Non-primaris marines

Perhaps I have become too cynical, but I don't trust GW where primaris marines are concerned. I think that the goal is to make us replace all of our miniatures and that while they are "in addition to" units in this edition, they will be "instead of" in the next.

Does anyone know if they have committed to still releasing new models in the original size or will all new models be primaris size?

Are any of the other armies changing size? What about all of our special characters?

I don't like the look of primaris marines as much as the older models and really enjoy our ability to mix and match bitz for fluff reasons such as using all Mark V helmets for Raven Guard.

I know that i am hardly unique in questioning everything done by GW. I also know that I am hardly the only person feeling burned by the Warhammer > Age of Sigmar transition. I have started this as a separate topic because I want to know what people have heard without pissing on the primaris parade for those excited about the new models.

PS - I do hope they keep releasing primarchs. I really like them bringing back Guiliman and Magnus and hope they keep it up.

Treat old marines like old models. Try to remember how long it has been between the original multi-part plastic Tactical Squad designed by Jes Goodwin in 3E or so, and when it was updated in 2013 (barring re-cuts). Ork Boyz and Chaos Space Marines never even got an update. The Land Raider and Rhino plastics are still in their original, first form since they came out after Rogue Trader.

Just treat the old marines like these units. Just because they won't get updates for a long time, or ever, doesn't mean they suddenly can't be used or don't exist.

Both are actually in their 2nd form.

The current Land Raider came out in 2000 replacing the RT era original that GW had stopped selling in the mid 90s.

The Rhino came out in 2002 replacing the RT version which was still on sale up to that point :)

I wouldnt commit an opinion either way at the minute, primaris are a way of taking the universe of 40k in to a new place setting and gamewise.

Would it be great for GW to keep supporting old marines of course but to get to a place where they could do that they had to shake up the setting first, G-man was needed for the codex to be altered, Cawl was needed to show that the Ad Mech will and may continue to develop new tech.

As we all saw what happened with the attitude from the community when centurians arrived with a 'by the way your chapter has always had this but your only finding out now', so in those regards a story able to progress may bring some great things but only time will tell.

They have added a Marine Lieutenant to the new Codex. Whether he'll get a model or not is unkonwn, but it's a new unit entry for standard Marines at least.

As you can only see the head, which GW said were interchangable between old and new, and the armour is so bulky it wouldnt be a far stretch for the imagination.

In general i was just making a size comparison.

You can see all of the Marines legs from behind. Have a look at the 360 here. It'd be fairly obvious if you had the models side by side that the Marines inside Centurions are too small to be Primaris.

Didnt know this, as i didnt buy them or give them that much attention, so i assumed the leg armour fully wrapped around so my bad.

When I first heard this question raised (when primaris were first shown) I thought that they might be trying to do a total overhaul. But now we've see the codex, it's actually changed my perspective. All the new primaris models seem to have to choose between bolter and plasma weapons. Captains have no options. Theres only one transport that can hold primaris marines. Wheres the variety?

I think that in the long run, games workshop wants us all to have primaris somewhere in our armies, and in moderation they will be great. Conversely, an all primaris force just wont have enough bodies on the field to be efficient. We need to add the variety somewhere, and our older units are a total must for that versatility. At the end of the day, we all still want meltaguns, sterguards, vanguard, landraiders, cheaper dreadnoughts, razorbacks etc in our lists, and if GW wanted us to ditch our old marines, they would have made these all readily avaible to primaris in this codex.

TL;DR: Primaris are the shiny new big sword, and the old marines are the reliable swiss army knife. Any soldier worth his salt would take both to battle if he could, and GW knows that too.

Or at least, thats how I feel about it. I hope I'm right.
