1st Company club - including Calgar Wings

The veterans of the B&C will recall discussion in the past amongst those noble sons of the Great Primarch in this forum where we talked about taking a 1st Company force of Ultramarines on the table.

Past editions meant we had to use special scenarios or take count as Deathwing to use an all 1st Company list, but 8th edition has changed that.

So without further ado, let's hit it!

Show us your 1st Company force, your experiences on the table and what you think is a good composition of an Ultramarines 1st Company.

Units I consider to be best suited to theme:

- Terminators of all varieties

- Sternguard

- Vanguard

- Dreadnoughts

- Land Raiders

- Storm Ravens

- Captains

- Terminator characters

- Calgar

Of course, non-Terminator characters could be included but aren't quite theme heavy. Likewise, when the new Codex comes out the non-Terminator Captain could be dropped for a Lieutenant (shame he can't have Terminator armour but he can run with the Sternguard).

My own preference is to have a solid core of 1st Company warriors who can really survive everything the enemy can throw at them. I feel that an army mostly of Terminators is the way forward as it enables you to have something other armies don't really have.

2+ save, invulnerables and 2 wounds.

I'd go with a large unit of Cataphractii Terminators (8-10) and Captain supported by several smaller units of Indomitus Terminators with heavy weapons. I'd also take a few Dreadnoughts for more heavy weapons.

There is scope for some Sternguard and Vanguard but points will be tight. A Sternguard for objective holding, in a Rhino, will provide a nice bit if variance for the army and Vanguard can launch an attack in much the same way as any other army and carve through cheaper units that might bog down our Terminators.

I'd like to teleport Terminators in to put pressure on opponents immediately. The big unit supported by 2 smaller Terminator squads.

Special mention to Calgar who can teleport with a unit and provide decent bonuses and a solid combat character.

***

I'm toying with the idea of 2 large units of Cataphractii. They ain't going down easy and look AMAZING.

Hiya Folkes,

I play ultramarines 2nd company, but I am getting close to having a full 1st company as well.

First off, I do not paint or assemble models my self, all work is done by Adam Smith, a commision painter in the UK.

Since the photo in the link below was taken, my first company have grown with 20 models (10 Sternguards and 10 Vaguards)

Right now I have the following:

Captain Ageman

1 Librarian in teriminator armour

1 Chaplain in terminator armour

2 Squards of 5 assault terminators (1 squard hammer+shield, 1 with a mix)

6 Squards of 5 terminators (2 squards with assault cannons, 2 squards with heavy flamers and 2 squards with cyclone launchers)

2 squards of 10 sternguards (mixed weapons)

2 Squards of Vanguards, 1 5 man and 1 10 man (mixed weapons)

total : 75 man + leadership

Very nicely done too. Adam is talented.

Have you any games with it?

I been thinking about the Stratagems and (including our Ultramarines specific one) we can cause some serious grief with a 1st Company list.

Sternguard benefit from a specific Strategum. Can't remember the name of it but they can have an additional -1 AP on a 6 (hit or shooting I can't remember). They also benefit from the Ultramarines specific one and the Hellfire one.

Naturally Terminators also benefit from those Strategums bar the Hellfire one.

Our strategic numerical deficiency is offset now by less of a need for characters. We can plug points into units and still get rerolls now.

Not since 6th edition.

Just pre-ordered the new codex and will try to get a few games going as soon as I can.

From what I have seen from batte reports, 8th is pretty vicious and there is high casualties.

I am afraid of what that means for specialized armies, like 1st company with terminators, grey knight paladin/terminators etc. What I mean is, if you have a few bad dice rolls, you might never recover.

But, it needs to be tested I suppose. Probably going to start a campaign with a friend, Ultramarins vs. Tau.

I'll wait until codex release before playing 1st company.

That being said, I have 40 terminators and 60 veterans, so my first company is complete (and unpainted). One day...

I do play second company. With Sicarius probably lost in the warp (I do hope he made it into the codex!) I considered playing 1st company. I have a huge collection of terminators and veterans, so I'm able to play the best of the best.

I will provide a pict of my assembled first and will give them a try in our next games. :)

You were going to get a like but you said they're unpainted so it's a neutral response :p

Currently, my 1st Company consists of:

Captain Agemmon (the Terminator Captain model) fully painted including his livery: no decals used

A second Captain in Cataphractii Armor from Betrayal at Calth (my "Lieutenant") fully painted and decaled

A Librarian in Indomitus armor fully painted including his livery: no decals used

A Command squad with Champion and Apothecary in power armor (because Terminators can't be a command squad post 4th edition) fully painted and decaled

10 man squad of battleline Terminators in Indomitus armor (1st squad) fully painted

10 man squad of Sternguard (2nd squad) fully painted and decaled

10 man squad of close support Terminators in Indomitus armor (3rd squad) half fully painted and decaled, the other half mostly painted - need some highlights and decals

10 man squad of Sternguard (4th squad) fully painted and decaled

5 man squad of battleline Terminators in Tartaros armor from Forgeworld (5th squad) fully painted and decaled

5 man squad of Vanguard (6th squad) fully painted and decaled

5 man squad of Vanguard with jump packs (7th squad) fully painted and decaled

5 man squad of Vanguard (8th squad) mostly painted need highlights and decals

10 man squad of Sternguard (9th squad) half fully painted and decaled, the other half basecoated

5 man squad of close support Terminators in Cataphractii armor (10th squad) fully painted - need squad marking decals

Eventually, the 5 man squads will be 10 man squads. I'll take pictures when I get the chance and upload.

  • 2 weeks later...

Digging through my numerous unpainted models I found myself with a metal terminator Calgar, a librarian in terminator armour, and several squads of terminators.

I like the idea of building a 1000 point core list, then adding models in 500 point blocks, I've decided my first 1000 points will be a Vanguard detachment led by Calgar. Of course that's not a lot of terminators, but it cuts down on painting I suppose.

Calgar in terminator armour

5 Terminators, cyclone, chainfist

5 Terminators, cyclone, chainfist

5 Assault Terminators, 5 thunder hammer and storm shield

That leaves me with 40 points left.

I think the next 500 points will add the Librarian, terminator armour, combi-plasma, and perhaps a couple of Venerable Dreadnoughts.

A land raider to transport those assault terminators could bring a nice element to your list, a crusader for anti horde or godhammer if you want ranged anti-tank depending on the set up you choose for your dreadnoughts.

Oddly enough i have a similar building project underway, only difference is one of my terminator squads has an assault cannon.

It's the same problem that a Deathwing or Grey Knight Terminator army suffer from. The models are cool, but there are so few of them. At least terminators are a little more durable than they used to be. On the other hand, even AP-1 affects them now, so there's a "swings and roundabouts" factor. At least Calgar is cheaper than he used to be, although ironically (since the Index was the last set of rules for him) Calgar in artificer armour is more expensive than his terminator form.

A couple of Venerable Dreadnoughts with lascannon/missile launcher would add some desperately needed heavy weapons.

Based on the models I have, a Librarian in terminator armour with combi-plasma and force axe (converted from a staff with a Space Wolver terminator axe head) veil of time and psychic fortress (smite is the enemy of terminators), with two dreadnoughts with twin-lascannon and heavy flamer brings the total to 1488 points.

Two characters in terminator armour, two dreadnoughts, and fifteen terminators at 1500 points. I haven't fielded armies that small since 2nd edition.

I've always loved the image of a full first company force fielded in game. I tried it a few times in 7th using the 1st Co Task Force formation but it was a struggle without the support offered by my 2nd company guys.

I have noticed though my 8th Edition armies seem to be getting more and more 1st Co guys sneaking in. Maybe beacuse I have amassed so many more.

Currently fully painted:

Marneus Augustus Calgar

Honour Guard

Masters of the Chapter who now get used as 1st Co Lieutenants

Captain Severus Agemman (Terminator Captain)

Terminator Chaplain

5 Tactical Terminators

5 Assault Terminators

20 Sternguard Vets

5 Vanguard Vets

2 Venerable Dreadnoughts

Land Raider Godhammer Pattern

Land Raider Crusader Pattern

and I currently have 10 more terminators nearly finished, the Land Raider Excelsior and Command Rhino Primaris

...then I still have to build another 10 terminators, another 5 Vanguard Vets, Tyrannic War Vets, and a further 10 Sternguard.

And I'm not counting Tigurius, Cassius or Chrous because they don't really count as 1st Co, being part of the Chapter HQ

it grows and grows, I will try to remember to get what is finished out later for a group photo for you guys.

Edit:

I forgot I also have a further 10 man HQ unit built with Ancient, Apothecary, Champion and ablative wound guys who will be painted as 1st co Sternguard vets to accompany a Ltd Edition Captain who will be Agemman out of his Terminator plate (yes I know the lore says he rarely removes it even outside of combat but it would be appropriate for the captain of the first to have retained his power armour, most likely artificer, for use where the situation necessitates its deployment as per the Codex, as Agemman is known to be firm believer in the tenants of the writings of Guilliman).
