Best unit for AL "Rewards of Treason"

Hi Everyone,

Question is in the title really, what does everyone think is the best unit for AL rewards of treason special rule?

For those who don't know this rule, it allows an Alpha Legion army to take another legion's unique units in an elites slot when using the coils of the hydra rite of war.

I ask because I'm getting to 3000 points and I'm thinking of some more interesting units I could add once I finish the main bulk of my army, I'm currently in the process of doing some justaerin but I think I'll do at least one more.

I was interested in people's opinions from a few different perspectives:

  • Rules wise what are the alpha legion not very good at that a specific unit could fix?

  • In terms of fluff is there any legions the alphas wouldn't steal units from? Either because they couldn't infiltrate them or had no interest to.

  • Models wise which units would look best in a mkIV heavy army? I plan on taking all of the previous parent legions markings off of any models, are there any units this would be easier on?

I'm really interested to see what other people think, I have a couple more options in my mind. I think shotgun armed mor deythan with 3 multi meltas would be interesting because they'd have the kit to deal with armour and infantry and are very much an alpha legion style unit.

It's not really a question that can be easily answered. For me any of the really good assault units are always handy due to that being a weakness of the AL, any of the 2 wound terminator units are always handy and I'm dying to try a unit of deathsworn.

It really depends on so many factors though, are you using the unit to plug a weakness or further enhance a strength? Does you opponent have weakness you are trying to exploit or a strength you want to combat?

I've actually not used a coils list for a while, they are fun at larger points values due to the novelty factor but once that wears off you realize chosen duty or potl are by far the perfect rites for AL.

Yeah, it depends on your list tbh. If you need something assaulty (which is an area AL are sometimes weak in), I'd recommend Firedrakes (2+/3++ with thunderhammers) or Justaerin (great overall rules). I don't think there are any units that the Alpha Legion would shy away from using, and pretty much everything can be justified fluff-wise.

Interesting, general consensus seems to be leaning towards combat orientated terminators and having bought some justaerin I'm fairly pleased with that.

Suzerians would be interesting but there is a hell of a lot of insignia that would be difficult to remove and if I'm honest a real shame, I've not really read the latest book what are the deathsworn?

Deathsworn are a Space Wolves unit with nasty forbidden bombs, power axes and artificer armour. Unless they're completely wiped out, they get to make all their power axe attacks in close combat for models that die before striking at their initiative step. It's a unit designed for mutually assured destruction.

If you're stealing Suzerain, you don't have to use the UM models at all. Could just convert boarding marines with enough bits to make them look more ornate.

This old chestnut, you can get plenty of discussion on the topic by scouring the AL tactic thread. The consensus reached is always the same.

Best melee unit to steal: Suzerain.

Best shooty unit to steal: Siege Tyrants.

Inferno didn't add Sekhmets to the list?

^Yeah, I have to agree. Same goes for Justaerin - they're a killer unit for Sons of Horus, but losing the +1BS from Death Dealers is a big negative.

Firedrakes are another really good melee unit. And I think Iron Havocs are a close 2nd for shooty unit of choice.

Firedrakes are a tarpit for enemy elite combatants, they make good bodyguard for a Primarch who can deal a lot of devastation, but themselves have too few attacks per point to be an offensive tool. Havocs are good but fragile as a high priority power armored unit. Really the Tyrants are probably best overall choice because they are very shooty and are still Cataphracts with power fists, and benefit well from most common mutable tactics.

Fulmentarus are crap when you consider their cost.  What is it, something like 20-25 points extra per model for BS5 and a marginal buff that degrades as they lose members?  No thanks.

They're certainly a touch overcosted to be like Siege Tyrants, but have some fun other uses.

Can do a fun thing with tank-hunting combi-meltas at BS5 though for something a little more unexpected. Also Tank Hunting Powerfists, or even Mauls to murder anything not AV13+ on the Rear.

Yeah, if youre using Fulmentarus as Siege Tyrants, you might be better served by taking Tyrants + Siege Breaker especially if youre going for a larger squad.

I think Fulmentarus could be interesting with autocannons in that rite that gives them BS2 snapfire.  Good for dealing with vehicles and decent vs. the typical fliers.  Not something you'd bring to a tournament, but 30K tournaments are an abomination and an affront to Saint Bligh.

How about deep striking a unit of Firedrakes int the opponents deployment zone turn one using Dynat (who is hiding in a 20 man infiltrating tac squad?

Deep striking the Firedrakes negates their somewhat poor mobility, you'll have them instantly where they need to be and act as a (expensive) distraction Carnifex while the rest of the army infiltrates on objectives/plays the mission.

They should be able to deal with anything in close combat, unfortunately they won't enjoy Dynat's sweeping advance bonus.

If you're going to DynatStrike something, do it with combis or tactical support units.

Hmm yes I'd say so, the rules state that "...they have the Legiones Astartes (Alpha Legion) special rule where this is relevant, not the Legiones Astartes special rule of thier parent legion."

Iron Cirlce say that "...units of Domitar-Ferrum class Battle-Automata may be joined by a single Independent Character with the Legiones Astartes (Iron Warriors) special rule..."

So all seems legit to me! Plus how cool is that, AL stealing some big bot plans from the IW!
