The clapping shall go on for another hour. Have the first one who stops clapping brought out and shot.

Before this day is ended, mankind shall grovel helplessly at my feet -- and, as fate has obviously ordained -- Narthan Dume shall be Master of Earth!

A whole new universe here?

Begone, lackey! Dume shall be Master of the Universe!

Dolt! Dume cares not for copyrights. How can anyone take a hero named "He-Man" seriously? Although Skeletor is cool.

Very well. Dume shall choose an army, and  then it shall be Dume's Day!

Thank you, WarriorFish.

I received a few friendly challenges at my FLGS, so who am I to refuse?

Having been the DM/GameMaster always challenging my players, they want me on a level playing field.

They've played 40K before and I haven't. It's a new edition, so it seems only fair. My friends play Chaos, Eldar, Orks, Space Wolves, and Tau.

Any suggestions?

Welcome aboard!

Suggestions, well.... I would suggest taking a look at the models and see which ones you like the most. Since you are going to spending a lot of time and money on them, it would behoove you to actually like the models aside from their rules.

Vanilla Space Marines are going to offer, IMHO, the most flexibility for a new player to build their first army. They have a huge selection of models, and the codex just dropped so you should be all set for using them. I would suggest searching the B&C site for Index Astartes thread to get an idea for chapter color schemes. There are a large number of them there.

And did I mention Primaris Marines? I didn't? Well they are the new hotness, and they are pretty cool. And a GREAT jumping on point for a new player. :D

I hope this helps.

My suggestion is that, with the new edition largely levelling the playing field, play what you like. Fancy the look of Dark Angels? Go for it. Tau? Why not? Orks? They have a certain charm about them. Whatever tickles your fancy, try that out first and see if it sticks. ;)

Welcome to B&C, brother. :tu:

Thank you, I appreciate the advice, Sugarlessllama and Olis.

I briefly considered starting one of the armies my friends play, but they know more about their own armies than I do right now. It may be a tactical disadvantage, but it would also be fun to beat them with their own army. Sorry, it's the evil player side in me. However, I'm not planning to build four different armies just yet. I have a month to build and paint my army. My opponents don't mind if my army is painted or not, but I do. They will be readying their existing armies and battle lists. They want me to put a 1,000 to 2,000 point list together.

Many of the models look great for all of the armies. For ease of learning, I may choose space marines. They appear to be one of the standard baselines of the game, and I admit that armored knights have a certain appeal to me. I'm not sure about primaris, as I hear much grumbling about them -- but my friends grumble about me, so it could be par for the course.

I have started browsing the Astartes, Chaos, and Xenos areas of this forum. Slowly and surely, I will draw my plans against my enemies. msn-wink.gif

8th is a good time to start, with a much simpler rules system. As mentioned the best advice is to pick the army you like best - rules come and go but models and lore is forever (or mostly in the latter's case!).

Sounds like you might be interested in Chaos Marines perhaps ;) If so the new codex might whet your appetite when it arrives next week but there's no rush to decide it's a big decision after all :P

All of the models have their appeal, ranging from fantasy to sci-fi vibes with Eldars/Orks to Necrons/Tyranids.

Space marines seem to be part of the same coin, daemonic/knights. One man's Chaos is another man's Order, eh? I'm going to order the new space marine codex and probably the chaos marine codex when it's available. I purchased the rule book this past weekend, so I'm trying to learn the basics and order of battling for now.

I admit to being tempted to have a small army of each 'faction' eventually, but I will start with one army at a time. I will. One army. Really. Just one.
