Opinions on Colour scheme and other stuff.

Hey there,

Now, I know my name isn't very 'ultramarine-y' but please hear me out. I've been a long term marine player, who moves from niche to niche. I started with blood angels, moved to iron hands and then to space wolves. I love all of them, I loved the rip and tear nature of blood angels and wolves, the cold calculating style of Iron Hands, however something was missing. There are small things I dislike about them all and I don't really like how non-uniform the Space Wolves are, or how linear the playstyle of the Iron Hands seemed to be (get tanks and crush things).

So, I thought I'd move to one of the most versatile chapters of the Space Marines, ultramarines. Unfortunately due to timing I've made this move right after getting crushed by my friends orks, after telling him about how the top tier marine armies include guilliman and TLAC Razorbacks I feel like he's going to think this is a cheesy move. He already despises the ultramarines too, do you guys ever get called out for playing them? Are you like me playing them for their versatility or is there another reason? Do people call you cheesy or publicly hate on your choice of ultramarines in a way that seems a bit more than the typical 'banter'?

I have a lot of primaris marines and I love them to be honest, however I didn't want to use them in my SW army cause they make all the other marines look like dwarves. So my plan was a UM spin off chapter or even a 'guard' for Guilliman or the like, based around 1st Company, using Primaris instead of Veterans. So a mix of Primaris units and terminators. My colour scheme is as follows:

Firstly please ignore the modelling mistakes, these were a test batch made probably late at night after a night out due to excitement. However have you got any constructive criticism on the scheme itself? My brother (an ultramarine player) recommended blue shoulder pads to tie them into the Ultramarines and then use a transfer over that. I was wondering if I should make them look clean or go for a more dirty and blooded look. However when it came to adding blood effect, them not having melee weapons made me wonder where I should add it. Also there are still some details to add like on the purity seals I know.

On another note, anyone that's doing a spin off company do you ever use any of the ultramarine special characters? Would it be cheesy for me to run Guilliman or Marneus with these guys? Would you think they should be the traditional colours or match the army itself?

I'm sorry if these questions seem out of place or don't fit here. I wanted to get a good grasp of everything and understand things. I worry people will think I'm only changing to ultramarines for the 'metaness' of them..

Thanks for help in advance guys.

Firstly, anyone who "hates" you for playing with blue toys as opposed to red, green or grey toys is a moron. Ignore them or just laugh at their stupidity ( let's be honest, they probably need to get a life).

Ultramarines seem reasonably strong but at one time (even now) wolves, both flavours of angels and grey knights were far more powerful. I'd also ignore cries of "cheese". What a stupid thing to say...especially in an environment of eldar, riptides, thunder wolf cavalry, etc, etc. every army has their strong units, more so in 8th.

Play the army you want, play the units you want...and smile as you crush your enemies and hear the Lamentations of their women...

The cheese thing is kind of annoying because he just switched to orks and in the last game, where my army was very un-optimised, I had no way ever of being able to kill anywhere near a decent amount of them. Yet when I mention the idea of getting some assault cannon Razorbacks it's cheesy or will just obliterate him :(

I'm going to be playing with them as ultramarines for sure, just figuring out how I'll use the special characters like Marneus (who I really like), whether as a 'count as' or use him as the actual person and say my chapter is like 'guards' or the like. Are Ultramarines actually that strong right now? I know Guilliman + Razorback spam is strong but that's not really the style I wanted to be fair. I like the lines of infantry working together and the like.

On another note do you think the colour scheme needs work? Should I add the blue shoulder pad to tie them into the ultramarines? I know the quality of the painting isn't great but it's something I'm trying to improve on.

I'd take assault cannon Razorbacks vs orkz for sure. At least 3. You need the mobility and protection of the vehicles. Foots logging marines will struggle unless you're just going to stand in a gun line. In which case you should strongly consider Guilleman for his buffs.

I'd highly recommend a storm raven ( fill with whatever you like) or a land raider crusader. A captain on a bike is a cheap HQ if you want to save points. Consider an ironclad with a heavy flamer.

Predator tanks will also be useful. Devastations with missile launchers are also good.

The colour scheme is entirely to taste. I prefer proper Ultramarines or one of their official successors ( there are lots to suit your taste - look around. Silver skulls have an easy paint scheme - silvery metallics and nuln oil wash = done).

My army is going to be comprised of mostly Primaris and Terminators as a semi-recreation of 1st company (Primaris instead of veterans) so I am unsure of how many razorbacks/stormravens I'll be able to use, or land raiders. I have a plan for the repulsor of course and I do have a bunch of devastators to use. Unfortunately I have one predator but it's the forgeworld one with the plasma load out so I don't think it's too useful vs orks. I do have some ironclads along with a bunch of contemptors with kheres assault cannons which would be handy.

I see what you're saying about colour scheme, I did look at silver skulls however it came off as very similar to my iron hands so I thought I'd do something a bit different instead.

My name isn't really "Ultramariney" either, in fact it's about as Wolfy as they get.  But I had to sell off my Wolves a couple years ago when I was out of work.  I played Crimson Fists in 7th (obviously from my avatar and sig caption) and still love them.

I'll be honest, I always scorned Ultramarines before.  They always seemed plain vanilla and I kind of resented that they always had their decals in the box and were on the covers, always had lots of chapter-specific upgrade bits and models.  When 8th came out, I decided to do an entire army of Adeptus Restartes, and realized I had the opportunity to make them any chapter I liked.  They don't have Kantor Blue in a spray can, and I realized that between that and the decals I could get an army ready for the table more easily if I did one of the main ones.

I love Dark Angels and Space Wolves but without the Codex, I can't be sure they won't make some of my Primaris models (like the Dreadnought or Repulsor) unavailable to them, and I wanted the benefit of the Codex that's already out.  Then I looked at the Ultramarines Chapter Tactics, Warlord Trait and Stratagem and I saw the light.  I realized why Guilliman is a strategic genius and saw how UM's can make best use of mobility without sacrificing firepower.

I'm looking forward to trying them out and it's motivating me to build my army faster as I don't have any old models to rely on.

Changing to Ultramarines has always felt refreshing to me because they've always been an army that in my eyes relies on tactics and more 'vanilla' of armies. This in my eyes actually makes them quite hardcore, with my space wolves you've got them on massive wolves and reliant on close combat or the like etc. Yet with UM you're stuck with vanilla marines and you have to think with each squad "How will this work with this, how can I optimise its' use." they've promoted me thinking about what I want to get into my army compared to what I need.

People might argue this isn't true anymore, UM's gimmick last edition was their rerolls and now they've got it back in 'full' with Guilliman. Yet this gimmick is meant to be, again in my opinion, a display of their tactical prowess. Honestly my brother has just sold all his UM to get death korps and this is why I've moved to UM. But it looks like I've moved to them because of the Guilliman being super strong and so on. In reality I'm looking forwards to using a very organised and tactic-based army.

I really like the chapter tactics in that there are a lot of situations I feel I can make use of it. I love reading the other tactics thread and looking at what people have come up with and the like. I like how in light of the command point skill that allows you to reroll hits, you can now do armies and potentially go against what the enemy might expect you to do - have a plan they won't know how to counter. In this I mean, most of my friends expect me to be putting all my army in a bubble around hq's etc but I can now bring deepstrikers to the mix and buff them with it. Also if you use regular terminators you could put their homing beacon next to your commander and pull them back for a potentially surprise rapid fire/assault cannons shots with rerolls or keep them where they are for the same thing with a CP...

I'm the same as you though. I've sold off all my old wolves because I don't have time to paint all that detail and I don't like squads that are essentially 'rabbles' I like things to be uniform. I played preheresy 40k for a long time and liked having squads full of the same thing. So primaris for me is like icing on the top since I can play them in 40k 8th edition and they're all similarly equipped...

Now just need to come up with some nasty combos that aren't just Guilliman and assault cannon razorbacks ;) I feel UM have always been the vanilla marines that rely on tactical genius to win and with smart use of CP in game you can now start to replicate that in game terms.
