Thousand Sons Metallic BLUE Scheme

Hi all! I'm planning on starting up a Thousand Sons army soon and, although I am a big fan of their crimson color scheme from 30k, I am wondering if the same metallic effect could be achieved for their blue scheme in 40k. Any one have any ideas or suggestions please share! Thanks!!

Easy - just get a clear paint (e.g. Tamiya Clear Blue, Calth Blue from FW) and airbrush over a silver basecoat. For best results, airbrush highlights with a brighter silver before applying multiple thin layers of the blue.

It can be replicated without an airbrush, but you'll always get a superior result when airbrushing.

Thanks for the replies guys. I understand how to paint the metallic schemes, I was more or less looking for the appropriate blue to use to get that Thousand Sons blue, but only in metallic. I've tried a couple of different clear/transparent blues over the past couple of weeks with mixed results. Obviously, the darker the underlying color, the darker the overall blue, but the most common clear paint in my area (tamiya) seems way too dark to me. My most recent experiment was with createx candy2o Caribe blue. This turned out close and with probably two to three layers it would be spot on. Keep the ideas and suggestions coming!!!

I SEENT IT

Typically the metallic blue looks more appealing if the gold that accompanies it is a little darker and not super bright and flashy. Otherwise, that would be too much bling so consider that. but then again my opinion is one of many!

Agreed. My thoughts for the gold would be vallejo liquid gold red gold washed with reikland fleshshade with a highlight of the red gold again.

Mine are in metallic blue. I used Ammo by Mig warhead metallic blue.

It offered the best hue for my taste and there is a lot of variation on metallic blue out there once you look. Migs is very robust and vibrant which is what I wanted.

I could have mixed my own but for consistency over several units and months of painting I went with Mig.

It is designed for airbrush but can be hand brushed with 2 to 3 coats. If you use Duncan's method, spraying gold first, you will likely need 3 coats or the blue will have a bit of a green hue which is cool but not what i wanted.

I am very happy with my 15 SOTs and they certainly got a lot of attention from my buddies when they saw them.

The Migs Mettalic Blue also responds really well to nuln oil gloss.

Although tonight I plan on airbrushing rubrics in a white scheme.

Good luck!

Do you have any pics using the mig blue? Are mig paints enamel based? Thanks for the reply.

I have lots of pics though cannot figure out how to post. It is simple on Dakka but not sure what i am missing.

If you want pm me your email I can send later.

They r acrylic. Mig Jiminez seems to have produced paints washes etc for other companies and now under their own label. They r very passionate and super extensive with a lot of niche products. Great customer service also.

Prime black. Spray silver (Vallejo game air silver). Spray blue (candy blue airbrush paint) spray green (Tamiya clear green). Skip the green if you just want blue. If you don't have an airbrush you could get creative with silver and blue spray paint.

If you're using an airbrush you want to thin the tamiya a little bit and apply in very thin coats. It'll help if you highlight the gold with silver before adding any clear blue paint.
