So to make a long story short, while I have my Marines and my Gaurdsman. I am looking to start a Xeno Army. In particular Kroot. While I know Kroot leave much to be desired to say the least. I love the models. And how flexible the range in theory is. So thoughts on what Tau elements I could include without seeming too off theme.

Only real rule is Crisis Suites are a big no.

Weeeeell. With official models? You can obviously include Kroot carnivores, hounds, Krootox and the Shaper for a pure Kroot Merc army which would be VERY limited or....include anything you want for Kroot as a T'au auxiliary force. Oh and you'd always need an Ethereal, Fireblade or Commander anyway since the Shaper is unfortunately not a HQ choice but an Elite choice instead.

With converting regular units into Kroot units? Anything goes as long as you can pull it off properly and are creative enough with your explanation (although Drones would be rather hard I guess).

Vespids are gonna be Winged Kroot. And gonna use Ethereals as Master Shapers (conviently Kroot benefit from Ethereal abilities). I mean beside Vespid and Ethreal, I don't know any reasonable easy to do count as that exist in lore. So if their is something that Pathfinders or Drones could be/represent in Kroot fluff I'd gladly hear it.

Kroot Carnivores are basically already Pathfinder. A lightly equipped recon unit.

Markerlight isn't really what Kroot do and neither is being tanky so pretty much everything except for basic Infantry and Drones would be a real stretch on their fluff.

Firewarrior of any kind could be just better equipped/more buff Kroot tho.

If I were you I'd try to see where to recreate the units from the Kroot fandex.

I forget which WD#,but I made the Kroot riders myself a mounted unit with fleet ,but not stealth.

Kroot,Knarloc

Kroot Ox, for your heavy weapons.

Kroot

You are going to be infantry heavy, but it will be unique.

I'm doing the same and restarted a pure Kroot army for 8th edition.

Firstly you don't need any non Kroot units unless you want to. You can go battleforged without HQs you just get less command points.

Secondly if you can find the old FW Knarlocs they have said that they will be releasing rules for them online soon!

I've seen some great Broadside Counts As using Krootox with missiles/railguns and some armour.

And lastly I've recently started a FB group for Kroot (The Warsphere) to share any inspiration and cool ideas.

How exactly can you go battleforged without a HQ? All the detachments require at least 1 HQ.

The only detachment without an HQ would be the Auxilliary Support Detachment which costs CP to use but unfortunately you can't go below 0 CP so that would mean a maximum of three units.

Our read of it has been that you cannot go below CP but given that you total them you could indeed total to -9 for example and then just cap at zero.

Guess it may not be everyone's interpretation but I only really play friendly.

Alternatively I will just use some of the Shapers as ethereals too like others.

If you interpret it that way you'd ignore the -1CP at some point tho. Since there really is no difference between 0CP and -9CP so GW wouldn't have to clarify that you can't go below 0CP in the first place. ;)

But if it's only for games with your friends and you agreed with eachother to do it like that then it's fine. Just be careful to post something like that on forums without mentioning that it's a houserule.

Using Shapers as Ethereals couts-as of course works as well, tho might confuse opponents if you don't do some serious kitbashing to make them look way different than regular Shapers. But I think that's a pretty good idea for a Kroot themed army!

The easy way with Ethereals is to only use Shapers as them and not as normal ones. No confusion then.

Or even just using different ones (like the old games day one) as Ethereals and the rest as Shapers. Possibly even just modelling them on a drone would do I guess.

Then you'd leave out the re-roll 1s on to-wound roll of the actual shaper tho. ;)

Hence why I said an Ethereal-Shaper should look noticeably different from a regular Shaper.

Remember that this is not possible in matched play, because of the restriction of 3 detachments for games of up to 2000 points.

There is no such restriction. It's a suggestion for tournaments but no hard rule.

I would just model a shaper 'extra special' as the ethereal and Buy up as many Knarlocs as you can and modify them up to count as the bigger mecs.

You could do the big stealth suit and just paint the Knarloc in camo paints. Add on a few Kroot in like birds nests all over the Knarloc with different special weapons they have picked up in their campaigns. It would look amazing.

This gets harder with no Knarlocs available from FW anymore.

Besides I'll hold onto the ones I have and wait for their actual rules. I much prefer a Kroot army using kroot rules than lots of Kroot-Suits. Just doesn't seem to fit the fluff for them

To each his/her own. I'm hoping the Kroot get some love from GW so they can actually become more like the what they are described as being, maybe make the models 2W each and allow them to heal wounds on a 6+ for each enemy model slain in melee.

Well said. Completely agree.

Even if I'm not planning any Kroot-Suits for my army I still enjoy seeing the creativity and great work that others put into them. Any focus on Kroot is a win in my book.

I'm kinda hoping the upcoming Chapter Approved book will have a redo of the old Merc list. But I won't really expect it.

This would be really neat!

As long as they don't keep the rule that Tau can't ally with them because they're a secret.
