Which Dreadnought to take?

Full disclosure: I love dreadnoughts. In 8th they are even better. But which one is best.

For me: venerable for the 2+ BS and WS. And I like them better for BT just because.

That said, I'll be picking up a Redemptor Dread in a couple of days because they look frikkin' awesome.

I've been using a Venerable Dreadnought, BS2+ it's huge and not degrading even more.

Liked double twin autocannons if you have an opponent not likely to drop you, otherwise a Twin Lascannon and Fist which also works as babysitter for another shooty tank.

Best model in my army by far, would add more if i had them as I want to retire my Las Predator, BS3+ and takes too much heat with less cover capabilities.

I like the visual design of the new dread and it is a good short range heavy bolter firebase being able to kick out 18 S5 -1ap shots between the two onslaught weapons.  But it is simply a increased wound count normal dread for the most part subject to degrading during the battle.  Lots of extra little weapons but no special rules and only t7 starting at 140 points.  Still better than anything chaos can get.

The Ven dread had done well for me in my games.  They are not that amazing for survival but very reliable on the shooting and CC.

I may be buying a new ironclad as T8 to me is key as now all S4 and lower weapons need a 6 to wound as that is one of the major weaknesses of the other T7 dreads.  That hammer is a static 5 damage but a minus 1 to hit with.  As we don't drop pod our dreads now I was considering getting one with a hurricane bolter as walking fire support.  Also it has gone down by 40 points in the new codex.

The normal dread had the best range support system with the rifleman build 2 twin auto cannons coming in at a cheap 136 but all auto options for dreads have been removed in the new SM codex as they are not included in the kits.

I'd say vernerable or ironclad are the best. Venerable because you get the enhanced stats the chance to ignore damage and the good ranged options. Ironclad because it crunches things and is more durable with it's extra T. Plus it has assault launchers and can take HK's as well. Finally the hurricane bolters are finally useful as having 2 CCW isn't as huge of a deal anymore with all the other buffs we can get for re-rolls.

So for the new Ironclad we are looking at 80 + 48 for hammer + 17 for melta because I don't like flamers and 4 for a hurricane bolter.  So 149 before you consider if you want hunter-killer missiles.

A Ven dread with twin LC for 182 has been very good to me in my games.  They die fairly fast but do solid damage output and force people to focus on them.  Plus people do get pissed when your Unyielding Ancient roll works.

Hmmmm did I miss it they list iron clad assault launchers as something you can take vs just being a rule they have but I don't see points value listed in the back?

That dreadnought combat weapon (still using index numbers, btw) is brutal! I know they all get that, but it's so good!

Ok, maybe it has been a long day but do you mind expanding on that and clarifying what you said?

Like the dread CC weapon is still 40 points and X2 S -3AP 3D?

Exactly. Don't know if that's different in the codex. But the x2 means roll 2s most of the time and 3 damage per wound has been lethal.

I've played tllc/tac ven. Dread. As fire support platform vs light And heavy vehicles. With s7 on twin Ac you make damage on most vehicles on 4+ And with twin lc on 3+. Both 48" range. My captain was beside him So he always hit's. That is huge. And it's cheaper than 2xtlc.

That was just 500 points game.

In larger games i'll Das some dev's or maby another Dread With castellan nerby. I think that re-roll 1 to wound is better on 2+ hitting Dread than re-roll 1's to hit. What you think?

P.s. Do anyone knows some good TLAC bits? And TLLC?

Leviathan Relic dread arriving via Storm Raven - points investment for sure but oh throne the firepower!

Grav bombard cannon d3 shots str9, ap-5, 2 damage, if targeting infantry an extra d3 shots per 5 models in the unit! If targeting monsters or vehicles increase damage to 5! These things can outshoot Knights with ease for much less points. Also t8 with 2+/4++.

Chaplain dread is also very good as a character.

My tournament winning mate believes firmly that the contemptor is the best dread from a pure gameplay perspective. Having said that, he hasn't had the opportunity to analyse the point drop from the ironclad.

Relic contemptors are so adaptable, and the FW imperial fist contemptor has enough templar imagery on it to fit :D

Main arms - fists, chain fists, c-beams, heavy bolters, assault cannons, multimeltas, lascannons, autocannons, lascannons.

Fist weapons - storm bolters, heavy flamers, plasma blastguns, graviton guns.

What do you prefer?

What do people think abotu the deredeo?

More on the modelling Aesthetic, which one would be better? FW IF Contemptor Dreadnought, FW Relic Contemptor Dreadnought, GW Contemptor Dreadnought...

as you can see I am pondering my next type of Dreadnought :tongue.:

The Imperial Fist Contemptor has a big IF symbol on the chest. If you can remove that it'd work pretty well. It even has a Templar cross on its left leg.

The Relic Contemptor is a more generic, non-Chapter specific, variant. If you don't mind the giant Aquilla on the chest then it could be a good fit.

The plastic Contemptor is trash. The static pose is an absolute killer.

Personally I'd go with either the Imperial Fist or Death Guard Contemptor. The Death Guard Contemptor is pretty free from Legion specific detail and with a few added Templar bits it could look great :tu:

Even better, get a Leviathan. It's such a fantastic looking mini.

Unfortunately, i have the plastic. I'm ok with the static pose. The lack of optional bits is what shocks me. I guess the new model lines spoiled me with tons of bits leftover from every box, but not him.

I think it has a extra gun arm, that's it nothing else. And without carving up the model you can't even change the head.

The plastic contemptor's a snapfit easy to build with next to no poseability or options, as were the two characters in the same box. Since it's being sold sepperately now it really should come at a much lower price than it does.

Forgeworld's contemptors is perhaps my all time favourite kit (i have five) and I highly recommend one at some point. Or a Leviathan, can't go wrong with those either

Very nice we now have GW prime review and thoughts, FW options and deployment options and model talk.

So depending on what your normal play groups allow and use most people can choose what will fit them best.  If you area does not use FW you have the GW prime details and if your area is open to FW rules you have some very powerful options to deploy.

Also for those people that are not playing much right now and just want to build and paint some kits are much nicer and dynamic than others.
