at bare bones cost. Still, the stormfang/stormwolf has a greater array of powerful options compared to the talon which has less options.

Another thing to consider with these flyer lists that they can now be charged by anything with a pair of wings or jump packs. So make sure to include some Skyclaws to help run interference against both ground and aerial targets while your stormfangs and WG with Jump packs make key strikes at critical points in the enemy's defenses.  Here's a list that might fit the theme to a flyer list:

WL with jumppack Th/SS cause you want a heavy hitter.

WP with Jumppack

5-man WG with jump packs, FA/SS if you got the bits or Th/SS.

3x 5-10 skyclaws loaded however you need them to be.

1x Stormfang armed with skyhammer/lascannons. Keep the bolters for handling mobs.

If you got the room then add a Stormwolf with at least the multi melta for tank slagging.  Put a pack of Wulfen in there so that they can get to the enemy faster and once out their curse will be a huge benefit to the sky claws. This would be a lethal first strike list if you can get first turn but its vulnerable to large mobs and heavy overwatch.

But you will get people into close combat quickly and swarm them with attacks. I think I shall call it...Thunder of Fenris.

After poring over 220 pages of ETC lists, I found two to be pure Space Wolves and both were variants of flyer spam.

Both lists featured Logan, RPs with JP, WGBLs with JP and then 3-4 flyers. One list used 4 Stormfangs with stormstrikes and multimeltas while the other had 3 stormwolves with lascannons and multimeltas.

I'm assuming logan teleports down to support a round of shooting for the flyers. The priests increase survivability through storm caller or tempests wrath.

The new FAQ made this considerably less desirable as flyers no longer count to prevent you being tabled. If all your non flyer models are dead you have been tabled. They did this to specifically combat flyer spam.

Tracking. I've pretty much abandoned the idea.
