It's a really easy scheme;
Prime black.

Give it a quick coat of watered down black paint.

Use Forge World Corvus Black and sort of give it a measy highlight (you can see what I mean looking at the Rhino WIP, which is at this stage).

Give the model a finer highlight using Mechanicus Standard Grey. Also, splodge a few bits here and there using this grey to simulate battle damage, paint chips etc.

Paint the trim using Leadbelcher (any datk silver will do; I tend to use Army Painter Gunmetal), and use this to paint a few fine highlights over the battle damage and edge highlights.

Give the silver trim a quick black wash, then apply a Ironbreaker highlight.

Paint the red using Khorne Red. Layer with Mephiston Red and highlight with Evil Sunz Scarlet.

Gloss varnish any areas that you're gonna apply transfers to. Apply said transfers and set with Micro Sol.

Gloss the whole mini. Leave to dry properly for a couple of hours.

Apply a very heavy handed coat of AK Interactive brown panel liner oil. Leave to dry for 20 mins or so.

Dip a cotton bud into non-odour White Spirits and wipe the excess oil from the recesses. This can be a messy step, make sure you leave the oil in the recesses as this saves you having to have shaded the mini in prior steps and by dragging the cotton bud over the main areas, you leave a nice greasy film to add a little extra weathering.

Apply any weathering powders and give the whole mini a light blast of Matt Varnish.

 

I know it all sounds a rather laborious process but it's really easy and I managed to get the Rhino done in an afternoon. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for the paint recipe! It actually does sound like a fun way to paint the DA and it looks absolutely gorgeous. I actually have some AK Interactive washes but I haven’t even opened them yet. Looks like I’m going to get to use them sooner than I expected.

No worries! I used the Sand and Desert Camoflauge Panel Liner. Though it’s brown, it helps give that old, dusty look to it.

That’s even better info for me. I happen to have all of the AK Interactive weathering products specific to weathering German Afrika Korps including the sand and desert one specifically. I knew it would be useful for more than just 15mm WWII tanks when I bought it.

He looks great. The only suggestion I would make is to paint the rim on his helmet and maybe the nosebar a different colour, just to break it up. Silver would probably be best but it’s a very minor gripe and it looks great as is.

Aye, I tend to do that on all my marines! But for some reason my first tester always has the grill/nose in the standard armour colour.

 

I’m gonna add some red knee pads too. Just need to decide what to do for the bases now.

I think that one of the best things about Wolves is that (in the Heresy setting) they have some really good, thematic options for bases.

The ice/snow base is nearly ubiquitous and the Prosperine marble ruins are pretty close too. Both good, contrasting tones to the dark grey armour but it is nice to change things up from the “norm”.

 

It’ll be nice to see what you decide on.

 

Also, Dark Angels AND Wolves!?!? Must be some internal conflict there brother, resist all urges to duel with yourself.

Here’s my finished Huscarl for one of my Grey Slayer squads. Just need to finish the base but I’m fairly happy with him. I like incorporating some of the wolves bits from 40k, but not too much.

 

Next up, I’m gonna do the rest of the squad and then work out what I’m doing for a HQ. I’ll probably paint up Greigor, minus some of the overly wolfy bits I don’t like (head, backpack etc).

Well, I’m holding off the Grey Slayers briefly as I’m waiting for those glorious new upgrade kits. In the meantime, I’ve glued together and started basecoating Leman Russ and I’m gonna our together the Wolves contemptor.

 

In the meantime, here’s my completed Ixion Hale/Captain and a tester Custodes chap in the Warders of the Vaults of Rython scheme that I’ll be using for both 30k and now 40k. Not too sure if I want a brighter gold or not, but gonna do the other 4 members of his squad and see how I feel.

 

Also feel like I need to change the basing as well. I usually play on Grey/green boards, but find the grey bases blend too much in with the black armour.

Not the biggest fan of the new Termies so snagged myself some of the Aquillon Termimators instead, next thing on my paint table.

 

Also wasn’t happy about the gold on my tester so tried out one from the Scale Colour range which I much prefer, but brighter but still nonetheless weathered.

Back to work after another successful Heresy Weekender. Head off on the Orlocks till next week but did treat myself to one of my favourite Primarchs, Rogal Dorn. I also got far too much other bits and bobs to flesh out my Space Wolves and Custodes, as well as do some Imperial Fists.

 

I’m just a little unsure as to how to paint Dorn; I’m doing a mainly black scheme but do it do Dorn black as well or just a regular old gold? I’d just use the same gold as I have on my Custodes.

In between all my other projects, I’m currently working on some Fists Terminators and gonna make a start on my Grey Slayers squads.

 

My friend has given me Armillus Dynat so gonna do a tester for an Alpha Legion chap, though a little unsure what scheme to go for. I’m off the opine that I prefer to do Matt schemes, regardless of how good the Metallics look (mainly as I like to weather my minis and I have never had good results doing metallics).

 

Here’s the Terminators, pre-oil washed. They’re currently drying and then I’ll get to the White Spirits phase shortly.

 

Gonna make a start on Dorn too, annoyingly my Mephiston Red spray has ruined his cape so that’s currently being stripped, but will get straight onto the armour later today.

I was gonna go black, but then as I’m painting the majority of my Fists black, I don’t want him to blend too much into the army, so I’m going for a weathered gold instead.

Here’s the squad of Imperial Fists Terminators I’ve finished up. I know, it’s the somewhat divisive black scheme with yellow accents, but I much prefer painting black and I think the scheme works rather well. I’ve got another 5 plastic Cataphractii and shields I’m going to do next.

 

One thing I’m unsure of is basing; I was gonna do Grey slate but as they’re gonna be in the same force as my grey Space Wolves, didn’t want it all to blend in too much.

 

I’ve also made a start on Rogal Dorn. I’m half tempted to give him a helmet, as I’m vehemently against marines without them. I was thinking about the helm with the Laurel from the IF kit, but I’m not sure if it looks a tad...off. Just reminds me of the Black Knight from Monty Python (at one point, I was going to paint him black as well). Storm’s Teeth will be black, and his cloak red (once it’s been stripped after Meph Red spray ruined it).
