I am more than a little amused if you think I painted him by hand. I'm not that good. :)

He's mostly airbrush work (I do all my base coats that way).

One other thing I really need to tighten up is my recess work. I can see a little too much sloppiness on him.

hmm, honestly the subtlety of the gradient was lost on me, looking again I see it though. So yeah definitely push a bit more contrast. But I do like the result, the weathering in particular is very nice.

Recess work could be a bit sharper I agree, what are you using to do it? paint or a wash in the recesses?

Army Painter washes, a mixture of Strong Tone and Dark Tone, 2 drops:3 drops.  I think I just need to use my "Expand-o-vision" goggles so that I can see better while I'm applying the wash vs. thinking that I did Ok, only to discover the contrary.

Sand yellow is my favorite highlight mix color. any equivalent pale yellow works as well. normal lemon yellow only works if you want to brighten things up a bit, so the sand yellow color keeps it from getting to garish.

VMC Iraqi Sand is what i like to mix into my colors.

Don't let Honda fool you, he is quite the accomplished brush painter. Only we both get bored painting a squad by hand when an airbrush can do it in less than half the time. Economy of time is real.

An Excerpt from an upcoming story...

+++

As the small group moved down a dimly lit corridor, they came upon a section where the left side was made of a clear, thick glass, approximately ten meters high. The glass wall revealed a heavily forested area with tall trees, vines low rolling hummocks, and an occasional stream.

Puzzled, Magos Dexlan asked, "This is quite an extensive terrarium you have. I'm not sure I've seen one this large supporting an installation of your size. It would seem that amount of space could be dedicated towards more useful endeavors."

"Actually, this is a side pursuit, outside of my primary interest. I found the most interesting species of Gastropoda while on a recent foraging expedition. Initially, I thought I had found two varieties, but it turns out that in fact, they are one and the same. Very odd. If I ever end up publishing my findings, I think I'll name them Astraconus Hermes, after myself of course. After all, why not grab a little bit of immortality when you can, eh?"

"Where was I? Oh yes, what I find most interesting about them is how one species could have evolved two completely different forms with related, yet different functions. The minor form seeks out prey and brings it back to the larger, slower major form to be digested."

Magos Dexlan interrupted, "Although it is possible that you find this discussion intellectually stimulating, I am not able to extract any usable content from our exchange."

Non-plused, Dr. Hermes continued, "Of course you haven't, I haven't related the most important parts yet. Have patience my good man. What is most interesting is how the minor form conveys the prey back to the major form. Upon securing itself to the prey's back, which I might add, it can do quite rapidly, it then punctures the prey's brainstem with an armored proboscis and in some manner I have yet to discover, takes over the involuntary musculature of the prey. Then it transports the prey back to the major form. Now the question you are probably asking yourself right now is, "How does it know where the major form is?" The answer of course, is "It doesn't! The major form continues to move as well as it has quite a ravenous appetite and must keep searching for sustenance."

Merely pausing in his lecture, Dr. Hermes continued, "Be that as it may, at first I suspected that there was some sort of pheromone-based tracking mechanism at work, but I have eliminated that as an option. Which leads me to suspect some sort psychic interaction between the two forms. This would in fact, be extraordinary."

"Lastly, there appears to be some evidence that the prey remains conscious and cognizant throughout the digestion process. Again, very odd and I've no real explanation for that either."

"In any case, shall we move on Magos?"

Magos Dexlan snipped, "Let us move on, we have wasted enough time expounding upon useless biological trivia."

D. Hermes merely nodded, "Yes, yes of course."

Suddenly there was a shrieking cry from the terrarium that stopped as quickly as it started. The Magos and his bodyguard looked back at the terrarium while exchanging com set clicks.

Dexlan immediately turned to Dr. Hermes and commanded, "What sort of animal makes that sound? The audio profile could clearly be within human vocal ranges."

Dr. Hermes looked up absently, "Oh, I have no idea what that could be. Obviously, animals are a little difficult to acquire so there's no telling what it is. Shall we keep moving?"

Note: I had actually finished a second figure, but discovered in the close ups that I had jacked up the eyes. I've getting through a severe respiratory infection and it seems that one of the side effects of the antibiotics is to leave me nearly blind in regards to details. I was using my mag glasses, but that doesn't seem to have done it's usual job. So, I see flaws in this fig as well.

Sigh...I'll have to retouch them up later.

In Search of Knowledge -

Magos Dexlan stared out at the enormity of the universe.

His chronograph continued to count down his remaining power availability...28.047%...28.046%...28.045%...

It wouldn't be much longer now.

+++

As soon as the long range mass spectrometer arrays identified the anomaly, the Explorator fleet immediately went to battle stations.

As the fleet closed, auspex scanners showed a small moon sized planetary body, devoid of any other threat indicators outside of  the  mass anomalies. Of curious note, a barely measurable CO2 leak manifesting as a white fumarole on one end could be seen from several kilometers out. Intrigued by the presence of CO2, a boarding party was tasked to investigate.

Given the belief that the boarding parties were approaching a dead rock, they were surprised when at the 1 kilometer remaining phase line, the outlines of a docking station embedded deep into the massive rock slowly pulsed in a pale blue light as if preparing for an expected welcome.

The docking area was empty.

Magos Dexlan, escorted by five of his personal Skitarii guard, exited their shuttle and entered the docking area along with ten other Skitarii teams. Once the perimeter was secured, the threat level was reduced, but forces remained at a high state of alert.

Mapping servitors were launched to begin the cartographic analysis of the interior.

The station appeared to be abandoned.

+++

Magos Dexlan turned down yet another long corridor, when much to his surprise, the door at the end opened.

Framed by a soft light from the doorway, stood a tall, frail looking figure with a mane of jet black hair.

Almost whispering, the figured hissed, "Welcome distant travelers! I am Biologis Prime Hermes, the custodian of this marvelous installation. You may call me Dr. Hermes. With whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?"

+++

As the small group moved down a dimly lit corridor, they came upon a section where the left side was made of a clear, thick glass, approximately ten meters high. The glass wall revealed an area, heavily forested with tall trees, vines, low, rolling hummocks, and an occasional stream.

Puzzled, Magos Dexlan said, "This is quite an extensive...terrarium you have. I'm not sure I've seen one this large supported by an installation of your size. It would seem that amount of space could be dedicated towards other endeavors."

"Actually, this area is for a research project, outside of my primary interest. I found the most interesting species of Gastropoda while on a recent foraging expedition. The Magos and his bodyguard offered no responses.

Pausing briefly, Dr. Hermes then continued, "Of course you haven't, I haven't related the most important parts yet. Have patience my good man. What is most interesting is how the minor form conveys the prey back to the major form. Upon securing itself to the prey's back, which I might add, it can do quite rapidly, it then punctures the prey's brainstem with an armored proboscis and in some manner I have yet to discover, takes over the involuntary muscle systems of the prey. Now the question you are probably asking yourself right now is, "How does it know where the major form is?" The answer of course is, "It doesn't!" The major form continues to move as well as it has quite a ravenous appetite and must keep searching for sustenance."

Dr. Hermes looked  back again expecting a response, but none was forthcoming.

Continuing, "At first I suspected that there was some sort of pheromone-based tracking mechanism at work, but I have eliminated that as an option. Which leads me to suspect some sort of psychic interaction between the two forms. Obviously, this capability would be quite extraordinary."

"Lastly, there appears to be some evidence that the prey remains conscious and cognizant throughout the digestion process. Again, very odd and I've no real explanation for that either."

Pausing again for a response, which was not offered, Hermes turned around and said, "In any case, shall we move on Magos?"

Magos Dexlan sniped, "Yes, let us move on, we have wasted enough time expounding upon useless biological trivia."

D. Hermes merely nodded.

Suddenly there was a shrieking cry from the terrarium that stopped as quickly as it started. The Magos and his bodyguards looked back at the terrarium while exchanging vox com clicks.

Dexlan turned to Dr. Hermes and snapped, "What sort of animal makes that sound? The audio profile indicates human vocal ranges."

Dr. Hermes looked up absently and said, "Oh, I have no idea what it could be. Human you say?"

+++

After touring the fifth laboratory complex in succession, Magos Dexlan blurted out, "What exactly do you do here doctor?"

More than a little irritated, Dr. Hermes replied, "Well if you had been listening, you would have heard me say that this machinery you have been shown, is some of the most advanced of its type in this segment of the galaxy..

"YES! I heard you say that innumerable times," the Magos interrupted, "But what  do you do with all this equipment? What exactly takes place here?"

Dr. Hermes clearly annoyed, faced the  Magos and said, "Genetic research. I conduct experiments into the mapping, re-engineering, and re-calibration of human DNA for the purposes of increasing performance of the human engine."

"Something your machine cult has never truly understood Magos, is that the most powerful machines are in fact made of flesh and blood. More importantly, they are made "by" flesh and blood.  In the end, I fear this will be the Mechanicum's undoing."

There was a long pause in conversation as neither Magos Dexlan nor Dr. Hermes made the effort to resume the discussion.

Finally the Magos interjected, "I have endured enough of your tiring and blasphemous spewings. I am placing you under arrest and you will accompany me under guard back to my ship to stand trial by a tribunal of the Ommnissiah." By silent command, the Magos guard lowered their weapons and took aim at the doctor, five red dots tightly grouped on his chest.

Dr. Hermes, appeared to be amused and responded, "Do I need to point out, my good Magos, that you have absolutely no authority here?"

'My presence here grants me all the authority that I need. It is not lost on me that this abomination you call an experimental station appears to be serviced by yourself and a cadre of servitors, all of which have been catalogued and targeted for decommissioning by my command. I should also point out that poised above your "station" is an Explorator fleet ready to initiate a catastrophic bombardment upon this planetoid also upon my direct command."

Dr. Hermes smiled. "How lacking in perceptive of you, my good Magos. Unfortunately, organic "Life" is not always as...obvious in its behaviors. Initial appearances can be quite deceiving. For example, a frail organism might use its frailties as a trap, not revealing its true strengths until the trap is sprung."

The Doctor and the Magos  stared at each other in silence.

"Ah, I can see by your countenance, that you think I am bluffing. Please feel free to try and contact your other boarding parties, or for that matter, any of your ships."

Both the Magos and the Skitarii-Prime silently voxed the onsite teams, as well as the orbiting fleet. No  responses returned.

"By now, you will have discovered that your, hmm, what do you call it, your noospheric connections have all been disabled. In fact, while you were being entertained by me, your fleet was infiltrated and your ships are no longer under your command."

"That is patently impossible", the Magos blurted. "One cannot merely board a Mechcanicum vessel so easily. It is not a human-led ship, it has Machine interfaces and protocols  requiring levels of interaction that border on the infinitely complex. That would require a level of sophistication unavailable to you, something that only-"

"-Mechanicum trained adepts would be capable of? Yes, I imagine my benefactors would have taken that into consideration.", replied the doctor.

Staggered by the implication of Dr. Hermes statement, the Magos fell silent.

"Your" fleet is now "our" fleet, he concluded.

Anticipating the next logical command response before it was issued, the Dr. Hermes looked at the Skitarii Prime and softly said, "bang!", causing all five bodyguard figures to drop to the ground, each with a circular hole in their chests, reminiscent of the effects of a small shaped charge.

Smiling, Dr. Hermes continued, "I must say that when we first observed "your" fleet approaching, I was quite excited at the potential to increase the size of our gene pool. Imagine my disappointment to discover that there's so very little..."meat" in your passengers and crew except in your bond servants. Thankfully, this exercise isn't a complete loss."

"Your soldiers and other guardian machines are obviously problematical, so they have been dealt with in a similar fashion to your bodyguard. The remaining servitors shall receive new orders from the new owners of your fleet. I must profess a profound ignorance in these Mechanicum matters. I am after all, only a man of flesh and blood. However, the bond servants will be shuttled  down in short order."

Stunned at the outcome of events, the Magos asked weakly, "And what of me?"

Well, you don't have to worry about participating in any research sadly, there's not enough meat in you to make it worth my while. Instead...I think I shall provide you with an opportunity to contemplate your place in the "grand scheme of things."

+++

His punishment was rather simple.

A trio of unmarked Astartes giants first disabled all his suit operation protocols, then violently removed his arms and legs. All communication links and data stores were ripped from their  settings.

There wasn't even a long monologue to endure. They carried him to the airlock where he was brutally ejected into space. Like trash.

Floating out in the great void, Dexlan  looked out into  the expanse.

His god was nowhere to be seen.

So this is a BaC Contemptor in a Moritat configuration. He's set up with two Multi-meltas, but if I need to he can wield "counts as" twin lascannons. I wanted him to stand out a little bit once the painting began, so I gs'd some serpents on his chest, which I think will be lightly drybrushed a gun metal color over indigo.

Ok, I'm fairly comfortable with Orpheus. I'll set him sit for a day and see if he still looks finished. I also have a couple of troopers just about finished that I should be able to get out before too much longer.

As I continue to read (and re-read) AL books, one of the things that drives how this army comes together is the story. My goal is to have a force that features multiple attacking vectors, all focused on a specific target, coming from multiple directions, with varied capabilities.

It would be nice if Intercessors could deep strike like in "Legion" and "Praetorian of Dorn", but I don't see that happening. So that means other units providing that capability, while other forces seek to disrupt. I went with the Multi-melta Moritat because the AL seem to use melta weapons a lot in the stories, so to the extent that I can make that happen I will. As it stands, a lot of the mobile firepower will come from Helblasters, yet I felt that I needed at least one unit with a powerful punch for things like bunkers and other hard targets.

Now having said all that, I don't know that I am a clever enough player to pull all that together and make it work, but I am certainly very interested in seeing if I can.

Also, since I write a lot of the stories for our campaign arcs, who's to say who really won a game.

So here's Orpheus/Alpheus/Alpharius/George continuing the "Moonlight" camo scheme. I got some I got some indigo's and purples today, so I plan on experimenting with those colors on the next squad, which is still a couple of troopers away.

But I'll get there.

I really like the shading & weathering that you have managed to achieve on George, plus the serpent is a nice touch too

The stories are really well constructed and all the characters so far ooze flavour, however my favourite is Errold Grige. Holy cow, that face. I visibly flinched at those empty eye sockets, so creepy and realistic fella. Turned my tummy.

Really liking where this is heading.

Here's the two newest members of my first Headhunter cadre.

The grenade with the yellow stripe represents nerve gas, because <bad guys>.

<looks around at another 20 or so Intercessors> Whose idea was it to paint these guys like this?

Don't worry, it's worth it. :)

Ok...I finished the first Headhunter Cadre and overall it doesn't look too bad. I like the overall effect of the "Moonlight" camo and the color palette with this group.

So these are all the "guys" painted so far, not including operatives.

gallery_15184_10600_502901.jpg

Here's a family shot, though the next time I make a hobby run, I'll see if I can get some Hollywood shots with them posed in decent terrain.

gallery_15184_10600_245649.jpg

Next up will be the second Headhunter Cadre and a Lieutenant. The next squad is going to be painted in what I will call "Nightshade" camo. This scheme will start off with an Indigo base and then I'll see where that leads. Anyway, this scheme should be a little closer to the original AL scheme that some people do for Heresy era, but without the metallic shine. I want to keep the overall interplay of colors for this army rather subdued.

Also, I am going to look into bigger steps between colors per Blindhamster's suggestion and see how that looks.

Love the idea of the lightning claws, although they're too wide for the hands.  Maybe remove one of the blades?

<Bah, wrong button pushed>

I hear you. I didn't want to take off one and have three claws because that was too Wolverine for me, so I considered splitting them in half and going with two.

Long story short, I'm still looking at them.

Thank you for the feedback , I do appreciate it.

Sooo...Nightshade.

I'll be honest, what you are about to see is nothing like how I envisioned the scheme, but it has grown on me mostly because it is different.

The lighter color is called Light Green Blue (LGB), but when it dries it ends up looking more blue. Which there's nothing wrong with that, but I was expecting to see a little more green.

Also, as you are about to see, the darker color is a purple, which I like. But when I first started out, I went with an indigo color and with the LGB on top, looked quite...different and not in a way that I wanted to continue with. So I whipped up some purple and here we are.

So now I have <holds arms out> this many guys...

gallery_15184_10600_550049.jpg

...which I think will look Ok when they are all at the same stage.

Curious how this was going to turn out, I've taken one guy and advanced his shading and weathering.

Should be pretty entertaining.

Next up will be a chance for the AL to pull some shenanigans in a real game. Batrep to follow.

After that, I am going to experiment with what I'll call Advanced Recon using Reivers. Not exactly sure what that mean just yet, but I'm interested in exploring the idea.

The Scouring of Zircon - Background

Mo and I got together to play out a story point for our campaign. To get everyone up to speed with what is going on here are two links.

Part I

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253019-the-albigensian-crusade-2nd-8th-game-080717/?p=4801583

Part II

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/338008-the-unwinding-coil-nightshade2-112217/?p=4860877

Given that forces unknown to the Ordo Chronos (OC) had acquired the Time Dilation Projector (known as TRD.Z), they began an extremely intense hunt using technologies only whispered within the binary dreams of rogue Adeptus Mechanicus factions on Mars.

Having discovered the location of the TRD.Z, a major raid was organized on short notice to sweep in and collect the device and any information related to its operation. The Ordo Chronos forces were also expected to retrieve a high level Chrononaut that had been captured along with the TRD.Z during the Tau incursion of <XXXXXXX>, only to discover that he was not present.

The search for the Chrononaut continues.

So, from a scenario perspective, our game was intended to portray the violent and brutal assault of Space Marine forces in the livery of the November Warriors upon a secret research station manned by human resources. It was lightly protected by Elysian type Guard forces, overseen by a small cadre of Alpha Legion.

November Warriors (CP = 4)

gallery_15184_10600_447020.jpg

Summary: I told Mo that mobility would be very important to his force. He translated that briefing point to mean, lots of "mean" flyers and a few squads of jump pack troops. He used Iron Hand CTs.

Alpha Legion (CP = 3)

gallery_15184_10600_991314.jpg

Keeping to the flavor of the game and what I have available to me, I took enough AL units to make up a patrol, then a Battalion for the Elysians, and finally a Vindicare assassin (which cost me a CP). To keep me somewhat in the game, I took two Vultures with Punisher cannons (white tails) and a Vendetta. From an AL perspective, the one indulgence I could take was the Contemptor bearing two twin lascannon arms. I was using Raven Guard CTs for my Alpha Legion patrol.

If I could knock off a character with the Vindicare, so much the better.

It wasn't a lot, but from a story perspective, it felt right.

The Battleground

gallery_15184_10600_485209.jpg

We deployed using the arrowhead set up with the AL deployed at the bottom and the OC forces arriving on the corners. Mo got to go first and I was unable to steal the initiative.

The table had six chonogramatic focus points. Because the TRD.Z is a very finicky piece of machinery and is constantly fluctuating between various levels of time sediments, we opted to roll for the location of the TRD.Z each turn with a D6., thus each set of forces could never really be sure of where the exact location of the TRD.Z would be for more than one turn.

Whomever possessed the TRD.Z at the end of the game would win.

We also decided to represent how an actual raid might be conducted, i.e. with overwhelming force, both forces started off the game with a Power Level (PL) of 150, while the Ordo Chronos forces received an additional 50 PL on Turn 3.

The Alpha Legion forces were further limited by what I had already painted, which more accurately portrayed a small cadre overseeing efforts by human operatives.

Turn 1

Mo got to go first and I was unable to steal the initiative.

gallery_15184_10600_401080.jpg

gallery_15184_10600_261054.jpg

His first turn was pretty brutal. The Xiphon's ripped one of the Vultures out of the sky (1st Blood) and severely damaged the other. Thankfully, the Vendetta got away with no damage. He also put several wounds on the Contemptor with his Sicaran, but left me in the top bracket (I just realized that I didn't use my RG chapter tactics on this). The Fire Raptor also tore up the scenery and one Intercessor squad. The squadron of Tempests flew up and added to the shower of lead peppering my flyers.

However, enough of what I had survived so that I was looking forward to my turn.

After moving a little, the command squads and two platoons dropped out of their Valkyries to begin threatening some of Mo's infantry.

Shooting was horrendous. Like horrendously bad.

The Contemptor whiffed on all of its shots. What shooting I was able to pour into the Fire Raptor only resulted in two wounds. It laughed heartily.

The Vindicare did a marvelous job of hitting. Wounding, not so much.

My one saving grace was the Vendetta and what was left of one Vulture combining to shoot off all but one wound on the Storm Eagle. Actually, what had happened is that the Vendetta and the chin mounted heavy bolter turret took the Storm Eagle down to one wound.

Then I had a decision.

Do I expend a Heavy 40 blast from the Punisher cannons to get one freaking wound or do I direct them somewhere else (e.g. other Xiphon). Even though the Storm Eagle only had one wound left, it still packs a significant amount of firepower and I didn't want to gamble with it damaging any more of my painfully frail units.

So I fired the Punisher cannons and got nothing. Not a single thing.

Mo and I laughed, but Mo laughed more.

Down on the ground, an Elysian squad watched the aerial show and just said, "Losers".

The plasma gunner pointed his mighty weapon up into the sky and said, "I got this".

He didn't.

The rest of the squad pushed him aside and said, "This is how you do it."

And two of them hit.

And those two hits turned into wounds.

And Mo rolled Snake eyes.

And the Storm Eagle, blessed by the Emperor 10,000 years ago, veteran of many campaigns, a Herald for the Fury of the November Warriors, was brought down by a couple of laser pointers.

That made me smile. The fact that the Techmarine inside didn't take a wound did not.

Two drop troops squads, plinked off some jump pack troops, but made a bigger impression with the explosions experienced by the plasma gunners. Mostly, the November Warriors were having a hard time standing up because they were laughing so hard.

"Hey Plasma boy, shoot at me!"

Turn 2

Well, the November Warriors weren't so amused at the loss of their Storm Eagle after all. They swept in on a tsunami of vengeance and brushed aside almost everything I had.

I lost my Company Command early on (Slay the Warlord), as well as the Platoon command. Mo's counter punching jump pack squads knocked off the opposing Elysian squads.

Miraculously, the Vendetta only took a few wounds, leaving it at full effectiveness, but the other Vulture dropped out of the sky rather forcefully, leaving the odds a little more interesting. Mo's 10 remaining flyers to my one.

The Sicarian took out the Contemptor and a combination of the Fire Raptor and the Tempests scoured the surrounding buildings and reduced both Intercessor squads to one trooper.

And then it was my turn.

Mostly, I had the Vendetta, two Tauros jeeps, and a Hellblaster squad.

Not a lot to work with, so I made the best of what I could do with what I had.

The Vendetta ripped up one of the Xiphons. The jeeps did squat, and the Hellblaster squad busted itself up (three ones...crap, I didn't re-roll those because of the LT), but took out a Tempest.

The Vindicare escaped the clutches of the jump pack squad, but failed again to hit the guy standing right in front of him with his pistol.

Sigh...

Looking at what was left, we called it a victory for the November Warriors at the beginning of Turn 3.

Well played Mo!

Cheers,
