Getting stuck in a bit of a Rut

So I've got a game lined up that will be somewhat competitive. I'm doing some testing with my Ultra's but this post is not Ultra specific.

Right now I'm stuck in a rut. I'm running Primaris and they are a hard fit right now without their vehicles out... they deploy poorly, and can't be consolidated into vehicles.

My 'rut' is that I'm relying heavily on an Aura character (CM,Calgar,Guilliman, etc) and Centurions in a Landraider. I'm using Plasma-blasters and cherry picking with Inceptors.

I can't seem to move away from this without getting in serious trouble vs. more competitive stuff.

The 'alternative' to my rut was starting to look more like this core group of units... except in a Stormraven! So basically a flying landraider.

I don't want to go the flyer spam route, and I'm just wondering what people are finding is making a good core for them? I can't seem to leave: Aura + Centurions. I consider this the 'core' of the army. What are you guys finding works as a core of points in your army to build on?

(for a while I thought of deep strike core units: Calgar/CM, Cats, Inceptors, but it has too many weaknesses. I went back to Aura + Cents).

My core has a bare bones captain, twin las + ml ven dreadand a 2 las, 2 plasma cannon dev squad. They get deployed later on in my deployment with good los to my opponents heavy hits and generally wipe it from the game in my turn 1.

Generally speaking i think the aura + a heavy weapon unit is a solid core to work with regardless of whether you take dev squads or cents.

I always liked Centurion models, but the reason I keep defaulting back to them is the unit with an Apothecary is just really hard to remove now. Also they remove cover saves which is a nice bonus.

I know rifle dreads are a big thing, and I do use the odd Assault cannon Razorback, but I guess the idea is you make a little fire base, put your aura dude in the middle of it, and that's the way it works for now.

Thats exactly it, as the rest of my list has some scouts for denying enemy area to deploy reinforcements, a predator with chronus, some tacs in razorbacks to grab objectives and then some flavour units.

I think so far in 8th with so many combinations being useful in one way or another once you've found one that works for your playstyle it can be difficult to change things up, i still havent used my stormtalon and i've played 6 games in 8th, its in my next 2k list just to try it out but it takes time to get through all the units that you own or want to try.

Centurions in a Raider with an Apothecary is a great thing to include in an army. These are going to be even better with our chapter tactic. Due to their slow speed they can be caught up in combat consolidations.

I really don't think Inceptors are worth it - at all. (They need a significant point reduction).

If Intercessors had transports or different deployment options they would be a solid troop choice. I imagine we'll be able to put 10 in a Repulsor?

Prot, I really think you should paint up your Sicaran. It's a really great unit, and it's VERY fast. That, and the Raider gives you great ranged firepower. I thought it was expensive at first but it performs well. You can even deploy it out of LOS and get to aura ranges turn 1 because of it's great mobility. Las Cannon sponsons are my preferred option.

That won't be quite as viable post Codex. You'll need to take a second detachment.

Mixing Imperial forces solves any issue but most people don't want soup lists.

Yeah, it works great. It's also a scary unit for opponents.

In one game I played it was destroyed on turn 1, however my Landraider and other key units were ignored.

I run mine with Las Sponsons and the standard Cannon. It deals lots of damage.

The guardsmen thing has been nerfed a bit too in the last FAQ. You only get one of those 4 special weapon command squads per officer now so it will be a significant jump in points.

Sicarians are frikkin awesome. I love using mine, devastated two leman Russes before a Shadowsword just barely put its tread around around a building giving it partial LOS and opened up on it.
