Land raider tactica

The go to land raider seems to be the Crusader but what about the "old faithful" with twin las cannons and twin heavy bolter?

 

Properly supported, it makes one hell of a shooting platform vs vehicles and monstrous creatures.

 

Twin assault cannon Razorbacks deal with infantry while the Land Raider targets what it needs to.

 

A possible thought is filling it with a shooting unit with lots of melta (say Sternguard) and drive closer to a vehicle (or 2) you really want to destroy.

 

How would you build an army around the land raider?

If you really want to be a pain with those godhammer pattern lascannons, stick chronus in there.

 

I'd be tempted to put dedicated assault troops in there, just to counter-charge if the enemy throws some chaff at your 300 something point beast.

 

What I'm curious about is how people have been faring with the Redeemer, it doesn't seem optimal, but those flamestorm cannons look like a lot of fun!!

Redeemer seems so vulnerable due to range combined with cost. Still a Land Raider of course.

 

The standard pattern Land Raider really puts hurt on opponents. 4 lascannons is a Devastator squad and 2 Heavy Bolters for back up again us just excellent. It's a Devastator squad and a half.

 

It's tough and can move and fire, so using it as a MBT works. In fact, nothing else in the game can match it as a MBT.

 

Which is funny as it's also a transport which means it isn't really an MBT. Being able to disgorge its cargo where they need to under fire is the icing on the cake.

 

Personally, I'd go for a cost effective Vanguard squad with a Relic blade Sergeant and the rest chainswords, backed up by a character (Chapter Champion, anyone?).

 

Moving up the table, unleashing hell with lascannons and then unloading a bunch of hardcases into an objective is just what the Primarch ordered.

 

Target priorities - anything big that needs a Lascannon or 4. Preferably something key that is a threat to your embarked squad and objectives takers.

At present I'm looking at running a tac squad (8) with a combi melta, melta and power sword backed up by a Techmarine with a combi melta.

 

Not much close combat (although the sgt and Techmarine are ok) but a fair few melta shots. I like the idea of a combat veteran biker squad and captain buzzing around outside to run interference.

I don't think the Tactical squad is too bad in close combat though. They hit on a 3+ which is so much better than previous editions. The Techmarine can give a bloody nose in a fight and with all the shooting before you charge it is actually fairly decisive.

 

Think you're onto a winner there.

I LOVE Landraiders in 8th. Fantastic

 

I often run one with Chronos, and two 5 man Tacs inside, each with a Combi Plas and Plasma.

 

Fantastic firepower, transporting two MSU units.

I just use mine to consolidate my deployments. I hate losing it in T1 though which happens more than I'd like. With an Aura buff it can do some serious heavy lifting. I'm starting to remove it from my lists. It's very hard using Primaris right now since they are all stuck on the table.

 

The Landraider is hopefully going to be strong going forward. The Repulsor will probably compete with this unit some day, but maybe not?

 

Right now I use mine with Centurions. I've always loved Centurions, and I pack an Apothecary or a Techpriest in there (if I have Guilliman I often look for a cheap HQ). This counts as one deployment for 3 units.

I'm planning on using a crusader in an upcoming game. Chronus will be in it and it will be transporting two 5 man tac squads, combi-plas and plasmagun, as well as a 5 man assault squad without jump packs armed with 3 plasma pistols and a chaplain with plasma pistol.

 

Idea is too just drop a plasma assault force off and have them clear objectives and so on, then the survivors can jump back in and do it all over again if needed.

The Landraider is a super high priority target.

It needs other high threat units around it or it will get focused on.

Agreed.

 

A Contemptor Dreadnought, perhaps some deepstrikers, a Rhino or 2... things id suggest to distract an opponent. Target saturation doesn't always mean you spam the same units but instead have multiple units that provide pressure simultaneously and that require similar weapons to deal with.

Let me know how it fares.

 

I like the idea of a two tri Lascannon predators providing extra firepower. Combined with x2 twin assault cannon Razorbacks and the biker unit I hope to give target headaches.

 

That leads to another question: how does the Stormraven compare to the Land Raider (another thread, perhaps?)?

I love the predator auto cannon, I just wish it were cheaper because it's only slightly less expensive than the twin las and (arguably) weaker vs vehicles and monstrous creatures.

Not really much reason to take a chronus less predator when you can take Contemptor Morris instead. BS2+ and an invulnerable save, and, eventually, Chapter Tactics. If you are going the lascannon route, that is.

 

And who doesn't have like five left over contemptors from their BAC boxes? <.<

I'm doing a Landraider with... Guilliman. That's going to be a pretty difficult target decision for my opponent, but I bet most take the Landraider out first. 

 

Also, I like the contemptor idea. I just did a batrep up with one... wow. You get lucky on some invulns and it could soak up some good firepower for the Landraider.

Now that the Terminus Ultra costs 400 points, have you given it a try? It packs the firepower of two Land Raiders in a cheaper package, though i suppose you trade the transport capacity.

My point still stands. Forge World is a niche not everyone plays or accepts.

A niche within a niche game? GW is posting articles about FW now on their main page, it cant get any more mainstream short of them putting the rules for the FW models in the codices.

 

Disregarding viable alternatives to your Lascannon needs is silly because theres one guy in your area who still gets his nose out of joint by prettier models is silly. DKoK, Elysians and the renegade models are all 100x better than the standard GW potato guardsmen.

I'm also coming around to idea of Chronus in the Land Raider (I'm slow sometimes...my wife says I'm slow all the time :)).

 

From what I'm seeing/ hearing, it seems as if las cannons are the "go to" weapons to break vehicles or monstrous creatures at range.

 

I think that a Stormraven and Land Raider combination could be a fantastic threat.
