Flying with models

I'm not sure where this should go, so apologies if it's not here.

 

Anyway, my question is does anyone here have experience with flying domestic, in the US, with their models? I'm looking for tips, tricks, and advice (or a pointer to a general guide) so I don't go from "lovingly painted warband" to "pile of plastic pieces".

I have before.  I used to travel a lot for work and would take a part of my army any time I would have a chance to visit a local game store.   I used a Pelican hard case and lots of foam for my metal Sisters of Battle.  It's not cheap and weighs a ton but everything survived dozens of trips with no problems.

I've never done it, but I've been told by others to always, if practicable, carry-on your army  If the models are metal, you'll get some odd looks at the security check, but it beats the alternative.

I've heard stories of people flying with paints and the pots bursting in the cargo hold because it's not pressurized. I'd imagine taking them on as hand luggage would be the way to go, Airlines dont exactly have a stellar reputation for loading their planes carefully.

Hand luggage is a no go internationally.

If you have a metal power sword. Say good bye to you captain.

You can't even take a nail clipper in the cabin.

I travel between Hong Kong and the UK frequently.

Pack them in their normal carry cases. Then pack that in your hold luggage. Surrounded by clothes, they'll be fine.

Again if you try to take them carry on you run the risk of them not coming with you.

If you're USonian, try not to fly. Their throwers arent known for taking care of luggage. Everywhere else is absolutely fine.

Pots of paint dont explode due to cabin pressure. The hold is pressurized. They explode before or after the aircraft. Usually on the tarmac or as soon as they're removed from the pressurized hold.

Pots of paint explode due to being hermetically sealed at one altitude and transported to another without a pressure release valve. This is why camera cases and your model cases have pressure release valves too.
