Base, Base, Base, Base, Base-Knowledge! (Wooden Bases)

Recommended Posts

Hey there,

Sorry for the odd title, I just remember the phrase from some YouTube video!

I just gone done with about 2 hours or so of painting, and what slow painting it was - I'm a novice still, even after all these years! I tend to pick up and put down painting/modeling like a yo-yo, so forgive the horrible mistakes, haha.

I thought I wanted to get some Wooden Plank bases done for my Space Marines (yes, Space Marines on Wood) because they're a more Naval-Themed chapter, and I like to think this is the faux-deck of a boat.

This was a little bit of experimentation for me, so I'll be doing more in the future (maybe tomorrow, but if not then next week); I tried a few different styles of wood to see what would come out nicely, and to be honest I think they're all "ok" in their own way... but I'm still leaning on the darker wood over the lighter wood.

Also, I think layering black around the boards was a mistake. It works on some, but not on others, so I may even go to making a different brown colour for the base-bottoms themselves next time to see how that goes.

Also, I'm sure I could skip some steps in each base, but as I said I'm a novice painter (especially with bases), so this is all trial-and-error for me.

Bases from Left to Right:

1) Chaos Black > Graveyard Earth Wet-Drybrush (if wet-drybrushing makes sense) > Bestial Brown Drybrush > Bubonic Brown drybrush (light).

2) Dheneb Stone > Ogryn Flesh Wash > Graveyard Earth (trying to be careful not to go too deep into the cracks) > Vermin Brown (possibly too much) > Scorched Brown into cracks > Vermin Brown Drybrush (to make sure the scorch isn't on the main wood too much).

3) Khemri Brown > Vomit Brown Drybrush > Vomit Brown Wet-Drybrushed > Bubonic Brown Wet-Drybrushed.

4) Middle (not on Ruler) - Done a week before 1-3 & 4-7. I actually still think this is the best one sadly!

5) Adeptus Battlegrey > Devlan Mud Wash > Bestial Brown Drybrush > Bleached Bone Drybrush > Bubonic Brown drybrush (light).

6) Calthan Brown > Gryphone Sepia Wash > Scorched Brown (into main cracks) > Badab Black Wash (slight).

7) Skull White > Badab Black Wash > Bubonic Brown Wet-drybrushed > Badab Black Wash (cleaning up white holes, could be more careful with the first stage wash, and even do darker) > Vomit Brown wet-drybrush > Badab Black Wash (more neatening, but also getting a light wash over some boards).

Hope you like the look of them. Have a good one all!

Cheers,
Jupiter

i really like Numbers 2 & 7 the most, they would be the choices i'd go for...what colour are your Marines?...as in would light or dark wood suit them....

cheers,Mithril

++EDIT++ my bad, i see your army is called the "Crimson castellans"... red....Hmmm

Cheers guys, working on my next set of practice-bases now with different Foundations.

I'm also considering adding splashes of wash and small painted on parts to look like water, blood, or other forms of liquid, so they're not so static. I'm just afraid that if I do it'll be an "Ooops, now it looks like garbage!" situation.

To answer your question in a bit longer detail mithrilforge, the army is Red for the most part but it's not entirely 100% canonical Castellans; as before they updated them with their actual Black Library Novel I had my own backstory worked out for them; with them being a more Naval Fleet Chapter, which involved a number of water-worlds. So I thought it'd be fun to have wooden bases as just a fluffy-addition.

Cheers guys, working on my next set of practice-bases now with different Foundations. Will update this with the full image and paint list tomorrow when they're done, sorry for the WIP pic in this forum. will be removed once done by the end of tomorrow.

suggestion- don't go overboard (ha ha! see what i did there unintentionally i might add) with choosing bases, they help the mini, don't waste too much of your precious time on it (god knows we all make these mistakes fiddle-faddling around on minor things when we should just pick a decent yet simple scheme and then punch em out...isn't that why we're here...getting feedback from like minded hobbyists to help us decide on our right direction to head.

Add those special things to your characters and perhaps Sarge's only, again too much time wasting on a lot of core troops, the bases will look good even if they're plain decking...not every model need to be a Golden demon entry(even though that's what we want our army to look like  )

And that is a great idea, adding a distinctive yet simple idea will create some character and theme to your force.....

with that nautical idea in mind you must simply try to include some harpoons or anchors as close combat weapons on any assault guys you do :pirate:  yarrrrr! or a power sword cutlass for your Cap'n

Hope your army kicks off real soon and you get it done!!

Cheers, Mithril

Thanks for the feedback!

It has been noted... and somewhat ignored (because I already started my washes before seeing your reply).

1) I get bored painting batches of guys, which is why I mainly just do individual character units, so when I do eventually bite the bullet and make squads then yeah they will all pretty much have the same base-color per-squad, so part of this base testing now is a little bit of "which looks good on a special, and which looks good on a basic dude" and a little big "God I love painting wood for no reason!". So I do see what you mean about wasting time and fiddle-faddling!

2) Completely agree, as I said above I'm not going to give each model an individually detailed base. I'll likely collect feedback, make some test pics of characters and units with the different color bases, and see what I end up going with.

3) Harpoons are something I've considered (even one of my Captains is called Ahab, searching for his White Whale... which is a special Tyranid Model that destroyed his first unit), and I've started getting more cutlass and fancy sword options to keep at their sides, as they are still Astartes so they have to still be practical. I even bought some Tempestus Scion Greatcoats (Overcoats? Whichecver.) for them to try and fit over their power armor but they look a little small, so I may be toying around with those.

Good on you for the boat joke, I see what you did there!

Washes were just done, and I did go a little odd with some like I said - like some Leviathan Purple, Azuremen Blue, etc. Just waiting for them to dry before I do the first coat of normal paint.

Bases from Left to Right (numbering is to keep in line with original bases, and I've numbered the bottoms for reference):

8) Tallarn Flesh Foundation > Thraka Green Wash > Space Wolves Grey > Rotting Flesh Wet-Drybrush > Devlan Mud Wash > Camo Green Drybrush > Thraka Green Wash (mainly cracks).

9) Astronomicon Grey Foundation > Leviathan Purple Wash > Desert Yellow Drybrush > Vomit Brown Drybrush > Ogryn Flesh Wash > Elf Flesh Drybrush (too much) > Badab Black Wash (mainly Cracks).

10) Knarloc Green Foundation > Asurmen Blue Wash > Dark Flesh Wet-Drybrush > Bleached Bone Drybrush > Asurmen Blue Wash > Bleached Bone Drybrush > Asurmen Blue Wash (mainly cracks, dulling the Bleached Bone).

11) Necron Abyss Foundation > Devlan Mud Wash > Bestial Brown Wet-Drybrush > Bubonic Brown Drybrush (perhaps too much) > Thraka Green Wash > Rotting Flesh Drybrush.

12) Tausept Ochre Foundation > Baal Red Wash > Kommando Khaki Wet-Drybrush > Snakebite Leather Wet-Drybrush > Gryphonne Sepia Wash (Twice) > Bubonic Brown Drybrush > Gryphonne Sepia Wash (to darken cracks and a little wood).

13) Hormagaunt Purple Foundation > Badab Black Wash > Scorched Brown Wet-Drybrush > Vermin Brown Wet-Drybrush > Thraka Green Wash (mainly cracks, dulling the Vermin Brown).

14) Mechrite Red Foundation  > Gryphonne Sepia Wash (2x Coats as I put one on too early, Red wasn't completely set) > Dark Angels Green (Overpowered the Red too much) > Graveyard Earth Wet-Drybrush > Dwarf Flesh Drybrush > Badab Black Wash > Graveyard Earth Drybrush > Thraka Green Wash (mainly cracks).

I'm still terrible at actual drybrushing layers, and wet-drybrushing (wet-brushing?) often puts too much paint on, knackering things up but makes it faster. Still more experimentation needed... and I think my more Wood-Coloured bases in the first batch were definitely better than these.

i like 4 and 6  , i also like number 2 but that seems to say wild west to me :biggrin.:  and 6 is just a nice brown...

4 really feels like a dirty weathered/sea splashed deck though.

Cheers fellas, pretty much read my mind on the whole thing - I'm not to happy with this batch but 4 & 6 are the better ones.

2 feeling Wild-West... I like that thought! Maybe if I ever do a Western-marine I'll put him on the base.

I'll possibly do a batch 3 this weekend (I say weekend, for me that's Wednesday to Friday) and try the more traditional colors again, but with some alterations. I do have my Librarian to finish (post in the WIP section), and I may do him instead of bases. Oh who finds the time!
